Anecdotal stuff. Doesn't really reveal anything on a broader level. That's what I mean. =)
Because it's anecdotal. Though it's guaranteed Vita will see a bump from GE2.
Oh yeah true. It being sold out locally doesn't necessarily mean the Vita stock is depleting at the same rate everywhere, but yeah a hardware (relatively) big bump is obviously guaranteed.

Well, while true that Nintendo is running out of playing cards, Vita sales aren't going to improve just because of that. The same could be argued for the Vita anyway. What next after Freedom Wars? :p
What cards have they played exactly outside of NSMBU? Mario 3D World will be the only "real" card since a year ago now. W101 and Pikmin 3 were never expected to carry the system. $50 price drop is a scratch.

So anyone in Japan know how well Vita/Vita TV is selling together with God Eater 2? I guess it will outsell 3DS 2:1 next week, probably 80k Vitas and 100k Vita TVs.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Talking about 3DS there, champ. They've fired off all Marios, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, even a Monster Hunter, and Zelda very soon. Smash Brothers is the last big box-tick for Big Nintendo Bullet Bills, I guess, other than another Pokemon.

WiiU's cards are all but meaningless when played if the system can never maintain its bumps, which a total and apocalyptic lack of third party software almost entirely ensures.

Akiba's Trip 2 took fifth-place with 53K combined PS3 + PSV sales

 • Combined PS3 + PSV sales (53K) are very similar to 2011's Akiba Trip for PSP (54K first week, 107K total)
 • Around 60% of the shipments of Akiba's Trip 2 for Vita + PS3 combined sold through in its first week.
 • Because Akiba's Trip sold 53,454, we can assume Akiba's Trip had ~89,100 initial shipments to retailers for both SKUs combined

*Please note: PS3 Weekly Software Dengeki sales (and the corresponding percentages) have been slightly adjusted this week to align with minor FY-to-date
discrepancies.
*Note: FY 2013 refers to the period from April 2013 through March 2014
For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Dengeki?
Dengeki is a website (it's also a brand of magazines / a book and manga imprint) that publishes sell-through Japanese sales data tracked by ASCII Research Institute, courtesy of ASCII Media Works, Inc. Every week they publish a nationwide snapshot of Japanese video game sales with the cooperation of more than 3,000 specialty game stores and convenience store chains all across Japan.

Why post Dengeki numbers when you have Media Create / Famitsu in the OP?
1) Unlike any other tracker, Dengeki gives us software numbers for Top 50 sales so we can track low-performing titles for a longer period of time
2) Unlike the others, Dengeki gives us total software sales for every platform, so we can track the relative health of platform software ecosystems
3) Dengeki is a respected sales tracker with 5 consecutive years of being reported each week in GAF threads

Is Dengeki less accurate than Media Create / Famitsu?
1) Dengeki is just as accurate as Media Create and Famitsu. Just because each tracker has quirks and natural deviations from the others doesn't mean one is inherently superior to the rest.
2) Dengeki is the tracker most unfamiliar to GAF / the public, and sometimes people confuse lack of dissemination with inaccuracy in sales figures
3) The amount of retail stores Dengeki tracks is similar to Media Create and Famitsu

Here are the differences between the trackers:

Media Create:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Media Create Co., Ltd.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 20 software sales with numbers
+ Top 50 software sales without numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sometimes presents sell-through figures
+ Releases first (at the same time as Famitsu)
+ Nintendo uses these numbers in their investor presentations
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not track download cards
- Does not provide software sales figures past the Top 20

Famitsu:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Enterbrain, Inc.
+ Tracks about 3,600 retail stores / chains
+ Top 30 software sales with numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through ranges for all titles
+ Has the most historical data available for GAFfers
+ Tracks download cards
+ Releases first (at the same time as Media Create)
- Does not distinguish between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not report total software sales

Dengeki:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from ASCII Research Institute.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 50 software sales with numbers
+ Top 3 software sales per platform
+ Total software sales per platform
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through figures for a few titles
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Inconsistent data reporting over the years
- Does not track download cards
- Releases nearly 24 hours after Media Create / Famitsu

It's going to be a weird situation when the Vita is selling more weekly than it does monthly in other territories. I'm sure Vita will get some more software support, but with the switch to mobile and the lack of attention even the 3DS gets, it's really hard to see a real revitilization in terms of software. It seems strange to me Sony is not launching Vita TV in the west this year. It basically seems like they are letting Vita die further in the west when they have a card to play

I'm not sure VitaTV would catch on in west. Would love to be proven wrong though.

