Media Create Sales: Week 41, 2013 (Oct 07 - Oct 13)

Vita is set to have a good holiday season, I'm more curious about 2014, Sony is running out of cards because they were really aggressive this year.

They better have some big third-party games coming (FFX, GE2 like) and a healthy release schedule, otherwise momentum will go down again.

Wii U will likely never recover, it's a console in Japan with no third-party support. Nintendo should try and settle for 10k/week.

First party support next year will be way better than this one: Freedom Wars, Gravity Rush 2, Soul Sacrifice Delta, Over my dead body 2, No Heroes Allowed G is better than...Soul Sacrifice, lol. A new Gran Turismo and Minna no Golf will do wonders as well.

I believe that the usual suspects will stay supporting the vita: Bandai Namco, Tecmo Koei, Marvelous, Sega, Kadokawa Games, Idea Factory, Arc System Works and Falcom.

Square, GungHo, Capcom and Konami won't give a shit, unfortunately.

Both Vita TV and God Eater 2 come out on november 14th, its gonna be Vita's biggest week this year. I predict above 100K.

Nintendo is clearly aware of this, since they're launching this 3DS MH4 bundle the week before:

If they port XII to the PS3 they'll port it to the Vita. Though as I'm sure you know, a lot of us don't think HD remasters are a big deal anyhow.

Ports or not, it's still support & games.

Kinda also wish Capcom would support the 3DS more other than MoHu. I'm pretty sure they can brew up another RE or SF title for the thing.

*sorry for OT Euro sales talk. I might be wrong*

Hmm. The link you posted answered my question. I didn't underestimate at all. I overestimated.

Clicking that links you to

According to a breakdown of financial numbers from GameIndustry.biz, the Wii U moved 90,000 SKUs in Japan, 60,000 SKUs in the U.S., and a paltry 10,000 SKUs in both Europe and Australia.
And according to those numbers released from Nintendo

Nintendo's Wii U console sold only 160,000 units worldwide during the past three months, with the company blaming a lack of first-party releases for the poor performance. Software sales for the system were just 1.3 million units.

During the period Nintendo sold 90,000 Wii U consoles in Japan, 60,000 in the US and only 10,000 in Europe and Australia.

Lets say 3-month sales doubled next quarter in Europe due to Pikmin. 20K/3 months = 6.7K/month. Divided by 4 weeks gives you 1.7K. 4.5 weeks nets you less than 1.5K average over the 3 months.

Or even lets triple it for shits and giggles. It'll be between 2.2K and 2.5K.

So theoretically if the Wii U did a bit over triple its sales, it could've reached about 20K for the week of Zelda where its sales exploded by 685%.

That link is inaccurate.

90,000 Wii U quarterly sales refers to sales in Japan, NCL's principal territory.

60,000 Wii U quarterly sales refers to sales in "The Americas," or North America (+ Canada) and South America combined.

10,000 Wii U quarterly sales refers to sales in "Other," or every other unmentioned country including Australia, the continent of Europe, South Korea, etc.

Technically "sales" mean "consolidated unit sales," or the total hardware units of all SKUs (rounded to the nearest ten-thousand) sold from NCL's inventory to retailers OR from the inventory of overseas Nintendo subsidiaries to retailers.

Consolidated unit sales (shipments) and sales to consumers are related but not exact. Recently the Wii U has been over-stuffed in retail channels, so we get a phenomenon where sales to consumers are greater than consolidated unit sales (shipments).

They already gave it EX Troopers, Revelations, and Phoenix Wright 5. Some nice stuff that aren't ports. Even that little sound-based haunted mansion game. They might have since reduced their support because not everything did so well, but they've hardly been apathetic to the platform. Beyond that, Gaist Crusher must be an important IP to them if they'd doing the whole cross-media.

What I'm curious about in terms of Capcom's handheld support is where Sengoku Basara's going to go. It was on the PSP last time.

Or Megaman... I was really looking forward to Megaman Legends 3. Resident Evil Revelation gave me hope for the series again, and I'd love to see another RE on 3DS if it follows in the footsteps of Revelations and not 6.

How exactly is the same not true for the 3DS? We've got a system with absolutely great sales all around, and yet Japanese 3rd parties still prefer to put their games on cell phones -- a successful Vita wouldn't change anything about that.

Square, GungHo, Capcom and Konami won't give a shit, unfortunately.
GungHo has been pretty successful on Vita. I don't see them stopping their support...

So expectations for 500k in sales for GTA5 wasn't crazy after all :)

550k (PS3 only), but we have to see if GTAV will behave like the super frontloaded PS3 games or not.

