Much of that PS3/360 "support" is Western though,

If you're looking at titles crossing 100K, Western vs. Japanese developed doesn't mean as much, since 100K isn't just incredibly hard with publisher "push." Don't keep track of developers, but here's the Western publisher (Bethesda, EA, Microsoft, Take-Two, Ubisoft, Warner Bros.) vs. everyone else breakdown of the above numbers.

New Releases in MC Top 50 in 2011 - Western pubs
PS3 - 14
360 - 10

New Releases in MC Top 50 in 2011 - Other pubs
PS3 - 66

WII - 21

New Releases in MC Top 50 since beginning of 2010 - Western pubs

Thanks, I wouldn't expect you to have any country development distinction in your data so a country publisher distinction is reasonable. There are still quite a few Western titles published by Japanese publishers though, and my point was more that the platform choice for these titles is made regardless of the situation in Japan, so I wouldn't include these in the "backing the wrong horse" category.

The number of Wii titles released in Japan is a drop in the Ocean compared to 360 overall though. I'm not so sure there isn't proportional validity at play, especially with PS3.

I'm not sure why you would even argue that the proportion of western developed titles is anywhere near proportional between PS3/360 and Wii, but using the data above which is restricted to publishers;

Proportion of New Releases in MC Top 50 in 2011 - Western pubs;

360: 10/45 = 22%
PS3: 14/80 = 18%
Wii: 0/21 = 0%

Proportion of New Releases in MC Top 50 since beginning of 2010 - Western pubs;

360: 29/104 = 28%
PS3: 34/181 = 19%
Wii: 0/57 = 0%

Oh, it wasn't clear, but in my mind, my statement referred to worldwide third-party publishers backing the wrong horse. As succinctly summarized by Opiate last thread, third-parties all backing a single horse is best for the third-parties, and as a fallout of that, backing the single horse with the largest userbase would then typically be the best single horse to back. What should've been a "well, duh" decision was greatly complicated by Nintendo's system being an oddball on old hardware without having an easy track to port to, third-parties having invested millions (billions?) in infrastructure to support new hardware and believing the FUD early in the generation/GameCube stigma to avoid Wii, and then Nintendo not giving the publishers enough reason to overcome the FUD/GameCube stigma/sunk investment costs to bring the games to Wii, anyways.

The result is one of the most screwed up generations we've ever seen in the home console space. :/

First day sales reports from retailers.

Good opening for Ace Combat (70-80k estimate from get6-2), average for Just Dance (20-30k estimate from get6-2). Nothing really spectatular in general, retailers are prepared for Vita promotion and preorders.

Famitsu stopped tracking DS Lite and PSP go

Strange seeing how a good start for a game is average for another one :p
But yes, Ace Combat seems to have done a very good first day.
Just Dance already at 70-80k? And it could have a very good increase in weekend, since it is a casual game.

EDIT: Ah, lol, now I see :p

yes, fuck 3rd parties for not releasing their games on Wii. I am of the presumably few 'gamers' who has only Wii, but I would buy a lot of the games released on other consoles with a much lower graphics if they were released on Wii; I do buy CoDs on Wii. And I think it is crap shit that Wii couldn't support the games, at least most of them would be pretty possible on Wii.

Though, to be honest, there are only like 5 games on HD consoles that I really wanted to have (Darks Souls being on top by a very wide margin!)

Fair enough, although for the reasons you stated I personally don't think Wii was ever a viable horse for Western publishers to back ahead of PS360, which they have basically treated as a single platform.

The situation was different in Japan though, where the power difference has been less of an issue (Wii to PS3, and even PSP to PS3 up-ports seem to do fine), online is less popular, and both 360 and PS3 were almost irrelevant early in the gen whilst Wii was setting records. When MH3 moved to Wii was the time for other Japanese publishers to "back the right horse", but for whatever reason Nintendo failed to get them to do this.

The only 3rd party title that I can think of at the moment which would really be un-portable without heavily screwing up its main draw/gameplay/features is Dead Rising.
Guess what...

I think it had also to do with the DS complete global domination, and the starting of some PSP important project. Wii started having some heavy announcements with MH3, and then DQX back in 2008, but in the meanwhile all the big games came on on DS, PSP, and something in development before launch for PS3. The portable domination has stopped Wii from being supported properly when it needed it, after the first year... and then, in 2009 we saw the first signs of the decline.
IMHO.

