I wonder if Super Mario 3D Land can hit 2 million in the next month.
It'll definitely get a big bump the next few weeks, and it might stay relatively stable after that.

This is not in any way to suggest a PS3 style recovery in Japan is likely, or even possible, and I fully acknowledge there are significant factors making that nearly impossible, but if you project out Wii U sales the next 3 weeks, they could be about 150K behind PS3 after its second full holiday*

I guess my only real point is that the first year Wii U sales, while terrible, aren't quite as bad in Japan as elsewhere and I think a GCN LTD is very achievable.

*The comparison isn't exact week to week because PS3 launched earlier in the year
I think it's obvious the holiday season is playing a large role in the improved WiiU hardware sales but I genuinely think those bundles and the release of Mario World has played a major role. We shall see from the second half of Jan onwards if that's the case.

What were the GameCube lifetime sales in Japan ?.

I wonder what Nintendo would be happy with in terms of weekly WiiU sales once the holidays are over, 25k per week ? which works out at around 1.5 million per year including a few weeks holiday bump and 9 million lifetime sales over six years.

I wonder how much the PS4's release next year is weighing down hardware sales in japan right now. There's got to be a bunch of people holding out for the release, right?

That Wii U ad has Aya Ueto :3

All things considered, don´t you guys think Lightning Returns did well for itself? It´s almost 365-390k, it will end up selling at least 400k LTD. This isn´t that big of a drop in comparison to FFXIII-2 (didn´t it sell around 500 or 600k?). First week it opened at around 280k but it seems it has some legs.

What do you guys think?

[3DS] Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon <ACT> (Nintendo) {2013.03.20} (¥4.800) - 15.051 / 958.510

Nintendo says they have already sold one million, probably including digital, or shipped.

The PS4 doesn't have that much in the immediate future for Japanese gamers, unlike the West where there's big titles very frequently and a heavy commitment from just about every major publisher.

I suspect it's not holding down hardware sales that much overall.

I highly doubt price is the 3DS's issue.
It's as cheap as the cheapest DS has been.
A cheaper SKU will probably help, but it's definitely clear that the market has changed.

It can still get PSP numbers, but won't come close to DS.

I don't expect it to only sell 6000 units to note. I just picked those two sample points to show the range.
I think it's worth noting that the audience picking up the Wii U right now will probably not help the performance of Hyrule Warriors in terms of sales. I doubt they are interested much in Musou games.

This is a bit out of date, but it fluctuates a lot depending on series, time period, and platform: http://garaph.info/gamesearch.php?titleenglish=warriors&stte=1&titlejapanese=&platform=&stpl=0&publisher=&stpu=0&date1=&date2=&std=&price1=&price2=&sltd1=&sltd2=&gameid=&orderby=&res1=&res2=&opt=1

Back in the PS2 era the games sometimes topped one million.

The only one on the Wii U there is at 6000 units.
Hokuto Muso 2 was released on Wii U too, right?

Hyrule Warriors seems like an odd collaboration from a business standpoint. The Muso franchise is one heavily steeped in PlayStation fandom. Are they going to buy a Wii U for a crossover with a franchise they hardly know? Are existing Wii U owners going to buy a Zelda themed Dynasty Warriors when they've barely bought the Zelda, and Warriors games on Wii U?*

*that's a trio of ports

Didn't the 3DS set record sales last yr in Japan? It may be down compared to last yr but the system is still selling well.

I dunno, the Japanese Market isn't that into the NBA 2K, Madden, Battlefield /CoD or Ass Creed franchises. some of them are successful in Japan, but not system sellers. Nothing really has been announced for the Japanese Market other than FF XV that will really make the Japanese save up money for one.

It's selling amazingly well, nearing on 5M is no small feat but still there is decline. It's hard to keep expanding the audience when you've lost quite a bit of the DS base.

XIII-2 sold 800K or so
LR did ok, but it's understandable since it's a spinoff of a unwarranted sequel. so 400K is decent for what it is (and I did my part to help out that number)

I expect FFX/X-2 HD to outsell it

Ah cool, thanks. Great game and so deserving of the success. Really took off everywhere.
It has that universal appeal. It made me think about the other thread where someone was asking what AAA game would interest people in the west. I think something in this same style (not necessarily Luigi's Mansion 3) with a higher budget could work pretty well for the Wii U.

Unfortunately I don't think Nintendo would take such a risk without applying one of their popular mascots on it. Still, Luigi's Mansion has a lot of potential -- in the 3DS game you can see areas where it was being held back by the hardware so I would be up for a LM3 WiiU. Certainly much moreso than a simple HD upport which has been rumoured for a while now.

