So, how long until the 3DS's successor is announced?

That YOY decline is brutal.
Given the amount of things Nintendo is juggling, I'd be surprised if we see it announced before 2015.

You can do a pretty short announce -> release cycle these days though.

That said, now that they're also building a third platform, it might be harder to get any successor to the Wii U or 3DS out the door as quickly as I was projecting, since in theory they have even less content to go around for each box now.

Well, the question is, have Nintendo make any investment on robotic industry? If no, then this non-wearable will be remain as question.

Well, R&D teams now reorganised should help in creating content for their next handheld. And the teams working on gaming content should be quite different from those for the QOL olatform Still, now I think it's more a Q1 2016 affair for their next handheld. QOL is in 2015 probably, and I can't see Nintendo launching two major products in the same calendar year.

I think the QOL platform will be a super low-cost platform to support games like Wii Fit and other new types of experiences. It also has the freedom to try out new business models without worrying about console sales, power, etc. I think the better question is how many Wii Fit users would be willing to upgrade, and at what price. $300 is probably too high for them. Something like $99 for a dedicated QOL platform may be far more appealing to them. It's a competitive space though, so we'll see how that goes.

If Nintendo ships a ton of these QOL units that bomb as hard as these types of games have been it would be pretty devastating financially. Even if it is a low cost platform, there will be marketing, R&D costs, game/software development, and just building the thing to ship to stores. THQ got wrecked by those uPad costs, and while Nintendo has a lot more cash to throw around, they can't really afford to deplete their reserves so quickly especially when people's argument as to why they are fine is that their cash can last for years. This system also won't have the luxury of games like Mario kart, smash, and 3d mario to push units. Can you imagine Wii U sales without the types of games that had already been established?

As for the 3DS successor, I expect an early 2016 launch and if things decline really hard in the west, they'll probably aim for late 2015 and maybe 2016. A 2017 launch seems out of the question unless they want to kill their handheld division. The 3DS really just was not built to last that long.

I'd be surprised if Nintendo didn't announce a successor this year. If we don't get an announcement, I expect heavy leaks/rumours.
I'm still thinking Fall 2015 or Early 2016 is a possibility, but I'm not sure if they will have enough content ready to announce 1.5 years early like they normally do.

Both Microsoft and Sony went same year this time around so they would have more to show.

Admittedly a handheld game takes a lot less resources, but that is still significantly more than Nintendo had to use per 3DS game assuming they're at least aiming marginally above the Vita.

Well you see the good thing is Nintendo is probably not greenlighting many more Wii U games if any at all, so they can send their console teams that would have started work on new Wii U games to a 3DS successor. EAD Tokyo, Retro, and all the developers who released 3DS games last year could move to the successor. The other platform will just have the teams that would have been making games like Nintendogs,Brain Training, Wii Fit, and Wii Sports on it.

Edit: Oh the standalone Fit Meter that lets one keep using the trial software.I suppose one can envisage it selling gangbusters unnoticed by all if they want. The evident reality is still the same, people are not buying Wii Us for Wii Fit U.

Really? That's what you got from what I said?

I could honestly copy and paste what I said in reply to this.

edit: which is, I was curious how much it sold, know it didn't sell well, and had a main point that it is 3 month old news. Not everything is about two sides arguing.

Nintendo did say they plan to focus on 3DS this year, so maybe we'll see more games to prevent further declines.

The main issue I see is that they still have a lot of Wii U games in development.

Even if they're at outsourcing teams, those are still people who aren't getting contracted to work on the next handheld.

We will most likely see the same strategy used for Twilight Princess - released on both platforms (Wii U and next-gen offering).

I agree. IMO, Nintendo should be able to easily bring out a handheld that will run circles around PS Vita in graphics & power at a lower cost, considering that mobile technology has been advancing at a much faster rate than ever before.

I was looking at JapanLTDRank and saw this. I was mostly surprised by that Download number (where is that # from)? If so, Does that mean the expansion actually sold about 130K copies? That means that a bit over 1/5 of the DQX owners actually upgraded to Wii U. Interesting. It seems about the same amount bought the upgrade on Wii (It was like 117K right?).

Sonic Boom won't be released in Japan. I'm sure it'd sell poorly, considering how Lost World did, but that's gotta blow.

This sounds about right. Iwata said that the 3DS being over 40M they can now really start making profits from it so I think they'd want at least two years to do that.