I'll admit, I didn't really think it through and consider we were only reflecting on the MC top 50s. On the other hand I wasn't speaking on western publishers alone, and sales arguments about western developers making up any sort of major proportion on the HD systems compared to Wii does feel a little remiss when Nintendo own selfpublished western titles (DKCR, Goldeneye, Epic Mickey) have possibly outsold all those games combined on each system.

My point really was that cutting western devs from the equation still also impacts Wii on some level, even if I'm wrong on a proportion in numbers. And honestly looking at donny's figures, I don't think it impacts PS3 & 360 quite as much as you'd implied either.

Nintendo games + (probably) incentivized game + always goes to top console game

What can we learn from this? The same thing we've been discussing for years. Third-parties backed the wrong horse and Nintendo didn't give enough of them a reason to change their minds (via hardware power and/or "incentives"). Here's hoping that Wii U won't be in the same boat. It should have the hardware power for porting part taken care of, at least.

Yes, it's amazing what actually having releases for your console will do.

New Releases in MC Top 50 (i.e. really low bar) in 2011
PS3 - 80
360 - 45
WII - 21

New Releases in MC Top 50 (i.e. really low bar) since beginning of 2010
PS3 - 181
360 - 104
WII - 57

Can we have new releases in MS Top 10 instead of Top 50... i think you can get into Top 50 with just 3k...
So i think top 50 gives all new releases.. so top 10 is still low.. like 10 - 20k.. but still this means some sales atleast..

The comment was more about Wii lacking general support compared to PS3 but sure.

New Releases debuting in MC Top 10 in 2011
PS3 - 43
WII - 11
360 - 10

New Releases debuting in MC Top 10 since beginning of 2010
PS3 - 95
WII - 25
360 - 24

Edit:
Did some further poking, and it looks like if you're going to get > 100K, you pretty much have to be in the Top 10. Since the beginning of 2010, only two games have made it > 100K while debuting outside the Top 10 (Famitsu). WII Taiko Drum Master 3 and 360 Kinect Adventures. No PS3 games have debuted outside the Top 10 since 2010 and had a last reported total > 100K in my Famitsu database.

Edit2:
Extending that to 2009 only adds two games, as well. WII Kamen Rider and PS3 MGS4 (BEST).

Thanks..
thats really interesting observation... specially seeing Wii & 360 so close...

The Just Dance figure should be interesting to watch and see how much it grows over the weekend.
If Nintendo promotes the hidden track well, it should sell at least 50k more

Just Mario is really awesome
:lol

So this is the biggest launch of PES on PS3.
Btw LT of PES has increased since every year from 2007... so Soccer getting popular again or PS3 is just taking PS2 sales.?
Can you give FW & LT figures of PS2 + PS3 sales for PES from 2007?

The game has become a total shit and Japan refuses to surrender to the new Fifa overlord XP

I notice amazon only have the 3g version up at the moment, I wonder if Sony could be really dumb and give the cheap version the 20 gig ps3 treatment
I believe they learned their lessons with PSP and PS3 already, this won't happen.

It is too soon anyway to tell anything based on these, Uncharted is above Golf now. In a week or so we may have some initial impression.

It's strange.
Now, first is the 32 GB card... but it isn't properly what I find strange, since Vita itself is soldout.
What I find strange is that right now the most desiderd game is... Uncharted.
And then HSG6.
...Uncharted...WHAT.

P.S. Another strange thing that can explain Uncharted preminant position is that Dynasty Warriors Next isn't available for preorder yet.

Unfortunately they also keep ignoring the way superior Playmaker Wii version which is a real shame. =(

Things are much more fractured now. Wii/X360 versions are small parts of the whole, but GCN/Xbox were almost nonexistent. PSP also accounts for a couple hundred thousand, while it doesn't seem to have been on GBA. Just looking at last year's game, by the end of the year PSP+Wii+X360 come to 290,837.

EDIT: This line combines all the Winning Elevens from all systems, including the in-between editions. Some slowdown, but not bad.

PSP version usually sales 200k+ too.
Even adding all platforms, the decline is still considerable:

World Soccer Winning Eleven 9: 1.320.000
World Soccer Winning Eleven 10: 1.384.000
World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008: 1.418.000
World Soccer Winning Eleven 2009: 976.000
World Soccer Winning Eleven 2010: 837.000
World Soccer Winning Eleven 2011: 852.000

And 2011 is only up because I added the 3DS version (100k). =P

Sony gave retailers the number of first shipments they will have but they are completely in black for the final shipment of Vita. It looks Sony will push the 3G model harder (shipments 2 to 1 comparing to to the simple according to get6-2). The number that is reproduced is the one of the first 500K 3G models that will have pre-paid 100 hours.