PS3 games that sold between 300k and 370k first week and are above 500k:

{2009-03-05} [PS3] Resident Evil 5 - 321,670 / 520,564
{2011-12-01} [PS3] Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS. - 345,053 / 514,723
{2009-02-26} [PS3] Yakuza 3 - 356,867 / 509,306
{2012-12-06} [PS3] Yakuza 5: Yume, Kanaeshi Mono - 363,717 / 574,299

PS3 games that sold between 300k and 370k first week and are below 500k:

{2012-05-24} [PS3] Dragon's Dogma - 302,590 / 470,141
{2011-06-09} [PS3] Yakuza: Dead Souls - 307,592 / 417,504
{2012-11-01} [PS3] Tales of Xillia 2 - 331,533 / 427,109
{2013-02-21} [PS3] Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - 335,791 / 447,662

Looking at the previous game:

{2008-10-30} [PS3] Grand Theft Auto IV - 122,058 / 211,240

FW / LTD = 0.58.

Applying to GTAV: 304,752 / 0.58 = 525k

Obviously, this does not mean anything for how GTAV will perform. As I first said, we have to wait to see.

All Famitsu. Media Create numbers are higher, but at the same time they only have one game that sold between 300k and 370k and ended above 500k -- Yakuza 5. On the other hand, they have a FW / LTD = 0.51 for GTAIV, which applied to GTAV gives us 706k!
not happening, though

Sometimes we must set a barrier for these "pretty good" Vita software sales. MH4 will sell more than entire Vita software this year.
May be it will, but the same Vita third-party games would most likely sell less on the 3DS.
How much of a big hit are we talking here? Even if there is a 60/40 split towards Vita the ceiling we're looking at is what? 300-400k being generous?
Who knows, the first game was a bit hit and could just be the MH replacement Sony need.

Enterbrain -MH4 sold another 111k last week to take packaged total to 2.82m and still 96.7% sold so little inventory, another 10%+ in digital

Enterbrain - GTA V sells 304k on PS3 but 23k on Xbox360. Pokemon X/Y 2.096m was 83.9% sell through

God Eater is a MH replacement like Tales of is a Dragon Quest replacement.

Kantai Collection or Kancolle will be another big game for Vita in 2014.

It's a browser game with 800k registered players with the servers currently under load and registration to play locked down to a lottery system due to how insane the demand for the game is.

Having an offline version on the Vita will be potentially akin to P&DZ of the 3DS, if the signs and popularity of Kancolle is anything to talk about since it's getting a manga and anime soon.

P&D: 19 million users
Kanwhatever: 800k users

Following the user ratio, if P&DZ sells 1 million on 3DS, this Vita game would sell 40k. /videogamebusinesslogic

Yay Danganronpa. I wish the best for this series. It's selling much better than the Zero Escape series did, which is both great and sad at the same time.

Pokemon's gonna pokemon, too.

Thanks, so Week 36 and Week 39 for Vita and Wii U respectively?

Hmm, then the problem I see with the past few weeks declines being solely due to these announcements and anticipation of new SKUs, and that this will lead to a much improved Vita baseline, is that both systems were in decline prior to these announcements and don't really seem that much of a deviation from their prior trending.

I thought the 3DS was doing worse than the GBA in Japan as well. Guess not.
No it's definitely tracking ahead there. GBA did really well there but it was in North America where it really shined. I think up until the DS came out, it might've been tracking as the best-selling game system of all time here.... or at least very close to it. I know in the earliest days PS2 was beating it but I seems to recall that it flipped at some point.

Exactly, they may have accelerated the decline, but they were both doing terribly beforehand with no mention of the new models.

Interesting sales data.

[3DS] Monster Hunter 4 # <ACT> (Capcom) {2013.09.14} (¥5.990) - 111.230 / 2.817.937 <96,7%> (96.000 units in stock)
[3DS] Pokemon X / Y # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2013.10.12} (¥4.800) - 2.096.050 / NEW <83,9%> (402.000 units in stock)

Last week Monster Hunter 4 got a new shipment of around 200.000 units, the game is no longer supply constraint since half of those copies weren't sold.

About 2.500.000 units of Pokémon X / Y were shipped for its launch weekend, everybody who wanted the game could buy it. I didn't expect Nintendo to be able to produce so many copies, this is another Pokémon Black and White case.

For reference: (first main Pokémon title on NDS)

[NDS] Pokémon Diamond / Pearl (Pokémon co.) {2006.09.28} - 1.586.360 / NEW <95,4%> (76.000 units in stock)

I know Sony isn't goin to cut the price for at least 8 months, but could a price cut on the Vita 2000, encourage greater sales? Maybe if they position it near the same price of the 3DS XL?

They are pretty close in price now. On amazon.co.jp the vita is 18,900 yen and the 3ds xl is 18,000 yen.
