Am I misremembering, or did it not get its price cut in Europe shortly after launch? I also seem to remember brisk price cuts in the US, but perhaps my memory is shot!

In the US, GC was forced to $150 by the PS2 about 6 months after launch, but then it took well over a year to get another price cut--and the fact that Nintendo actually stopped production due to a surplus inventory leads many to argue that the price cut to $99 was later/slower than it should have been.

Iwata implied that when justifying the 3DS price cut. They were being aggressive to avoid what happened with GCN, basically.

Good. If the man is willing to learn from his errors, he's just going to get better at his jorb.

re: Price cutting. While the jury is still out on Western sales, and the announcements from September were clearly a factor, is it safe to say now that Nintendo made the right decision in slashing the price so early and heavily?

I know it's easy to sit here and point at current sales, roll your eyes and go "well, of course a console is going to sell well when you cut the price that much" but there was at least some doubt about it before the cut. It also wouldn't be the first time Nintendo had slashed prices on a system only to see it still struggle along - GameCube being the one that springs to mind.
Actually, as IGN pointed out, price cuts have never worked for Nintendo in situations like this.

As a percentage it's the biggest drop for 3DS but as an absolute number Xbox dropped 10000 yen 3 months after release and Dreamcast 6 months.

This one seems promisingly efficacious, actually. The delta between their projected sales and the actual sales at $250 showed that their initial estimate for Pe/D was hugely out of whack, but it seems they were able to use that data to calculate a very accurate picture of the market response. This is evidenced by the fact that they are now very close to their initial sales unit targets, at least on the hardware side. Revenue and profitability went to hell, but eggs omelettes etc.

Ha. I opened the thread, glanced down first at the 3DS sales. Saw 145.271 and thought "Man, why are the japanese still buying so many 3DS' with nothing to play on them?"....Then I saw the software list...

I think Level 5 has left bad taste to PS3 owners with its efforts.

First days reports are the expected. Hatsune Miiku similar opening to the previous, high sellthrough for SCE's game, MGS not so hot.

Ni No Kuni is coming out in a week? I don't think it will even open bigger than UC3/BF3 which is pretty unfortunate

In the uk it was initially set to launch at £149.99 but then got a price cut prior to launch at £129.99 (admittedly, without a game or memory card).

A state of the art 40MB RAM (24 of which was 1T mo-sys Static RAM) system and the first Nintendo machine to use an optical disc. In May 2002.

It really puts that stunning price in context when you realise that Wii was launched at £180...4.5 years later.

I remember quite some time ago when I thought the same about the PSP when it was beginning its resurgence. There would be sporadic big releases, new colors, but over time it steadily grew its software sales on the top list.

So no one else (than the Chris, Road and myself triad) said anything about December predictions, should I suppose there's no interest in predicting or just in discussing what to predict (and thus I should just put whatever I feel like and call it a day?)? We'd doing a double combo this weekend if we do December overall predictions.

And on that topic, for next week, there's 3 horses in but do I fill the list with any of the following: CODMW3 360, PS3 HW (3 new SKUs), Saints Row Third PS3?

To be more concrete, as of right now I'd do 3DS/Vita HW and 4 SW (Mario Kart, Mario 3d, MH3G and FF13-2). Its about the major stuff and within ranges. We could add other HW (PSP) and other SW (Inazuma Go, Gundam VS) but I think it's probably not as major as the other stuff. Thanks for the input btw.

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
For December, I'd do

3DS HW
Vita HW
PSP HW
FFXIII-2
Mario Kart 7
New Love Plus
MH3G
Inazuma Eleven Go
Uncharted Golden Abyss
Hot Shots Golf 6
Dynasty Warriors Next
Warriors Orochi 2
Gundam Vs
SD Gundam G Generation 3D

...So many :p

Eh, but we don't know the first shipment!

I hope it doesn't ruin too much my predictions :(

I don't really care about shipment numbers, but SCE said they were hoping to make sequels if this game sold well. As I mentioned in the last thread, it's a remake of a PSone game that did 400k.

I know, I know... but we won't never play it. So, it's a lose situation for us whatever happens.

Not killing me in the excel process would be a plus too. But we'll be doing normal week predictions for all those (and Vita launch week will be like 3DS with specific Vita rankings) so its not like we won't do them, its just that for the "special totally blind guess a month-and-a-half before December ends" we should select just the cream of the crop.

These 4 games are the million sellers, it's not worth predicting for others. Weekly predictions do that work.

Better late than never, I guess. Nexon self-publishing, rather than getting Nintendo's support like it did in South Korea? Hmm...

[Edit] No sign of Nintendo on the box. I wonder if the special MS-themed DSi will ever get released as well.

New Nintendo retailer meeting could be coming soon.

Dates for the new Wii SKU that will be out in November re expected as well as dates for January and February titles (Luigi's Mansion 2 and new entries at Wii Select are speculated)

But when there will be the Western news, Chris?

Reggie did mention that they would be talking about the Wii 2012 lineup in "late December or early January", so I would expect the western announcements to come at the end of December.

Initial Public Offering? Well, I guess this at least means that there is a greater chance of the game coming to the West.

I did an interview with them around the time of the SK launch, but it had to be put on hold because Nintendo blocked it. However, there were indeed plans to release both the game and themed-DSi in the US and Europe, but they were unsure what Nintendo had planned. Seems Nintendo had no plans at all... :/

Nice OOT sales, very consistent.

OOT was starting falling naturally but then Nintendo announced the price cut as imminent, and then the fall became sharper.

182.998 (Launch week)
40.262
26.019
13.052
11.399 (Red 3DS week)
10.068
8.253 (Price kill announced)
Lower than 4470

Since the price cut week, new life

24.079
20.586
15.608
14.525
10.271
11.885 (3DS increase due to September Conference)
12.432 (Titties' week, 3DS from 58k to 70k)
10.104
9.373
9.377
9.280 (Pink 3DS week)
7.250

Total: 450.717 updated to 30/10/11
Next week, Famitsu probably will have it at 457-458k, but now it seems it's lowering after being the game to buy with 3DS.
However, it will rise again in Holidays, and then a long run to 600k LTD.

High ST even for Mario.
But very high for Uncharted and, above all, Battlefield 3.

Now, just for curiosity

[WII] Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo) - 116.153 / 453.722
[WII] Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo) - 78.349 / 334.690

Will SM3DLand do more than Galaxy 2 second week? Or at least another 100k?
