in your dreams

nature proves that a mouse will always be eaten by a cat, you can't go against nature

I think it's not wrong saying that Minecraft saved Vita and Splatoon saved Wii U, as Vita has a solid weekly line-up while Wii U hasn't

I didnt say Splatoon is doing bad, it made a miracle cause anyone could have imagined how much it has been sold

so if you ask me what have would been Vita and Wii U sales w/o those games I would have replied what I replied
if you wanna sell hw games must be released every week
Hehe. We can only hoped that the cat won't end up getting level-5'ed like layton and inazuma there.^~^

For wii u and vita i feel both hw actually had almost the same problem except that in details, in it is the exact opposite things.

Wii U had huge title seller like Splatoon and supported by SMM which is another huge game but nothing else. While Vita had Minecraft but lesser big title for all its other release. In a way, both hw are kinda brothers lol.

Next week will give a hint how far MHX will go. There are 4 big weeks remaining, Capcom had a 2,5m shipment target until the end of March and after 2 weeks boxed and digital sales are at 2,1m+. Shipment is guaranteed to exceed Capcom's original estimate before the end of the year (if it's not there already).
Are you sure? There aren't copies on shelves. Yodobashi only has one store with MHX in the whole country (just in Nagoya lol)

http://www.yodobashi.com/ec/product/stock/100000001002805930/index.html

Bic Camera is sold out on Shinjuku and Ikebukuro, checked by myself, and also sold out on Yamada Denki.
Tsutaya was still reporting stock problems this week...

I guess this weekend most of the shops will recieve a new shipment, but I doubt it can meet demand until january.

I agree on what you said, just wanted to note that without copies on shelves, 3rd week can mean nothing.

Damn, Mario RPGs used to sell so well

maybe it's just because I'm in the NA market where the game is still a ways off but marketing seems especially low on this one

seems to be a combination of one coming out too recently, and the game not looking as "new".

edit
i'm not sure on the marketing. It probably isn't much like you said.

Couldn't agree more, and I think this has been a trending especially in these last years of this gen. At least Wii U will end up having three or maybe four million sellers and Vita a Microsoft game, lol.

I don't get why everyone thinks Triforce is a miss. It's selling slightly better than Four Swords Adventures did. It's honestly generally an accessible implementation of FSA, which I think is exactly what they were going for. Yes I do think having 2 player local would have been fantastic, but that really seems to be the only big misstep imo. I do agree HHD made the most sense. I also would guess they spent the most time on that one.
But why would they want to repeat the sales performance of Four Swords Adventures considering that was also a low-selling spin-off? It's a miss in that Zelda isn't about multiplayer. People like the solo adventure part of the series, they don't want a multiplayer puzzle game. I'm sure it'll be profitable but having it compete with Four Swords Adventures is setting the bar really low for a spin-off. They could have made better use of those resources. There was no demand for a game like it, regardless of the quality of the finished product.

Games like HHD or Youkai Watch Busters are taking something people already enjoy in the main franchise and expanding on it. Triforce didn't do that and that's why very few people cared.

Still a better idea than Metroid Prime Federation Force though. I'm calling dibs on "Metroid Bomb: Federation Flop."

In 2014, The Wii U has Sold according to Media Create ~618,000.
So far in 2015, The Wii U has sold ~604,000, and there Are still 4 weeks left, so, it need an avg of of less than 4,000 all weeks by now... I know this is a silly question, but there Are still people who think Wii U will be down YOY? :p

I think it was obvious since a couple of months. A more interesting comparison would be with 2013 sales. do you have some data?

If you recall FSA required to have multiple GBAs and link cables so I don't think Nintendo could read too much into the sales of Four Swords Adventure. Although they should've pursued this type of game during the Wii/DS gen as I feel the audience would've been more receptive to it. Especially during the height of the NSMB franchise.

I'd hesitate to even give it 40K really.
Don't release your games in Monstercember kids. Next two weeks are gonna be a massacre, it's gonna be hard to look at...

2013 after 49 week - 641,000
2015 after 49 week - 608,000

2013 total Sales - 898,000

Compared to 2013, 2015 has another week of Sales, 52 weeks VS 53 weeks.

There is a Chance, but is unlucky.

I Say ~850,000 for 2015 total, which isn't much lower.
If not 850k, definitive Over 800k, which is also bigger than my old 750k prediction of June 2015 ( let alone my 550k prediction back in January 2015 ).

Do we have official numbers for Pokemon Battle Trozei?
Since it's not a F2P title, I'm pretty sure we don't have any.

***

By the way, here's a suggestion I've been wanting to make for a while (but I keep forgetting...). What about adding a "Context" section in the OP every week. It would includes stuff to, well, give context to the sale numbers. Something like:

- Nintendo 3DS got a new colour today
- PS Vita is getting a price drop in two weeks
- Monday was a holiday
- that game was completely sold out this week
- etc...

The goal would to give people some additional info that's not in the chart, but also to avoid the front page being nothing but "omg, why the PS4 bump?!!".

Obviously, it'd need to be there when the thread is created, so we'd have to find a way to have things ready for Chris to add it to his post before the numbers go live. Maybe some trusted gaffers (who live in Japan, preferrably) could take care of that?

It'd be very short list, with general info (not an in-depth analysis of the market), just enough to give some context to some sales data which may not be immediately understandable (like sudden incrase of sales for a game).

Steins;gate should do okay, I'm not expecting numbers close to what the original did on PSP though.

Will VD bomb? I thought the SK crowd was quite present on PSV. Which debut are we expecting? Sub-80k?
I feel like the 'Senran Kagura' crowd early in the generation (Burst/Shinovi Versus) is nowhere near as big as the crowd that still exists on handhelds now (2/Estival Versus).