And it should be a nice week for Vita next week.

In West I think Sony has already pretty much gave up. At least they are saving money by not putting any effort or whatsoever to it. Instead they are concentrating on PS4/3, which makes perfect business sense...

They would be taking attention from PS4 launch. Instead Japan get's VTV earlier as as "we're sorry that you have to wait for ps4" thing.

No. Kirby is a million seller and so is Mario Party (including the DS entry). Unless Zelda takes off like Phantom Hourglass, you'll also have plenty of other games that could keep up with it saleswise in the future.

They can sell Vitas as an accessory to the PS4 for now. It's not like it would sell any more or less than it already is that way.

Speaking more about hardware pushers. I'm sure there are Kirby fans out there that wait for a Kirby before jumping on but I can't imagine they're a numerous bunch.

Vita needed a GTA really, and a fresh feeling one despite needing to reuse 4's assets. Some must have game the west obsesses over (a far better COD may have done a good trick too) to justify anyone owning the device. Unfortunately ALL of Rockstar was working on V, so theres no satellite that could have even made it as their development circles the insane 1000 member gang. Bioshock never materialising was another nonsense moment too.

I was going back to the older media create threads and realized that until Christmas 2011, the Wii was actually fairly well supported by third parties in Japan.
Compared to the Wii U now? Sure. Compared to reality of what even "fairly well" third-party support should've entailed? Not at all. Thing was the far and away market leader for the first few years of the generation, and the third-party support didn't ever really pick up to close to comparable levels for a typical market leader. Not even "fairly well" levels, unless you're just using a "they released something or other" definition of "fairly well."

So do people think there is any chance the "4DS" launches late 2015? We're already looking at a decline next year when they will launch Smash, Yoshi, Kirby, and Mario Party. They'll probably reveal 2-3 more games for the year as well (3D Land 2? and possibly DQ11 with 3rd parties). Then you get to 2015 and it will probably be a steeper decline. They could launch a Pokemon remake but I doubt Gen 7 is ready until 2016 at the earliest and they could always just cross gen it. I guess it depends if Nintendo is ok with the decline they'll be facing in the next few years especially with probably not much good news from Wii U. It seems pretty early but that would be almost 5 years and it would be 5 years if it was early 2016. The next few years from Nintendo will be very interesting.

I think it's about 2 years too early to talk about any portable successor from any first party.

Yeah it is really early. I guess another question I wanted to get at is what can Nintendo do to keep the 3DS fairly steady over the next couple of years, and would it be wise to divert some of the resources they were going to use on Wii U back to 3DS.

Oh i think Bioshock will arrive in some form.

At this point it is similar case to Killzone E3 trailer for PS3 where it's point of honor for Sony to deliver on promise.

The smart thing would be amputation of dead weight and moving all resources to 3DS and it's successor.

There may be a 3DSi equivalent, but Nintendo is already dealing with requisite high prices for hardware/software outside of Japan. That's probably part of the reason for no 2DS (i.e. semi-price cut) in Japan for now. They really need to wait until they can get the prices lower on a system before launching a new one. 2 years might be long enough to mention that a new system is in development (there's always a new system in development, but they might actually say that one's in concrete development by then), but I think Nintendo wants 3DS to last for a long time (like DS's 7 years to a successor) to get 1) profit with Wii U failing and selling for a loss and 2) for a successor's hardware/software cost to be at a more acceptable level for a generation being weaned on touch-screen only free/$0.99 games.

