I'm all out of explanations on why 3DS sales keep going up even though software is clearly not there.

Can see Just Dance Wii selling as much as 500K this year.

3DS actually went up, color me surprised.

A bit of a disappointing start for Just Dance though, maybe it'll have nice legs.

Me too, there's something crazy in the water over there I guess. Is OoT that much of a draw card?

Looks like it's just the new 'DS' purchase, seeing as no one is buying DS anymore, this is the default Nintendo handheld now
Have Nintendo been marketing that DS games are playable on 3DS?

I don't know, maybe being the newest and cheapest console in the market with a great announced lineup is helping a bit.

I fear it's because Japanse fear they won't find units this Christmas...at least, I've read this as an explanation given by a retailer. Chris posted that, IIRC.
Yes, the power of MH :lol
And Zelda, really, is the Nintendogs of 3DS: look at those marvelous legs.

People buying 3DS now so they have money to get the Vita when it comes out in December :3

Nintendo definitely needs to make a Rhythm Heaven 3DS and release it on Vita day just for the lols

great sales for the 3DS. People just want to secure their copy once MK7 and MH3 come out

I assume it lesser reason to buy DS if there is 3DS on the market. So it might be quite of people want/replace DS might jump 3DS for latest tech/more library available

When are the big games coming for the 3DS? Because I'm seeing Japan preparing for them...

Probably securing themselves a 3DS for the mandatory MH3G shortage.

Also, quite the solid debut for AC7, isn't it?

At this point is seems clear Monster Hunter will launch in it's first week as the best selling game for the 3DS, 500k minimum, maybe as much as 800k.

I guess Nintendo has the mindset in terms of price. Lets hope Vita shows that you can sell with SW on top of killer HW.

It seems like PS3 is really starting to hit its stride in SW. More if a presence, not so fail like as their HW numbers have been.

I can barely imagine which is the real sales potencial of the 3Ds.
No relevant games and there is nothing comparable to Nintendogs (the first) or Brain Training... where is the silent hit that can let the market explode?

This makes no sense. Surely if, to use your own terms, "Nintendo has the mindset in terms of price", then, by virtue of the Vita not having such a low price, it will not be "killer HW" for good software sales to accompany?

Vita doesn't really have software for Japan as of yet though. Nintendo has the promise of software, while Vita doesn't at this point. The hardware is going to be Vita's main selling point, and it's pricey, which as we've seen isn't a point in its favor.

I think he means that despite many people buying the 3DS because it is cheap in price, he hopes that Vita can still succeed as well despite having a higher pricetag.

Why shouldn't they buy a 3DS, is the better question.

Some months ago, you wouldn't want to buy a 3DS, because:

1. It was expensive

2. It had no evidence of strong 3rd party support

3. Heavy hitters were months away

(a lot of people would buy the system anyway just for Nintendo games sooner or later, it was whether they wanted 3DS for Christmas or say, Vita)

4. You feared a revision will come too soonish

5. It didn't have the standard control options

The question is not about why wanting to buy a 3DS anymore, it is about why not wanting to buy one. Now is as good as buying in like another year until a revision hits.

Well, what should they buy now? Zelda! And they're buying it.
And there are all the other games in the rest of top50 which sell.
When software is released, it sells (Kagura is the last good example about it).

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Lol@3ds sales next weeks will be epic.

Mario 3d land will be the first system seller.

ON a week with no releases and such a small installed base only one game in the top 20 ain't too bad, I'm sure there'll be quite a few more when we get the top 50

What changed before and after the sales spike ?
Maybe software wasn't the problem ( probably because the announced Nintendo games is enough for now and the anticipation for MH 3G/4 is big ).

Did Nintendo ramp up advertaisment ?

Probably the high price was the the thing that keep low the sales with the combination of a cheaper alternative in the form of PSP.

Interest in future titles.

Nintendo systems also have been known to run into shortages, and it's not really getting cheaper, so buying it now is safer and doesn't have a major downside.

We saw this phenomenon at the PS3's launch when people standing in line were getting it for Gran Turismo 5 and Final Fantasy XIII, though with the 3DS we actually have lots of close release dates.

Let's not forget you can download wicked games from the e-shop. I've been playing Link's Awakening alongside Ocarina of Time. It's a great service. They know they can pick theirs up now to play some e-shop gear then grab Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart, and Monster Hunter in a month or two.

Well done, Nintendo.

Good 3DS sales with no software, it seems price was the more important factor in the short term at least.

Not really, because nothing new has been released for a while now. And the last "important" release was Senran Kagura (and it sold pretty damn well for its genre).

We'll see how Tetris does (I'm not expecting much), but starting november, software sales are going to be a lot better for the 3DS, and it's not going to stop until at least summer 2012, since it has a pretty killer line up for next year too.

There's zero reason to buy a DS with the 3DS being so cheap, and the game announcements point to it being the Japanese system of choice for the near future.