I also think that the next console could be released in 2018 depending on what kind of level the Wii U can recover to. This will give them more time to better differentiate it from the Wii. The PS4/Xbone would be 5 years old and it would likely give Nintendo a 2 year headstart rather than the one they had this time.

Stop being so dumb, Raist. The 975 is the actual typo.

They should have done this with Skyward Sword.
They should have done it with a number of games. Kirby: return to Neverland, SMG2, etc. Any late wii game should have been crossed gen. People would have bought cross gen stuff.

They're currently sitting on nearly $2B in inventory that has yet to be impaired and is likely largely Wii Us iirc. If they manufacture large quantities of another device that bombs then it would be pretty bad.

You said it was a "made up failure" as we don't know how much it's sold in its other configuration and it has been on sale for a while.

To which the response is still: no, it's a very real failure. It was a failure when released months ago, it's a failure now, as the system is still selling abysmally and the number of unit sales are low and a massive collapse from the past iterations.

[PSP] Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom) {2010.12.01} - 2.146.467 / 4.502.446
[PSP] Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP the Best) (Capcom) {2011.09.22} - 15.113 / 324.206

Total - 4.826.665

[3DS] Monster Hunter 4 (Capcom) {2013.09.14} - 1.875.115 / 3.389.957
[3DS] Monster Hunter 4 - Digital Sales (Capcom) {2013.09.14} - 278.487 (Sep, Oct, and Dec - missing Nov)
Total - 3.668.444

Looks like X & Y sales are above R / S by a bit (not sure for how long), but below everything else. I think it'll hit 5m though, unless it's as front-ended as B/W.

Monster Hunter 4 seems to be slowing down. That's probably b/c of the MH4U announcement.

Moving on today big news. Among other things, looks like Sonic Boom is not coming to Japan. Man, Lost World bombed so bad it killed Sonic.

Well based on what they are saying, I think this was always meant only for the West, so Lost World likely had nothing to do with it...

Lost World sold like 2000 units on Wii U, so that's really not surprising. And frankly, that's not big news.

The next step for the franchise should be to not release in any other countries either

The main issue I see is that they still have a lot of Wii U games in development.

Even if they're at outsourcing teams, those are still people who aren't getting contracted to work on the next handheld.

Well for Wii U we really have no idea if SMTxFE or Yoshi WIi U is still in development. Namco is contracted on Smash Bros. Retro is finished with fucking Donkey Kong.EAD will finish up Mario Kart soon. Really the only internal team that we know is busy on a Wii U game is Monolith. For Nintendo's major properties or could be for a future handheld, NSMB, MK, 3D Mario, DK, Pokemon, and Animal Crossing are all free or soon to be free to work start work on a successor assuming they don't move to more Wii U games. Now if we start getting word on a lot of these teams working on new Wii U or even new 3DS games than they probably aren't launch within the next 2 years.

Some speculation but I think Retro will have had a small team working on WiiU Metroid and now DKC is finished they will all pile on to that aiming for a late 2015 / Spring 2016 release. In terms of EAD, I think Tokyo will be working on Galaxy 3, Group 2 will be working on a WiiU Animal Crossing, Group 3 are already working on WiiU Zelda, Group 5 are working on Yoshi's Yarn and of course Monolith are working on X. Then there is Sakurai / Namco with Smash and Platinum with Bayo 2 and maybe W-102 from Kamiya if Nintendo want to foot the financial loss again.

Of course there could be multiple projects going on in each Group esp smaller 3DS projects, have Nintendo ever released developer numbers for their studios ?.

As much as some people want it (myself included) I don't think there is anyway Nintendo will drop WiiU and move onto their next console before 2016 at the earliest. It's incredibly sad that their amazing first party games will be extremely limited by the unappealing consoles tiny install base.

To try and keep this more on topic, is Metroid a big franchise in Japan ?.

People setting themselves up for Galaxy 3 are going to be disappointed. Also Good Feel is making Yoshi Yarn. Nintendo certainly won't be ending the system anytime soon, but I highly doubt they invest a lot of money into surefire bombs like a Wii U Metroid would be.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I expect many games that bombed on WiiU to get their 2nd chance on a 3DS succesor - they will probably go port heavy in the first year just to have content and recoup some of theit costs. Pikmin, Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong TF etc. at least thats what i would do.

Is Terraria released physically in jpn?

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Good news for PS4: Team Ninja is developing a game for the platform. They're not big seller, and it's still Tecmo Koei, but at least it's something.

Bad news for PS4: Deep Down delayed till Summer, if not a little beyond Summer.

What's the PS4 lineup after FFXIV comes out?