I think 2DS could help a lot in sustaining momentum in Japan in late 2014-all 2015. However, we still don't know the entire first and third party lineup for next year. Iwata stated that first party lineup will still be filled with lots of content; I'm curious to see how much.

And then we can still have Bravely Default 2, DQXI and et cetera.

I don't really think Nintendo needs to do much to keep the 3DS going. They haven't stopped developing games on it, and third parties are still supporting it pretty strongly. In 2015 there might be rumblings of a new portable system from Nintendo, but I'll be surprised if there's anything even hinted at before that.

Not really entirely up to Sony with this one. Same scenario as Resident Evil PSP really, which is extra sour because it seems Capcom went out of their way to not do Revelaitons on Vita.

Beyond Mahvel, Capcoms absolute contempt for Vita is kind of amazing. I felt sure they'd try and repurpose Dragons Dogma into a smaller hunting game, carving out areas and recolouring Drakes, but thats before we get shit like "cant afford to develop a SFV, lol" and that bottom of the bucket DD card smartphone game thing. Hell, that Lost Planet 2 Vita tech demo is absolutely bizarre in hindsight.

I have no doubt Nintendo will bring it first party wise next year, even if they've exhausted the games that can sell over 2 million until the next Pokemon. What 3rd parties are doing is what is the most concerning at least in terms of consistency. The big games will obviously come. I'm interested to see if Sega keeps Atlus making 3DS games as they have been a very strong supporter.

My prediction is that 3DS' successor will be released in late 2016, so three years from now. The latest I can think of is Q1 2017, but I suppose they wouldn't like to lose the Holiday frenzy like they did with 3DS.

...Obviously, if launching in late 2016 means having another Wii U situation, it's much better to wait for Q1 2017, but that's another story XD

The 3DS has a big userbase already so the focus moving forward shouldn't necessarily be on major system selling software (though that obviously helps) but on providing a steady stream of both first and third party content. Honestly they should be more worried about the West (and WiiU) than Japan.

They've gone through their major franchises. They have Kirby, Yoshi's Island, and Smash as potential biggees next year, so they could be referring to that. (Majora's Mask re-release wouldn't be bad, either.) There's also a chance in the world of DLC to do something crazy like release Mario Kart 7 DLC racing packs and then release a "Mario Kart 7 Complete" for more easy sales without a ton of work. If Luigi's Mansion Wii U turns into a real thing, then we may also be seeing the start of 3DS/Wii U cross-developing after DKC: Returns on 3DS from Wii. Super Mario 3D Land 2 doesn't seem out of the question for 2015, too. There were two (real) Super Mario Lands on GameBoy. Retail compilation of 3DSWare games might warrant release, as well. Already seen Art Academy 3DS from the DSiWare games. Maybe a Pushmo/Crashmo compilation release?

As suggested by MagicPaint, maybe they'll start releasing "lesser known" franchises as well, in order to improve them saleswise: 3DS so far has seen overperformers for lots of Nintendo classic franchises; it could be the right time to bring back some not-so-used-anymore brands.

About other big franchises...people always forget Rhythm Tengoku and I don't know why :p (at least in Japan)

If we're talking about sequels, I think another Fire Emblem is almost a certainty.

Theres so much tech pouring out into the world from Tactus to haptics that would make for an amazing "Gamer Phone" far more nuanced than the PSP Go Xperia that I could see that being the angle. But then they could have done that THIS go around but still havent.

I would not be opposed to buying the game and all the DLC for an Awakening 2 on 3DS.
And I suppose Nintendo would not be opposed at having another 500k seller in Japan and...in the end, Awakening will reach 1,5 millions LTD WW, isn't it? More or less 500k in Japan without counting digital sales, 390k in US (digital + retail) as of two months ago, I think, and the game sold quite well in Europe as well; it should be reachable.

