[WIU] Wii Fit U # <HOB> (Nintendo) {2014.02.01} (¥5.985) < 6.492

There were signs from 2011 and black balance board release that the specific market was dead.
Well, Wii Fit U was already in a console bundle in JP and could be downloaded digitally. Why would you buy the retail version unless you never had the original Balance Board, etc? It doesn't make the number good or anything though.

There is a retail version without balance board and it's tracked.

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this information, but I guess you guys could be interested on that. Yahoo! Brasil reports that Nintendo is shifting its focus and will invest on tablets and smartphones from now on. Also, they report that Nintendo does not reject a fusion with other companies or even selling all of their IPs. They say that their source is Nikkein Shinbun. I don't buy it at all. Pretty weird info. But if this is true, I'm speechless...

They already had their investor briefing. This sounds like a butchered version of what that meeting stated

Using Google Translate, the article is just about...that Iwata's interview with Nikkei from last week. There is no direct talking of "investing all in smartphones and tablets", just about using mobile as well. The "selling all their IPs" was probably the licensing talk but with a strange interpretation. As well as the M&A talk.

Seriously, if GT is right, the article has nothing wrong.

I don't think the part of investing on smartphones/tablets is true at all.

Really interesting, Capcom dont count budget re-releases, so those added sales are mainly due to digital.

A series sells fewer copies on a 1.6 million install base than it does on an install base of 14 million *shock horror!*
How can anyone take you seriously with continued posts/excuses like these. A brand new game selling worse than a re-release and it's supposed to be expected because of install base.

edit: A-Train 3DS has a 50k sales target according to sinobi.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Both positions are justified imo, the WiiU Userbase is a joke compared to the 3DS, there are probably more people owning a 3DS that never played the original DKCR Wii, than WiiU owners. After the Wind Waker HD Bomba compared to OoT 3D it's a given. Even Skyward Sword sold sold less than OoT on 3DS lol.

Of course comparison will and schould be made and but let's be honest most games that have a similar counter part on 3DS will outsell the WiiU version - especially when it's a "mainstream" DK IP. Even Smash 3DS will outsell the WiiU version and that has been the strongest console exclusive First Party series for the last two generations.

It depends what the other opinion is.

If it is the opinion that SS and WWHD were bombs that should never happen and have no excuse I agree.
If it is the opinion that no matter what a game will sell less because of userbase I couldn't disagree more.

Now, except that we compare handheld to console Zelda that have different power in Japan there are more parameters with Zelda.

Brand new handheld Zelda outsold from OOT3D just recently.
What was the userbase when TP came out and what was the userbase when SS came out, since it's so important.

I don't see how Smash fits the comparison. Portable and home console versions are made from the ground.

Software sales are restricted by the available install base, I really don't know why you continue to ignore that fact. How can Tropical Freeze hope to sell even a quarter of the lifetime sales of Returns 3D when the install base is about nine times smaller on WiiU compared to 3DS ?.

If PS4 launched in Japan one month selling a million units and then a game launched on it the next month but only sold 100k copies compared to the last game in the series on PS3 where it sold 5 million units, would you still call it a failure or would you accept that the install base is drastically limiting the new games sales potential ?.

I'm not 'defending' WiiU. Yes I have owned one since day one (I own a PS4 aswell) but to tell you the truth I cant stand the thing, the sooner Nintendo drop it the better imo. It's a complete and utter failure in every Worldwide region.

I do find it baffling though that someone who posts so much in sales threads continues to ignore hardware install base with regards to potential software sales on the platform.

You can't sell to customers who don't exist...

PS4 launched in the US and sold a million in one month and Killzone Shadow Fall sold about as much as the last iteration on the much larger PS3 installed base...

The early installed base is supposed to be much more active in buying software and game sales don't always scale with installed base.

Shadow Fall and Knack were launch games, two of the only exclusive retail launch games which were also bundled at that.

NSMBU for WiiU was an exclusive launch game and also sold extremely well.

The PS4 is going to bomb hard during its first year. It may start selling decently when the third wave of software hits.

And I don't think Donkey Kong's problem is install base. The game looks way to similar to the Wii installment. A NSMB-2 sized mess.

God eater vita alone can shut up the incessant whining about hardware sales not being taken into account. Software sales don't scale linearly its a dumb argument

No one expected 3 million on the wiiu install base. It bombed regardless

That´s a really odd argument. God Eater and God Eater Burst sold considerably more than God Eater 2 on PSV. And that in 2013, which was PSPs 9th year on the market, a large part of the userbase would be inactive is common sense and to be expected.

I'm talking about wii fit u and you missed the point
How many copies did you personally expect Wii Fit U to sell in Japan on a 1.6 million install base ?. Didn't the last Wii Fit on the original Wii sell barely 100k ?, that fad ended long ago...

Edit -

A lot worse than I thought lol, this one -

The argument is not that games aren't going to sell less with a smaller userbase. I'm saying that a significant drop to wii fit u is not excused by hardware sales

The 3DS doesn't sell like it used to.

Poor Wii Flop U.
I agree. 3DS is already starting to become saturated in sales everywhere & will most likely not even reach GBA's total sales numbers (which was at nearly 82 million worldwide while 3DS is now only at nearly 43 million worldwide).

They need more compelling games like they did with Monster Hunter 4 or something.

And Wii U...it's just a disaster everywhere.

Shadow Fall and Knack were launch games, two of the only exclusive retail launch games which were also bundled at that.

NSMBU for WiiU was an exclusive launch game and also sold extremely well.
They weren't bundled in the US afaik.

And the overarching point remains; DK will be a sales failure in the series. Wii Fit U is a failure. They also failed/will fail to do anything to improve the hardware situation substantially. That their failure is due to being on a failed system doesn't change that they failed.

I wasn't even talking about Wii Fit U tbh, I was posting in reply to Chris' post in which he said he looked into his crystal ball and saw that Tropical Freeze was selling less than Returns 3D.

That's more than obvious since one of them has 15 million potential customers to sell to and the other has 1.6 million.

Now I agree that it should still be selling at least 250 000 in it's lifetime on WiiU (install base cannot be used to cover up complete software sales failures) but comparing TF to Returns 3D is just setting the game up for failure.

Also as NSMB U and Mario 3D World show, first party Nintendo games have incredibly strong legs so even if TF only sells 50 000 in it's first week I would still expect it to hit 250 000 before the end of the year.

The 3DS needs a more compelling price. Thing is way too expensive in today's market.

I really hope Nintendo and Sony take into account for their next handheld (I'm kinda doubtful about Sony about this) that they should go for a lower price for handheld hardware above all else.

I don't think we'll be seeing a 3rd Playstation handheld from Sony. And Nintendo has a lot more to lose here than Sony does, as Nintendo also relies on their handhelds besides their consoles for profitability.

I think its a given that Wii U software generally, and as a whole will sell less than previous generations, and against 3DS software. Not sure why anyone is arguing with that, and I would rather move the topic to what are actual sale figures.

I'm putting Donkey Kong: Expand Dong edition at 70,000 first week. If I overshoot, send me to Vallahaha.

No one's arguing against the notion that it will probably sell less (although it shouldn't be taken as a given since this is a new entry and not a port); but people dispute the notion that the terrible Wii U software sales in general excuses poor sales of a franchise entry and turns failure into success.

It's like saying well the Vita may only be selling a few tens of thousands a month in the US, but that's expected and that's pretty good considering the rise of smartphones and tablets. Look how well it's doing.
