I think everyone realizes it's a combination of saturation & next gen anticipation...though Sony can't be happy at the lack of interest GT6 generated.

This is great news for for the WiiU and hopefully Nintendo will keep the foot on the gas through January and February. This is where the Virtual Console (that people actually want) comes in handy, to basically fill in the gaps between major retail releases.

Of all the mess ups Nintendo have made with WiiU, the Virtual Console is perhaps the most baffling. When the console was struggling esp in the first half of 2013 from a lack of software, N64 and Gamecube games with off screen support would have been a Godsend to many owners. We're now into late December and there is still no word on support for those consoles aswell as a ton of classic NES and SNES games still missing. I have £100 ready to go for classic N64 / Gamecube games and I bet a lot of other people would buy a lot of titles with off screen play. Sometimes it seems like Nintendo doesn't like money...

I still would like know to their thinking on, not allowing us to control Wii games strictly using the gamepad. I know they can do it, they're choosing not to. Yeah! VC angers me the most, such wasted potential. One of the Wii's biggest selling point not being utilized here.

Virtual Console is such a missed opportunity for Nintendo. I've heard plenty of gamers say they would honestly buy a Nintendo console just for that service if it were more robust. There are some local retro game shops that do huge business selling older consoles or hardware clones to people with games triple the price they'd be on Wii VC.

For a company that strives on its legacy titles it's bizarre how little they care about this.

The Virtual Console is a mess for Nintendo right now. Just today, my brother remarked he went to the 3DS eShop to impulse buy Super Mario World but didn't realize that SNES games weren't up. It almost feels like they just forgot about it.

GC managed 100k weekly in holidays 2003, seems like most of you forgot that...

Plenty of people have discussed it and Aqua even made a comparison. Also wouldn't 2003 be more comparable to next year anyway? I think it was put better earlier in the thread, At this point it;s the difference between hitting Dreamcast numbers or Gamecube numbers.

without software Wii U can't go on so far, next big release is planned in middle February, of course if DK is enough strong, and being Smash Bros a multi with 3DS was not a wise decision in my opinion, Smash was always a... smash hit (lol) on Nintendo home, being multi might let Wii U version being cannibalized by 3DS one

Mario Kart 8 is coming... in April, 4 months with just DK means 10k weekly is likely around the corner

Sony really should just get 3rd parties to do some ports PS3 games to tide PS4 over for a while. Also games like KH HD 2.5 should come out on both.

Also thanks for the lists guys. The 3DS has a decent lineup, but it's going to have another decent decline this year. Has there ever been a time when a system peaked in its 2nd year?

I kind of think the HD KH and FF ports should both appear on PS4. I think selling them on the PS3 in NA late next year (in KH's case) doesn't make a ton of sense. And are they not going to do FFXII? They certainly shouldn't do it on PS3...it will be a 2015 release in NA!

2.5 on the PS4 wouldn't make any sense unless 1.5 was coming to it as well and knowing SE they'll probably just make a new re-release in a few years for the PS4.

Why? It's not like you have to have both to enjoy the games and 2.5 contains the first game in the series anyway.

But then they wouldn't be able to make the "Definitive Edition" or any "Ultra HD" remakes later on if they do that!

Its kinda hard to get new people into the series in anticipation of KH3 with only KH2 and BBS which both need you to play games in 1.5 to make sense.

I'm expecting another release for both the PS4 and Xbox One or something unless SE just decides to go Gaikai on the PS4.

Just checked some sales data to see what will happen the next couple of weeks.

Usually, the biggest days of the year are December 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. Usually this days are located in week 51, and that's why is the biggest week in the year. But this year the biggest days are split between week 51 and 52.

So I checked a year with the same distribution of days, and that was 2002 (more than 10 years ago). The sales that time were like this (Famitsu numbers):

Week 51 2002 {16.12.2002 - 22.12.2002}

GBA - 303.834
PS2 - 157.759
GC - 66.410
XB - 8.176

Week 52 2002 {23.12.2002 - 29.12.2002}

GBA - 262.503
PS2 - 152.833
GC - 60.290
XB - 5.293

Week 1 2003 {30.12.2002 - 05.01.2003}

GBA - 316.675
PS2 - 193.758
GC - 71.945
XB - 9.063

So, it seems next week we'll face a smaller decline compared to other years, just because day 23rd and 24th are in week 52, and these are the busiest days.
But then on New Year Eve, Sales will go up, if it follows the same trend.

So maybe we can see a bigger week than this.

For all those folks saying the Wii U is having a GameCube like holiday and that's expected, isn't it rather surprising to get these type of holiday numbers with so few software titles? There seemed to be far more titles in the GameCube's early life, and the GC already had a system seller in Smash essentially since launch. Considering essentially the complete lack of interest for a long time for the Wii U (until the bundles essentially), isn't this somewhat surprising?

I completely agree with the hesitation going into January with regards to sales, but I just wanted to make the point above.

So Week 1 will potentially be bigger than 51? Wow that's great. So the Wii U could have another 100K week, maybe two if next weeks decline isn't that bad.

Could be. This year, week 51 is not as big as other years because day 23rd and 24th are in week 52. That means week 52 will be bigger than other years (smaller decline) and chances to week 1 to beat week 51 might be there.

Was the GameCube supply constrained in 2003 or did something else happen for it to go up in week 52 (like a 53 week year)?

That is related at what I was saying in my prior post about the days and the possibility of a bigger week 1.

On year 2003 week 52 included the days 22nd, 23rd and 24th of December. The busiest days of the year. That's why beat week 51. I think the same happens in year 2008. Can't check now because I'm not home and I'm using the Mobile (also double post for that, sorry).

I'm curious to see the level of 3DS sales in 2014. I began to believe the final sales for it will be bigger, but closer to the PSP than I thought.

Looks like the WiiU will get two more >100k weeks before the holidays are over. The WiiU/PS3 gap will be very wide by then.

Wow the 3ds is coming up on 3 years in 2 months. Time really has flown

Nobody seemed to notice the ps3 has been selling what it has with all the focus on wiiu

No one cares about the PS3's sales since its 7 years old lol. Its on its way out yet Japan refuses to believe this and keeps putting more games on it :(

I'm curious to see the level of 3DS sales in 2014. I began to believe the final sales for it will be bigger, but closer to the PSP than I thought.

21-22 million is my guess which is very close to the PSP's LTD iirc. The handheld market has shrunk severely it seems.

PS3 yearly sales

2006 457,558
2007 1,184,118
2008 980,797
2009 1,764,532
2010 1,586,122
2011 1,548,895
2012 1,223,699
2013 819,269 + next week

wasn't until 2009 that sales took off, even it couldn't manage 2 million in a year.
PS4 is going to follow a similar solid-but-unspectacular trajectory in Japan imo.

I think people predicting PS4 will sell a million in its first month and pass Wii U LTD by the end of 2014 will be dissapointed. If anything PS4 Japanese line up for the first year is worse than PS3's.