Indeed I don't think there will be one in the traditional sense.
Sony has already acknowledged that dedicated gaming handhelds are dead.
But they can still make a dedicated Android based Playstation mini-tablet with Gaikai and traditional controls.

I've been guessing either late 2015 or late 2016 for quite a while.

A traditional video game system sees its sales peak in the third year, and given that almost all of Nintendo's biggest brands have at least one release along with their relative inability to launch new major franchises on the system, I don't really see the 3DS bucking that trend.

Having more than 2-3 years of declining sales would be insanity for them given the amount of pressure on the system. However, the system is selling okay, so there's not an immediate incentive to move earlier than that. As such, it's the date range that makes the most sense to me.

I think the 3DS has seen its peak and will continue to sell steadily with solid sellers along with a sprinkling of system sellers, until Nintendo replaces it in 2016. There's a pretty big amount of games and sequels Nintendo and third parties can bring.

My concern is how expensive it will be to develop for the 4DS. Japanese devs like(d) the DS/Wii/3DS because they were still cheap to develop for.

Borderlands 2 is a port job though. Unless Bioshock Vita turns into a quick port as well do you really think Sony's going to fund it after ignoring it this long? It's not COD and they didn't even invest for a Declassified sequel.

Revelations HD beat it's targets already and we haven't heard anything negative about the Wii U contribution to that. The only thing we've really heard on the Wii U front sales wise from Capcom is that MH3U did pretty well.

Super Mario 3D World is Wii U's first flagship title. It needs to sell is an understatement. It won't be in these charts in a couple of years if sales don't pick up by February

Personally, I think it is the right move to keep Vita TV off the west for now. Here is all about next-gen consoles right now and releasing Vita TV anywhere near the holiday period in the west would be worse than not launching at all.

After the next-gen fever is over on Q1 of next year, I think Sony has a much better chance to promote and sell Vita TV successfully here.

As for if there is a demand for Vita TV here, I guess cheaper is always better, especially for those who have PS plus and thus, have already a huge library of Vita games that they would like to play but don't want to go portable or to spend that much on the system. That, along with the Remote Play with PS4 feature, give the Vita TV a quite nice value proposition imo.

Moving the goalposts?

You need to rewind to when the Vita was announced and people said it was going to blow the 3DS away.

Suddenly from that we now have a system which isn’t anywhere close to its competitor and in any given week has only outsold the 3DS like 3 times since release yet that has now turned into ‘Vita is doing great’.

Say the 3DS sales were 50% of what they are now but it was still the #1 selling system would people be saying 3DS is doing great? The 3DS would be getting flamed and rightly so.

The one place on earth where handhelds should sell well is Japan. If 20k – 30k a week is great then yes the bar has been decreased dramatically.

The Wii U selling poorly are irrelevant to the sales performance of the Vita.
Im referring to members putting vita in the hot seat for selling so poorly when the wii u is selling much worse, and after the wii at that. Then have the nerve to complain at my goal post comment when if this were last gen, the 3ds would've been the a "failure". The 3ds would be luck to get psp's numbers after all is said and done. As smokey said, vita is not doing great but it's not going anywhere either. The revisions and vita tv are indicators.

Truth is handhelds are doing poorly in general and if sony or Nintendo wants it to prevail, they need to do something drastic. Pokemon and Mon Hun are not enough to stop or even slow the plunge but atleast what sony is doing with making the vita a companion and stream box could breath new life in the way handhelds are viewed.

The Vita isn't selling well. It's not even pulling mediocre sales. It's selling terribly.

Thing is, most people counted it out long ago and there was much talk of discontinuation. There was a time when a run of 20k+ weeks was a pipe dream. Next week might be the biggest the Vita has ever seen and it comes at a time when the 3DS is still riding high from the MonHun / Pokemon launches.

The fact that it's still standing in the ring blindly throwing weak punches (like a Champion) is the source of any positivity. It ain't that it's particularly alive, it's more that it's not dead. It's the plucky underdog that just won't go down.
These are man tears I am shedding.
