Does complaining about platforms you hate make yourself feel better? Because all I see are people who can't hold back their seething hatred for underpowered platforms hide for a single post in a thread about sales numbers.

Console warrior bullshit should go in another thread, if not in the garbage bin. And that's what you're defending, and of course peddling in the rest of your post I decided not to quote.
Or, and bear with me here, you could try understanding that some people would rather see games made with the increased fidelity and other possibilities enabled by their higher end systems. It's lovely that you don't care about the difference between a pocket calculator and a powerhouse, but it's hardly obscene that others do.

I really didn't want to get involved as I think it's been made clear that it's off-topic, but your militant insistence that only 'warriors' care about this sort of thing is intolerable.

I think the reason is because the Vita has been barely staying above Wii U this year despite it getting several relevant releases, while Wii U's first major release is Mario 3D World in a few days. The power of Nintendo's first party franchises looms large, though the droughts are definitely taking their toll on the system, and Nintendo seems to be doing bugger all to alleviate the problems.
I don't think it does loom large currently. Kart and Smash are about all there is on the horizon, and if they do squat, what larger cards can be played? Zelda? Metroid?

They certainly have some fearsome IPs, but they're all on the 3DS too. Given that this year is starting to look like it'll be smaller than last year for the 3DS, and that next year may be smaller still, I think they will continue to focus their efforts on the handheld.

I think its a great idea if Sony/Nintendo do develop jrpgs. I feel like there's greater sustainability when a first party makes a jrpg.
Nintendo should try to repeat the success they had with The Last Story, Xenoblade, Magical Starsign, Soma Bringer, Glory of Heracles, and Golden Sun.

Guys no one is saying Vita is now an incredibly popular machine that will take the world and Japan by storm
"As a fan of Nintendo I must admit that Sony has taken the crown both in the home and in the portable market, at least in Japan, and I seriously fear that 3DS could end with the same third party support than WiiU."
I know, I know, troll post.

Selling 77% more is "barely above"?

Wait what. Selling like... 500k (this is half a million by the way, just in case, yknow) more units is not "barely above" dude. What goddam blurred lens are you viewing these threads through?!

400k, and the difference is 10% of 3DS YTD so it's insignificant :p

I was referring to worldwide, which is the driver of the notion. Looking at Japan alone paints a much bleaker picture of the situation.

If Kart and Smash fail, that's it. They'll have played all of their best cards. Zelda is chump change next to them, and Metroid is laughable in terms of major sales.

I do agree in that Nintendo will shift focus to the 3DS and it's future next year, leaving the Wii U in an awkward situation.

Yes I'm sure you think you have what you consider "reasonable" objections to some consumer electronics, but for the rest of us the constant fanaticism over pieces of plastic is annoying, idiotic, and wastes time, no matter what the conversation entails. There are other threads for you to complain about hardware you don't buy, for whatever benefits that gives you personally.

This will be my last post on the topic in this thread, considering issues of "quality" aren't even really on topic at all. I'm a long-time lurker of these threads, so there's a lot of pent-up frustration here as to how quickly the sales threads turn into bickering.

Try speaking for yourself, rather than some imaginary group. It'll make it easier to take you seriously.

You should also stop assuming what I do and don't own.

If Atlus were to put Persona 5 on the 3DS or Vita, setting aside the meltdowns that would ensue, I feel it would signify continuing divide between Japanese developers and the Western market.

As the platform with the greatest commercial potential in the region, it makes sense to put their eggs into the 3DS's basket. The problem is handhelds are losing share in Western markets to smart devices, Western developers have never been particularly interested in them (and you have studios like Ready at Dawn moving out of the handheld "ghetto"), and their target demographic skews younger and so isn't necessarily the ideal audience for certain franchises.

I expect they'll also continue to trod along releasing software primarily for the PS3 in the console field, since it's still pretty viable in Japan, but as it's software sales continue to decline in the US and EU and Western developers are much quicker in moving to the PS4 and XB1 and shaping the market there.

PSV - 961.982
WIU - 542.667

Vita has sold 77% better than Vita and is the second best selling console in Japan, Wii U is behind the PS3 in YTD terms and the PS3 is basically a zombie console.

Please, stop being silly.

WW as in -10,000 shipments to Europe and stuffing the channel in the US? Wii U is falling behind Vita on a WW basis just because of awful European sales. Wii U does better by just 20-30k per month in the US and is behind by more than that in Japan and Europe.

The markets are just too different, and will only become more different as time goes on. The fact that neither of the next gen consoles are coming out in Japan this Holiday season is proof of that.

I don't buy it. You're in Media Create thread, replying to someone stating statistics about JPN YTD ups, and you suddenly switch to worldwide performance? For convenience?

That' a great idea but most of those games released at later life cycle of Wii right? Can they repeat such strategy in such early state of Wii U?

WTF happened to this thread? Seriously Vita had a great year and this week was a monumental achievement for the system. It's absolutely amazing how this suddenly turned into a debate about the IPs and crap like that. I kinda wish this thread would return to beating a dead horse again (Wii U).

He asked why people always compare the Wii U and Vita situations, and I responded.

