So are we more or less expecting Japan to be Switchland for the remainder of the generation?
Well yeah similar to the 3DS in the previous. That's why we were so worried about the switches actual success in the region because the domestic market is deader than dodo without a strong nintnedo handheld these days.

It's simply a cold unrelenting fact.

I love how everyone kept saying how ingenious it was to put these games on 3DS' "giant userbase (right)" instead of the Switch.
Saw this one coming a mile away, seems like Metroid isn't setting the charts on fire either (globally).
It's not ingenious. It's just business. 3DS is profitable and they can't make enlightened switches. Might as well sell some 3ds games and hardware.

The last batch of 3ds games have been remakes or updates. Nothing with long development cycled and high costs.

Would metroid and Pokemon be more exciting on Switch? Sure, but also more expensive and Switch is already sold out.

Gotta spread it out.

I hope starting with Odyssey release Nintendo will be able to ship a respectable number of Switch.

Something like:
Odyssey's week 120k
November 100k/week
December 200k/week

Alongside PS4. There's enough (exclusive) games coming to both, and the hardware sales they're currently generating are good.
There is going to be a point where the sales lines cross over and the Switch starts to pull ahead. I wonder what happens then and if companies will react to that or prepare for when that happens. I don't see the PS4 selling enough to stop that from happening in Japan.

That's putting it lightly. Switch will almost certainly pass PS4 before the end of 2018. After that, it will likely sell 2-3 times LTD of PS4.

This is common sense, I mean even in the worst case scenarios this was likely to happen and i'm pretty sure Japanese companies/analysts, anyone paying attention to medium expected as such. PS4 was always going to sell between 5-10 million. You didn't need a crystal ball for that. Nintendo's next handheld/hybrid cratering to such a degree to be below that level was an absolute worst case scenario for the company.

I don’t think many were calling for Nintendo to cancel 3DS software outright, but I don’t see a simultaneous release being too much to ask for.
Samus Returns would’ve probably done super well on a slower release month on Switch.
They even did it with FEW on New 3DS

Immortal games...
Tbh Splatoon 2 & MK8 don't surprise me for having legs, it's Zelda that has really impressed. I can't remember a single story campaign game (full 3d) showing steady sales on a weekly basis in a long time. Well done BOTW!

If it keeps selling like that for a year, it will reach a million (Wii U sales included).

5-10m is a pretty huge gap.

With japanese companies looking to expand their sales in Asia and west where the Playstation brand is stronger i doubt we will see any big changes.

That's not great for an MH title, is it? Genuinely curious.
I understand it's a port of a spinoff, though. What did MHXX 3DS end up at?
It’s a late port of an expansion to a spin-off with no added content to the original 3DS release which Capcom said they weren’t localizing.

I think Capcom was expecting 300k for their Switch titles so I’m not sure how good that number is.

To be fair, BotW is a once in a generation game, so that was at least expected. It still won't touch a Dragonquest or Pokemon in terms of sales though.

It's a 5 mill gap most successful consoles/handhelds sell in the 20+ range. Who said anything about that, that's obvious, we're talking about domestic sales here.

It seems to be selling stedily, i can see it approaching 300k when its all said and done

Are you suggesting that PS4 and Switch sales are going to end their lives in similar places?

5m would be closer to a single year's sales for Switch.
Where in the world did you got that from what i said?

I just don't think there is any chance to see PS4 ending it's life next year in Japan.

Nintendo has left 3DS at auto pilot since long time ago, I doubt they have high expectations for games with so low investment from them.
Yeah 3DS is actually doing better than I expected this year due to DQXI, MHXX and new 2DS revision. Still it will definitely get over 1.5 million by the end of the year, so the decline will be far less pronounced than I expected at the start of the year. It will be down YoY no doubt but not going to be a huge decline like I expected. With Pokemon still to release it's likely going to end up north of 1.6 million for the year. Next year thought I'd be absolutely amazed if 3DS managed to sell more than half that.
With the Switch doing as well as it has, I still expect it to clear 4 million sales this year.
Nintendo is no doubt going to be happy with around 5.6 million hw sold in Japan. It would be their best year since 2013 in terms of hardware sold. The Switch also has a lot going for it:

- Greater sw sales than 3DS launch year.
- No price cut required to keep up with 3DS launch aligned.
- More accessories than any device since the Wii(JoyCons, Grips, ProControllers, Amiibos, Carrying Cases etc)
- Huge online game like Splatoon 2 which will drive subs for their online service next year
- Far greater share of digital sales than any previous Nintendo Platform(this one isn't confirmed yet, but I think signs are pointing towards it)

Bad week in general, but anyone blaming the roster for FEW is crazy. The japanese market is just oversaturated with Musou games and this is a Fire Emblem spinoff focusing on a console with just a bit more than 1M users. It's not like adding Leif would set the charts on fire.

Bad business, since they *don't* seem to be (able to) selling games. 20k for Mario RPGs is next to nothing. Might as well not exist. Proper business would have been cross gen.

I think it has a slight chance to touch the ps4 version LTD sales
It will definitely have longer legs, that's for sure but the sales combined seem to be completely out of reach.

It's not like DQ would have sold less if it was only released on the 3DS, it would have likely sold the same amount or a bit less perhaps then.

I don't agree that a successful system in Japan is only when it sells 20m.

Also what i said about western/asia expand is relevant with the domestic sales, considering that they seem more than fine with these PS4 software/hardware sales. Otherwise we would have seen more multiplatform announcements. Of course i could be wrong, so let's wait and see.
