Famitsu Top 10 Digital Sales September 2014

07. [PSV] The Legend Of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki (Super Price Series) <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2014.06.26} (¥5.184) - 10.357 (77,9%)

This sudden burst in sales can be explained with a little context: throughout most of September the game was on sale for 2800 yen for all Vita owners, and 1980 yen for PS+ subscribers (I was among those who bought it). So it wasn't selling for 5184 yen, as the charts might lead you to believe.

People said the same thing about Mario Kart 8 and that sold fine.

Have faith =)

uhhhh

Mario Kart 7 and Super Smash Bros 3DS overlap is not remotely comparable (not to mention since this was about Japan specifically, Mario Kart 8 barely moved any consoles)

Wii U vs. GC
Code:
sett. 98 - 1,936,363 / 2,290,553 (7/27) -354,190
sett. 99 - 1,939,748 / 2,303,705 (8/03) -363,957

MK8 bundle is coming to save the Wii U

XB vs. XBO
Code:
sett.07 - 193,280 / 33,471 -159,809
sett.08 - 195,812 / 34,648 -161,164

nothing to say, numbers are explicit

PS3 vs. PS4
Code:
sett.35 - 996,349 / 734,031 -262,318
sett.36 - 1,010,492 / 741,934 -268,558

DQH bundle is coming to save PS4... ehm, no...

PS4 vs. Wii U
Code:
sett.35 - 734,031 / 1,017,194 -283,163
sett.36 - 741,934 / 1,026,485 -284,551

February is still so faraway

It's always depressing reading Sony's IR documents.

I just look at Games, Pictures and Financial Services and don't look at the rest.

Battlefield Hardline releasing March 19 (same day as Type 0HD).

And FF Agito plus distribution on Vita is delayed due to techinical problems. I wonder if they will delay the physical release.

Btw operating profit = operating income right? Just fun to look at #s and attempt to compare them....

Sony gaming Q2 = 21.8B yen operating profit
Nintendo Q2 = 9.3B yen operating profit
Microsoft gaming Q2 = ?

In comparison to Nintendo's insane years...

487.22 billion yen operating profit FY 2007-2008... o_O... This is why Nintendo still has plenty of money in the bank lol.

Yeah, insane hardware and software sales (especially in the West) + weak Yen (I remember it being around 1€=140Yens back in the days) will do that to your operating profits.

It's one of the reason the gen. transition was so tough with the 3DS. Not only sales dropped sharply, but they were also hit by the change rates (Yen became much stronger then). Deadly combo.

Is the Xbox One numbers a secret countdown timer similar to the one in the movie Independence Day?

It's interesting that the larger new 3ds is selling 3:1 over the smaller one, I would think it would have been a larger difference than that.

Huh? Both models launched at the same time, so it's normal. If the difference between the 3DS and 3DS XL was so big back in the time, it's because the XL model launched over a year after the OG one.

And it's not mentionned in the OP, but the N3DS XL had some shortages last week, so it didn't sell as well as it could have.

A couple of mobile notes.

1.) GungHo has revenue of approximately $4.5 million a day ($1.2 billion) from January to September, with an operating profit of $680 million. This is up over 14% year over year. Puzzle & Dragons is still by and far the main driver, though Divine Gate (Acquire) has some success. They also bought 70% of Playphone to try and expand into the West better.

2.) Square Enix has released Final Fantasy VII G-Bike and 3594e in Japan.

3.) Nexon is making an extremely original looking mobile game targeted at Japan. It appears to be out.

4) Famitsu is now giving cover stories to mobile games:

The problem is the big shipment. First week sales are decent for a new IP in Japan.

There isn't a standard magic number that if it's passed a new IP automatically becomes successful. Retailers (and maybe Bethesda) had higher expectations and the failed. Now they have to deal with the unsold copies, especially for PS4 version.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess this is driven more by lowered expectations for Phantasy Star and Sonic than the delayed SKUs.

Thanks, goes back to 2003. Anyone interested in contributing to a Famitsu database (Covers / Cross review / Charts / etc)? I'd like to do that, but it seems like too big of an undertaking to take on my own. A community based approach could work. Any volunteers?

Thanks, but yeah, I'm not contemplating a searchable database like garaph (that's beyond my abilities), but if others with those abilities are interested then I can certainly help by inputting data. I guess the question is what can reasonably be achieved by a community based effort?

I'll pass. You can probably find a website with reviews scores. Cover will be a lot of work.

I can help with charts but I'd be more interested in keeping garaph.info updates...

Thanks, maybe you can contact Joshua Slone to see if he's interested in allowing others to update garaph.info, but I think ultimately as people lose interest over time a community based approach where others can take over is a better long term approach.

There's already Road's japantldrank. Are you looking for something else?

Yeah, Road's site is great for salesage. What I was considering was something that would probably appeal more to retro gamers. A record of reviews, actual charts (I personally like to look at what the charts looked like at a certain point in time). Plus there's also lots of other data like most wanted charts which might appeal to some people.

I'll pass. You can probably find a website with reviews scores. Cover will be a lot of work.

jk. haha

That's cool, you have plenty of work just concentrating on your own site. There isn't any site which collates all cross reviews, although most from the internet age are available across various sites, (plus those that scored 30+), it's just a matter of collating them. I started adding Dreamcast reviews to SegaRetro.org before, which was when I realised there was a need for a site which collated these. For pre-internet it would require collaboration with people who have the original magazines (I have a few myself).

Covers aren't that hard to come by, I toyed around with the idea before, but haven't decided on the final format yet (would prefer to have text instead/in addition to actual scans);

If there's interest then I think a wiki which anyone could edit would be the best way to go about this.