The Wii U actually seems to be beating my expectations at least. Nice to see at least some good news for it =). I personally think a console going from the terrible levels it was selling at, to actually slightly better than the GameCube for the same holiday period is actually a good sign for its prospects in Japan. That hopefully will result in a slightly better baseline come January. In all honesty what did the Wii U have last January? I'm pretty sure it was nothing too, right? Was there anything in February there either? Initially the new Wii U owners already have two games (NSMBU + Wii Party U). A good portion of Wii U owners are buying 3d World (I wonder how many of the new folks are buying it? I kind of assume a decent portion). I wonder what titles they might purchase after that? Or would they be satisfied with those for a really long time?

Good for Puzzles & Dragons, but unfortunately it didn't seem to increase the 3DS baseline too much (I suspect it was more the holiday bump for the 3DS).

Dragon Quest X completely fell off the charts, like entirely. That's at least a 90% drop for the Wii and Wii U versions right?

So in Japan, the Wii U's next titles are Puyo Puyo Feb 6 and DKC: TF 2/13 right? Actually when is Wii Fit physically releasing there?

3DS being significantly down compared to last year isn't great. It's not hit its full three year point and the yearly declines are happening. If anything, it should be increasing at this point. So many big hitters are out already, too.

Actually it could be selling like Vita, murdered by smartphones and tablets. Yet Nintendo manages to find a massive audience despite this disruptive competition. Clearly things could have gone worse for them.

I still think 3ds xl releasing last year and no remodel this year got a lot of double dippers that this year didn't see. I don't think 2ds will be a model people buy to replace their current ones like with xl over original, but it should still have a positive effect on next year's numbers. So along with a few large hits, I think it is possible to get 3ds over 5m again.

This year isn't completely done with 3ds needing to sell around 550k in 2 weeks, it's possible... But last year it wouldn't even be a question.

Also it's good to see Wii U possibly sneak by PS3's YTD, considering it was selling below 3k just a couple months ago.

It isn't going to come close to a PS3 revival, but I think this month is showing there is still interest in the platform.
Well even the Vita has interest lol. Right now its performing just like the GCN with the holiday bumps albeit larger ones and the inevitable depression during January.

Aren't mousu games still pretty popular in Japan? You're usually reasonably cynical but this seems pretty far off
Depends on what franchises they include. Zelda isn't really that popular on consoles for some reason in Japan (they prefer handheld zeldas how weird).

All I look for are the Vita numbers - happy to see that it's still doing well.
That is nowhere near well.

i didn't even notice that super mario 3d world is on the brink of outselling gran turismo 6.

......huh.
GT6 flopped in Japan it seems.

The Legend of Zelda X Dinasty Warriors doesn't look like a winning team. Console The Legend of Zelda franchise is at an all-time low in Japan and the last 2 Musou titles for Wii U barely sold 50.000 units combined (and they still haven't sold their initial shipment). The only mild success for a Musou game on a Nintendo system was Samurai Warriors 3 which at least sold 300.000 units, although it didn't meet publisher's expectations.

Code:

Good sales for Wii U. Super Mario 3D World is in a better position to clear 500k as well.

Gamecube sales were shit. Around 4M LTD. I think that 9M is extremely optimistic for the Wii U, even if these are good holiday results. Nintendo home console sales have been frontloaded in Japan for almost 20 years. Wii U won't get the PS3's 7-8 years on the market to crawl towards 9-10M. The Wii, which had the best home console sales of all time for awhile, failed to make it to 13M.

EDIT: Top put things in further context, Wii was at 9.6M LTD by the end of 2009, just over 3 years from launch. It only managed a little over 3M units since then. PS3 was sitting at ~4.5M LTD at the end of 2009, and has since sold an additional 5M units.

GT6 flopped in Japan it seems.
i don't get how sony could mishandle their biggest franchise like that. its popularity's been sliding ever since the first game, but at least the first four sold over a million each. i guess gt5 did too if you combine all the specs and prologues and best versions.

although it could just be a one-off.

They haven't mishandled the IP. The Ip still sells 10 million+, GT5 (if prologue is included) is the second best selling iteration. What is evident is the massive decline of the series in Japan due to the market just disappearing. It seems Japan is no longer into sim racers or even racing (Ridge racer decline).

Maybe GT7 will invigorate sales but right now I have zero faith it will do such a thing.

I know the WIi U numbers aren't mind blowing or anything, but as a fan it is nice to know that there are 70,000 more Wii Us out in homes for people to enjoy!
