Famitsu comparison

[N64] Paper Mario (Nintendo) - 55.725 / 174.046 ( released on August 11th, 2000)
[GCN] Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo) - 59.427 / 197.177
(released on July, 22nd 2004)
[WII] Super Paper Mario (Nintendo) - 83.448 / 239.503 (released on April, 19th 2007)
[3DS] Paper Mario: Sticker Star (Nintendo) - 79.063 / 209.072

Thanks - looks to be a good week, then. Interesting that MC and Famitsu have such a large gap in numbers, though.

ALSO, I think it's time to start admitting that Vita is dead. 14K in December is not the sales of a healthy platform. When your competitor can outsell your year-to-date in two weeks, you've lost the game in a fundamental way.

Do sales usually get even higher until the New Year, or is this usually a plateau? Can 3DS reach 10 million LTD, or impossible?
Looking at last year's numbers, it seems impossible. 3DS will do a bit more next week (between 400 and 500K), but then drop to around 150K on the last week of the year.

Then the first week after New Year sales go up a bit. After that first week of 2013 there is a chance for 10 Million.

Nirolak just said next week has always been historically bigger than this one... so what you claim to be incredible is pretty much a given, isn't it?
Well I wouldn't assume anything, but yes.

And the whole year. PSP YTD is around 10% higher than Vita YTD
I was trying to find a quick list of weekly sales for both, thanks.

Just PR talk.

They didn't do anything worth mentioning in Japan for this holiday to warrant any sort of bump in sales.

No price cut, no attractive bundles, nothing worth mentioning in terms of game releases.

Can't blame them either, whatever they would have done would have just been overshadowed by the continued rise of the 3DS and the launch of the WiiU.

I'm looking to next year for them to start making moves with the Vita.
its already too late for them to make moves, and if say they make a move next year, when exactly will that happen? E3? TGS? they can't even continue their vita heaven because they got nothing. nothing that will make vita on fire on a non holiday season.

360 was doing better its second holiday season.

Wii second week was 109K (Famitsu) or 85K (MC). Launch aligned LTD are similar for MC (436K), but Famitsu has Wii higher (481K). This was the severely supply constrained Wii, however.
Thanks for those. Really good for WiiU then.
Also whilst supply constrained is true, its a valid issue for Nintendo at the time leading to lower sales. Fact is the WiiU is selling on par with the Wii; sales wise this is nothing but good.

6.) Xbox 360 - 17,168 | 35,343 | 160,014 | 230,580
Holy shit...And was that was 2006 right? So...doing better in the face of a double console launch...
I fear for the post-New Year Vita numbers.

COD, AC and NFS:MW was there content and they didnt do much. Cant wait to see what he comes out with after christmas!!
NFS: MW bugs me because the Wii U version was pushed back while Vita got it, Vita has been getting the software but people are still using it as the issue. I don't think its a software problem alone anymore.

Ugh, these numbers don't bode well for future Vita software. I can't imagine that is going to accelerate the release of FFX HD on Vita, if at all.
Three options here;

1) PS3 version only, with the option of running it on Vita
2) Scrap the Vita version, lose the HD, port it to 3DS
3) PS3 and Wii U. (Which is the least likely option lol)

Didn't Iwata apologize for the shortage of the deluxe Wii Us in the recent ND? I think Wii U is quite supply restrained as well; even the basic model is selling for over 30k on Amazon

If I was developing a Vita game, there'd be a meeting to discuss it tomorrow morning at 8:30 to announce the project was canceling or going multi-platform.
Kinda feel bad for the Vita, honestly. It's a good piece of kit. I don't own one, but I don't normally own hardware that I don't have the need to purchase software from (I know, I know... that's why... but it's pretty nice hardware)

At least, the Wii U everyone wants is supply constrained. They should have just released the premium set. It's what everyone wants even if it makes the base price higher.

Franchise fatigue?
Nah, the problem for NSMB U is user base at this point. As it grows, it's sales will continue. There's a hard cap at 438k currently.

Good numbers for 3DS, but are people forgetting that the whole market is shrinking and 3DS is not able to fill the gap left by PSV?
unfortuneately true. The psp + nds market was so much bigger than 3ds + vita, that's real story here, and one that bodes ill for handhelds. Oh well, time marches on, all things chage, yadda yadda.

What is supposed to be the Vita's big holiday title? If it doesn't have one, that just goes to show how much Sony cares about the Vita.
Not only does it not have a big holiday title, it doesn't have any title full stop.

The AKB game in January is the next hope.
Gran Turismo Vita will bring some decent acceleration.
Wait for 2017?

COD, AC, LBP and NFS MW on the top of my head. i didn't notice their japanese holiday titles given that nothing charted. but those titles are 'everything they've got' for this holiday season.

Believe it or not, most Japanese handheld developers are perfectly fine with selling sub-100k, just look how much games that are not Mario/Pokemon/S-E RPG sell. Persona 4 Golden performance shows Vita can become a niche handheld for more hardcore games, which would be fine with me. You can be sure it's much more likely for Sony to localize niche games than it is for Nintendo.

If I was developing a Vita game, there'd be a meeting to discuss it tomorrow morning at 8:30 to announce the project was canceling or going multi-platform.
So instead of making a niche game and selling it ~30k @6000JPY you will make it for PS3, spend more money, and sell as PSN release ~15k@2000JPY (bear in mind being software starved will make people buy more software for the Vita)?

Yeah, I just think the HW is released at a wrong time, wrong price;

I finally bought a PSP slim this summer, but I am having a thorough blast with both the games and the hardware; I think they should have had aimed at a cheaper PSV with UMD support, and personally I would have had definitely bought that instead of PSP.

That's correct. It was a problem with software. ACIII Vita, NFS: MW Vita, Madden 13 Vita, lots of titles popular in Japan, and it still fails to sell. It's no longer dealing with post launch drought. It's dealing with inertia.

we can hope.

Not sure why so many are gleeful about vita numbers given 3ds region lock and ninty's dislike of localization costs.

I've bee saying its the PSP's fault but no one is listening :p
If PSP sold 0 and all those sales went to vita, PSV's sales still wouldn't be anything to write home about in week 50.

Seriously, looking at those numbers one has to come to the conclusion that SCE has made deals with NB and TK in order for them to port their games to vita. One also has to conclude that no sane 3rd party will develop a vita exclusive game unless Sony pays for it. Given the lack of sony owned IPs that are catered to the JP market and their precarious financial situation where they can't really explain moneyhatting a franchise, there's not a whole lot they can do. Sony could always liquidize other assets and buy a major share in a major 3rd party developer that owns major JP centric IPs, but regardless, vita is a failure, no ifs ands or maybes about it. Will it outsell the dreamcast or gamecube in Japan? Or even the 360? I have my doubts.

On the other HW:

- Great numbers for PS3 and PSP. PS3 can sell for at least 2-3 more years with an aggressive price drop (14999Y to 19999Y) and sharing some games with WiiU, it'll pass 10 million LTD in sales. PSP will crawl past 20 million and it'll probably sell in the double digits in week 50 next year as well. They can still drop the price to 9999Y
- WiiU numbers are great for week 2. JP is really the only region where WiiU numbers are encouraging
- Wii is dying, last real Christmas as I see Nintendo killing it next year
- 3DS is beast mode, Nintendo really got the JP market with it