Valkyrie Drive had a complete lack of promotion until very recently - I don't think we even saw any gameplay until a week or two ago? I'm not expecting great numbers. Not a disaster, but nothing special.

Wasn't VD advertised as the next project from SK producer & developers? I thought that announcing anime + PSV game + mobile game at the same time signalled the intention of finding SK successor in terms of popularity (also, SK wasn't advertised much at the beginning).

VD should at least do as well as the original SK game in 2011 (3DS installed base was lower than current PSV installed base at the time and much younger). SK series opening week:

SK: 54k
SK Burts: 71k
SK SV: 92k
SK2: 47k
SK EV: 75k

Well, it's not just advertised as the next project from the Senran Kagura producer... it is the next project, lol.

I agree they definitely have expectations for the IP, but I don't think that necessarily means equalling their highest selling FW in the series of all time (I noticed you quesitoned < 80k expectations before, but only one SK has ever beaten that).

I just feel like there's a lot of similar games already available for the console now, versus when Senran Kagura first launched on 3DS (there was very little like it) and when it first launched on Vita (when there was very little like it and it coincided with a price cut; plus being the first fully 3D game in the series).

We've already seen Criminal Girls and the latest Neptunia suffer from this - just saturation of these kinds of titles releasing recently.

And besides, announcing anime + saying they want to find similar popularity to an established IP doesn't always equal success, or else Gaist Crusher would still be a thing ;)

By the way, how is the anime doing? Is it popular? Because it seems the ballpark for Vita games based on moderately popular anime is 25-30k FW generally.

50./50. [3DS] Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (Square Enix) {2015.08.27} - 1.883 / 850.377 (-11%)

DQVIII is really having some nice legs (it should be close to 900k units considering eShop sales).
It really is, but I was expecting the million mark. Maybe VII was getting more love than VIII, since iirc was one of the best selling PS games.

DQVIII is really having some nice legs (it should be close to 900k units considering eShop sales).
I am guessing it is clearance stock at this point.

It really is, but I was expecting the million mark. Maybe VII was getting more love than VIII, since iirc was one of the best selling PS games.
It had a recent iOS port that sold well that took away some sales and hype from the 3DS entry. Most were expecting lower sales than the typical Dragon Quest remakes on the NDS/3DS, so this isn't that surprising.

Aren't Criminal Girls and Neptunia RPGs? VD is an brawler so that shouldn't really be an issue.

The point wasn't that they're RPG's, it's that they're fanservice-heavy RPG's and there's plenty of those available already; just like VD is a fanservice-heavy brawler of which there are plenty available already.

By the way, I'm not trying to justify it because obviously if you're launching a new brand you do want it to go wherever you know there are similar, popular games, I'm just offering reasons why the game may do less compared to SK (which judging by pre-release hype, seems pretty obvious).

That doesn't really matter, 99% of anime games are cheap shovelware, this is a proper game like SAO or Gundam.
Point taken, but isn't SAO a ridiculously popular anime and Gundam a historically popular series, which is a bit different to what's going on here?

So will VD underperform because of saturation in the fanservice-heavy market? Let's hope it'll succeed in some way, otherwise Marvelous would close the year terribly.

anyway, DQ8 sold 400k less than DQ7, that's what should have been pointed out

or using another comparison, actually DQ8 barely sold as much as DQ7 sold in the first week

in the end, DQ8 is the worst result for recent DQ remakes

DQ4 (DS) : 1,3mln
DQ5 (DS) : 1,3mln
DQ6 (DS) : 1,4mln
DQ7 (3DS) : 1,2mln
DQ8 (3DS) : 0,85mln

It's been a terrible couple of years for Marvelous in general to be honest, I think. Between the write-down on Kaoi; Senran Kagura showing the audience has shrunk on both 3DS and Vita; Net High being a sales disaster and Lord of Magna/Popolocrois/IAVT/Luminous Arc only seeing moderate sales, I think they need to go back to the drawing board.

They did very well early in the gen getting in on markets quickly (i.e. SK on 3DS and then successfully transitioning to Vita; Rune Factory/Harvest Moon early on 3DS; Valhalla Knights/Muramasa on Vita) but really seem to have hit somewhat of a brick wall lately. I'm not expecting much from Uppers and I don't know what else they have in the pipeline.

At least they have XSEED committing to the Steam market for the west.

But 90% of my friends went digital so ...

I think it is premature to see the final result for DQ8.

I like fanservice (I'm in the SK threads, the DOAX3 ones...) and I know I won't get this game because I think they're going too far with this new IP. I know some others feel the same way.
Obviously, might be different in Japan, but I think there's less appeal than SK or regular fanservice games.

Edit: I think Marvelous' problem is bigger in Japan than in the west. Not necessarily a "go back to drawing board problem", but rather a mismanagement/bad marketing one.

Thanks for the numbers. As some pointed out, the mobile version must have taken some sales. Btw, do folks expect DQIX being ported to NX?

The way the "fanservice" market is approached always seemed odd to me.

For the most part, the general Japanese audience seems notably uninterested in games where the selling point is "fanservice!!!", but the fundamental game itself isn't very appealing.

On the other hand, we see series where there's a strong fundamental game (Fire Emblem, Persona), and then there's "fanservice" poured on top perform very strongly and see notable sales growth.

To me, the takeaway here would be "Well, if we're making fanservice games, for each sequel and/or successor, we should really double on game quality." Instead, we tend to see games that double down on the amount of "fanserivce" present, and the series end up going nowhere or even steadily declining.

The previous games had the luxury of being the first mobile versions of those games.
Dragon Quest VIII was out on mobile for years.
Not only that but significantly cheaper. Mobile is by far the biggest platform for gaming in Japan, obviously that will have an impact. The circumstances surrounding DQVIII 3DS is very different from previous remakes.