Anyways, to be back on topic, how much do people think the Wii U will sell next week with Mario 3D World and Taiko? Same question for 3DS with One Piece?

Does the Vita have anything (big) lined up for it next week out of curiosity?

Looking at the Vita, it just didn't seem to me like the only reason people weren't buying it was price. Plus, the Japanese value portability a lot. As such, the Vita TV, while cheaper, isn't portable. Also for quite a number of people, it doesn't have the games they are looking for.

For the Vita itself, I'm happy it's not completely dead, but had the Vita hit this number without any new hardware revision/model (Vita TV), I think it would have been much better for the Vita. I guess we'll find out eventually whether the Vita TV brought any new audiences into the fold.

Everyone stop arguing and think of the children! Those poor, strange children from Conception II who are coming to our Vitas! Why won't you think of the children!!

Because they only sold 30k!
From the pattern I observed so far, these games usually attained that sales number(roughly 30k-40k). So for anime tie-in game like SAO or something akin like Kantai Collection the numbers should be similar right?

The Sword Art Online PSP game sold about 200k IIRC.

Congrats Vita! The one week of the year you've sold more than the 3ds! Savor it, because it probably won't happen again for a very long time =P

This is stupid, most of the people here own a 3ds, they just don't want to see Persona 5 on it. It has nothing to do with being "console warriors". You are being pretty insulting when it's absolutely unnecessary. The posters you have responded to haven't been fanatical at all. Just chill out.

Vita sales are up 60% from this YTD compare to last year at the same time. Every other system has declined, some massively so. I really don't get why people want to lump it with the Wii U when it's been a much more successful system. Obviously the Vita has been the furthest thing from a success but people have been writing it dead for a while in here and the little bugger proves people wrong once in a while.

I'm not sure what you would consider a respectable userbase. Personally I'd like to think it's respectable enough for third parties to continue to support that thing and there are still upcoming titles that would lead credence to that notion.
Well when you're comparing YOY sales and the previous year had awful results, it's not hard to see respectable results % wise. Considering price drops, new models, a set top box, Soul Sacrifice, multiple other Monster Hunter clones, I sure as hell hope the system would be up 60% from 2012. Is it getting support? Sure, to some degree, but the real success stories are largely of very similar games in very specific genres. At what point do developers abandon anything else? I would say the best thing that Sony was able to accomplish in 2013 was it finally was able to kill off the PSP, the tricky part is we haven't seen those users migrate to the Vita.

wow, god eater did really well, and vita tv had a decent launch. should improve the vita's baseline above 30k (maybe 40k?) for the rest of the year.

interesting that nintendo left the end of the year open. zelda comes out at the end of december, but it's hardly a major franchise in japan these days, and there's no date at all for mario party. it's fairly empty for the rest of 2013 on the 3ds.

This is my worry as well. I'm sure Freedom Wars wouldn't be hindered by its similarity to God Eater, maybe it will reach 100k number or more for its first week. But having another success by similar game of the same genre isn't particularly delightful. What'll happened if the market become over saturated? Sony should try to juggle more games with different genre for Vita.

Good week for Vita. Sony has taken the right steps throughout the year to make it a viable platform in the japanese market (price cut in spring, games, hardware revision, Vita TV).
Unfortunately the same can't be said for the western markets.

I'm thinking the majority of people who have bought the Vita TV are current Vita owners.
I think that's true and also mean that future game that looks alike aka Freedom Wars wouldn't affect much on the hardware sales number despite the said sofware probably will have a good start.

This is a good week for Vita, GE2 in Japan, Tearaway soon for the rest of the world. But sad thing is that while GE2 is a massive hit, Tearaway will be largely ignored D:

Ok, 2 weeks this year =)

I love my Vita, glad to see it sell reasonably well this week, but I don't think it'll take long to fall back to its usual levels. What games other than FFX and X-2 are coming out for it in the next few months? Tearaway looks great, but it's not going to light up the charts anywhere.

Well that's pretty much obvious, only gamers on the internet message boards know that a game called Tearaway exists :/
Still it's nice to see that they're trying to get prices of new portable games considerably down, at 25€ it seems worth it. The era of full price portable games is finally over.

So how badly do we think LRFFXIII is going to crater?
Hopefully as much as it deserves. But I wouldn't be surprised with a 400k-500k opening week.

Winning Eleven 3DS first week sales actually increased from 2013 to 2014. Still sports games sell incredibly poorly on both 3DS and PSV. I think it's because of Konami's decision to split the franchises up into 3DS and PSV by the time the Vita was released (the 3DS got Pro Spirits 2011 at launch but PSV never got Winning Eleven). It makes transitioning from the PSP difficult, because some day support will end and then people might be forced to buy both handhelds to play sports games (they won't).

Tearaway just doesn't have the appeal for Japanese I think. Poor marketing makes it even worse. I don't know if miracle could happened and Tearaway could sell more than 10k there.

Sony seriously need to pumped out more IP. They should make a true Patapon game, not a hunter-game masquerade as Patapon that is Patapon 3.
Garaph (Famitsu) says it had a 605,660 opening.
That's still impressive number on its own, but as a FF game that number is miniscule I guess :p
