Well, it is the opposite of the Wild World strategy, where releasing version 1.3 of an N64 game resulted in 5 million sales.

I wonder why Nintendo had such a low shipment to begin with concidering that the DS game sold over 5 million copies. Maybe they thought it would have a slower opening and contunie to sell steady for a long, long time.
Definitely that. These are first week numbers Nintendo has only seen before with Mario, Smash, and Pokémon.

Still seems low considering the hardware numbers these past few weeks.

It's not a new game, it's a game on the market from last year, that already sold 1.6k millions in Japan, that will come out with a "The best" retail packaged edition next week, with MH4 already announced coming out in few months and an HD porting coming to console within one month. Plus, I don't know how big is the interested in having this game always installed on the console. Plus, it's not a limited edition 3DS console coming bundled with the pre-installed game as for Animal Crossing, but a "simple" black 3DS.

Probably they just assumed that almost every major 3DS title that was big on the DS had significant decline so AC would follow that pattern. Especially after that huge drop off for City Folk. I wonder with these numbers if Japan is telling Nintendo that AC is more of a handheld franchise like Pokemon given sales of the console entries versus the handheld entries.
Probably wanted to push digital sales but then thought better of doing it at the expense of regular sales.
Definitely that. These are first week numbers Nintendo has only seen before with Mario, Smash, and Pokémon.
Sounds all possible :)

so a value add for people who already owns a PS3 and pays for PS+? That's so limited.
Those are the once that will get the most value out of it, yeah, since they dont have to invest anything extra. I have no idea how limited it will be. A lot of people already have a PS3 and PS+, but i dont know how many.

But even if you dont own a PS3 or PS+, the initial deal is still pretty good in my opinion. You get 5 games for $17.99 (3 month subscription), or for free of you have a PS+ voucher (usually lasts for 1 week or 1 month). Sure, it works like a rental service, buy you can easily finish all those games within 3 months. I have no idea how much it will affect the sales though.

But Monster Hunter 3G and Mario Kart 7 will be difficult to match.

Wii U must sell well, and Animal Crossing needs stock enough to ensure an improvement.

Pokemon MD, Animal Crossing, NSMBU and MH3HD will carry at least 2 million units. Plus more from other releases. Should get to at least get to 42/3 million or so.

That's why I said Wii U needs to sell well and AC needs more stock. If some of these fails, 2012 will fail as well. I'm not sure about Pokemon, I don't think it will sell as well as you believe.

Total software sold in 2011 is 53.870.000. Can 2012 beat it?

I don't expect Animal Crossing numbers, but there's no way they can be that low.
There's only a 4k difference.

You're assuming MC = Famitsu for areas they both track. Go back and look at the early week sales between Famitsu and MC for NSMB2. Famitsu was consistently higher those first few weeks, and pretty significant amounts. Not as big as AC diff, but a decent diff. There was speculation about the download cards then, too. Didn't look, but Brain Age is probably similar with Famitsu being higher, as well.

I'm not sure where you're getting this from. Software is up on a week-to-week basis, compared to this week last year and in LTD.

It is slowing down because the difference over last year has only been decreasing since Black 2 / White 2.

iBHkAjy0KFmLL.png

I think the only way 2012 ends above 2011 is if the Wii U can have a performance as good as Wii had in 2006 (about 2 million units of software sold). Same for 2013.

IIRC, someone looked at the numbers a few weeks back and found that DC had sold twice as much software (or more?) at this point in its lifespan, despite only being slightly ahead in launch-aligned hardware sales.

Vita is the first console with day and date digital releases for new games. This might come into play when we talk about software sales. It could be very small but it's still there.

Even if you assume that digital sales are something incredibly generous like, say, 25% of retail, total software sales would still be pretty abysmal.

Nintendo needs to hit it out the park with Wii Sports U, if they can capture even just a minor or the people who enjoyed the Wii version, it'll do wonders for the Wii U.

Give it the Nintendo Land treatment. Make sports games that also feature Miis and Nintendo characters and also makes great use of the Gamepad. Leveraging their characters is a pretty wise move, they help sell systems and in return introduces Nintendo's franchises to everyone and as long as they're not slapped on to crappy games, this is probably the best way to further their brand.

Even if the digital numbers are 20% the software sales are still abysmal. Anyway Nintendo this year has had a very good year with the 3DS. The only real big underperformer was NSMB2 so far. Fire Emblem did amazing. Kid Icarus did better than most people expected (I remember people talking about sub 100k LTD). Pokemon B/W2 did well. Animal Crossing is doing amazing. I'm interested to see if Paper Mario continues the trend.

He said 10% was the average and PDf exceeded that by doing 15% iirc. Sounded to me like he'd know what he was talking about, why do you think it was guesswork?
From what i can remember, he used "i think/believe" in that tweet. Here it is, maybe someone can translate it again:

https://twitter.com/nakanohito_1go/status/243356315005640704

I dont think that he just took a wild guess, it is probably based on some data, but i'm not sure if he has access to sales data for companies/games in general to do an accurate average percentage. I could be wrong though.

Well, it is the opposite of the Wild World strategy, where releasing version 1.3 of an N64 game resulted in 5 million sales.

Yes, but most of those were to new consumers with the DS's expanded market. To keep those consumers interested in the franchise you would have to innovate or you know actually do something different.

If they would have released WW v. 1.5 or something, I bet sales would have been lackluster.

I think AC selling 5M has less to do with the fact that Nintendo didn't innovate with WW and more to do with the fact that it was the first time AC appeared on a handheld.

Kinda like MH > MHP.

NOOOOOooooo! Mpl got his ass banned before giving us a PLxAA comgnet comparison.

I'm actually putting that game back into the 500k range. Anyone else feeling confident?
