I feel Bravely Default getting eShop treatment is multiple good news:

- The demand is still high.
- Square Enix responds to the demand, which means they're treating this new IP carefully.
- It's probably not that hard to get an existing game to have an eShop version.

IIRC, the time between the decision being taken and the game going up was around a week.

That's a pretty damned quick turnaround. I wonder if it'll pave the way for more third party retail titles that have already been released to be uploaded? RE:R and KH:DDD might get new leases of life, who knows.

If Squenix is pleased with BD's digital performance, maybe they'll put Theatrhythm.

Is it 100% confirmed that the charts even count these?
Interesting use of the cards though - that actually works well for a good pre-order market; whereas buying the card over just online or physical was more hassle.

Famitsu tracks them, yes...

Famitsu shows all SKUs (versions) of games that are included in their ranking every week.

ZOE HD has the regular version for 3980 yen and the premium package for 8980 yen:

Idolmaster Shiny Festa has 3 versions and each (各) cost 5980 yen:

AKB48+Me has two retail versions: the game cart and the eShop card and each cost 5670 yen:

The closest thing we'll get is if Square Enix decides the game did well enough to brag about in their fiscal release on the 5th.

It's unlikely we will get a breakdown, but someone here might have the total retail shipment, from which you can work backwards.
A lot of ifs :-( Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your answer but it's just that I so much want to see how well it actually did. I am genuinely curious about how far this little thing will go.

Makes you wonder why they didn't release it on the eShop to begin with.

I actually think this is a good approach for bigger titles, first only offer physical sales, and if they turn out to be supply constrained offer a digital version as well. Best of both worlds. (Smaller titles are automatically supply constrained due to bad distribution that always comes with low shipment numbers. Those would profit of digital versions in all cases.)

Out of curiousity, why do you mean that it is better to do it like this rather than offer both things at day one?

Better to not piss off retailers?

IIRC Capcom didn't do day and date PSN for MHP3rd for those wondering about MH4.
I can see that point of view. But it will be more and more common, and tons of people still want physical copies. As long as the sales come in, i dont think that many really care about pissing of retailers. The fear of pissing of retailers is afterall that they think they will sell less copies, but has any retailer really refused to stock a game because of digital copies being available? It should rather be the opposite in my opinion, that the stores should be more willing to stock games to make sure that both things are available (to compete better with digital downloads).

Even if the mood of retailers were meaningless and digital sales could reach the ones of physical sales, virtual shops will never reach the kind of public presence with the potential of public reactions than can make a product a widespread phenomenon that retailers can offer for big titles. For this reason alone it's always preferable to fulfill as much of the demand as possible with physical sales.

But parallel digital sales are perfect for keeping public demand fulfilled and increasing once a lack of physical shipment and a long waiting time would instead create the danger of drowning out the demand.

Interesting that they wouldn't have released Bravely Default on the eshop if it wasn't supply constrained.

Makes you wonder why they didn't release it on the eShop to begin with.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because their projections were accommodated by the initial shipment, so if they released it on the eShop, they thought there might be more unsold copies left on store shelves.

So MH3G is clean off the top 50 now (fake edit: noticing it was last week too). Are people holding out for the discounted sku?

So they can release on digital and get you to double dip and also create more lengthy buzz for the game.

Glad to hear BD is doing well. I'm sure we will see RE:R on eShop someday. They could launch it as kind of a budget rerelease but avoid distribution costs etc and create buzz for the sequel etc.

This only benefits the retailers as far as i can see. From the gamer and publisher/developer perspective, not having digital versions on time just increases the chance of used copies being bought (taken into concideration that new/unused physical copies gets hard to find). It also means one less choice for the gamers.

Maybe if the game is released as digital download many, many months after the retail version. I cant see it having much effect when it is a few weeks in between.

Does he mean PS2 production as whole is ending, or just those marked for Japan? How will Sony combine their shipment totals to hide disappointing unit sales without PS2?!
Literally, all he says is "Regarding PS2, production seems to finally be ending." No other specifics.

It would be weird to end worldwide production. IIRC PS2 is still moving a few million every year in developing nations.

Now we just need Sony to end PSP production so we can see how even more depressing Vita sales are!

I don't believe Sony has been shipping PS2s to North America for a while. I picked up a brand new spare PS2 on sale for like $50 a few years back. It was the newest Slim revision with the power unit build into the hardware.

There are lots of them in Europe at least. The store I usually shop from has 50 + new slims in store.

Hawt damn! I nailed it this time, and I'm actually not banned so I can enjoy it. :3

I think I screwed myself next month with Yakuza HD and Animal Crossing though.

Congratulations to the winners.

Not so good as last month this time (Still third and fourth). But I'm happy because Bravely Default exceed my expectations :)

So what do people think would be a disappointment for Xillia 2? It obviously won't reach the heights that Xillia did week 1.

Kind of hard to make a comparison because Xillia will obviously be an outlier and Vesperia PS3/Graces F were reworked versions of previously released titles.

Considering that Tales games do almost all their sales in the first week, a debut below 300k would be pretty disappointing.

Well, it seems at least Sega was happy with that:

Sega said:
《Consumer Business》
In the consumer business, sales were strong in the packaged game software field for titles such as “HATSUNE
MIKU -Project DIVA- f ” targeting the domestic market
, as well as for continuing sales of titles released during
the previous fiscal year and sales of distribution titles and others. However, a reduction of number of titles
implemented as part of the structural reform policies announced on March 30, 2012 led to a year-on-year decline
in total volume of packaged software sales to 2,760 thousand copies, including 1,160 thousand copies in the U.S.,
960 thousand copies in Europe, and 640 thousand copies in Japan.
In the field of digital game software for mobile phones, smartphones, and PC downloading, the number of
registered users of the PC online RPG “Phantasy Star Online 2”, which launched services in July, exceeded 1
million and pay-per-use income exceeded forecast levels. The major smartphone title “Kingdom Conquest”
continued to perform strongly
, and our title line-up was expanded with the introduction of numerous new
additions including “The Clan Battle of Fate” which was developed jointly with Pokelabo, Inc.
Meanwhile, on the pachinko and pachislot game website for mobile phones and PCs, results were strong for
pay-per-use services, and the smartphone version of “777townSP” service was enhanced.
In the toy sales division, sales of the mainstay products such as “Jewel Pod Diamond” remained solid.
In the animated films business, distribution revenue was favorable thanks to the sound box office sales of the
16th theater film “DETECTIVE CONAN: The Eleventh Striker” and performance was strong in both program
sales and film distribution.
