For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Tsutaya?
Tsutaya is a major retailer with 1,440 retail stores (612 that sell new games) all across Japan.

What is Comgnet?
Comgnet is the website for the retailer "COMG!" that has 17 retail stores across the Niigata Prefecture in Japan.

Why post these rankings?
They are released three days before Media Create + Famitsu + Dengeki give us nationwide sales, so we get a general indication of how well the games will perform relative to their competition.

How accurate is Tsutaya compared to nationwide retail tracking services?
It's large enough that it gives a very probable indication of future sales rankings, but it's not large enough to be definitive.

How accurate were Tsutaya's rankings last week?

Interesting rankings. So FFX/X-2 for PS3 is definitely tracking quite higher than the Vita version, although the latter one still seems to be doing good numbers overall.

Are there first week sales for other FF re-releases and for other Zelda handheld titles?

Comgnet and Tsutaya usually tend to be quite similar. Is there a reason why this week they differ so much?

Neat. Thanks. So ALBW has a very good chance of opening better than OoT.

Also, Skyward Sword is for the Wii.

aren't points lower across the board these days though?
so ALBW might end up closer to the DS games
(Japan pls, those are the worst ones)

So.... is X/X-2 HD RE going to out sell Lightning Returns? If so that would be quite a laugh?

Glad that Gundam Musou seems to be doing very well on Vita, it looks gorgeous and has almost no slowdown. ;_;

How big is Hamatora in Japan? http://www.cs.furyu.jp/hamatora/

3DS this summer.

And I'm expecting a Senran Kagura 2 Sink on 3DS. Just sayin' ;-)

You probably saw that scan mentioned on the other thread. If you found it, PM.
It's especially because I want to see if it can be real or not: it can't be Famitsu since this week it won't come out, and this is an Holiday week in Japan, so...

I have no sauce for the boobies (plus haven't seen any scan).

The Hamatora is legit though. I nearly wrote it up as Hamtaro. Need. Sleep.

Hino's plan for 2014
http://kotaku.com/more-2014-resolutions-from-japanese-game-developers-1490799636
Akihiro Hino – Level-5

Key phrase: Interpersonal connections

Resolution: At present, it is impossible to develop an online game or smartphone game without considering other players. I believe that taking into account interpersonal connectivity when developing games will become even more important in the future. For 2014, I'd like to start by moving forward with smartphone games. I'm determined to succeed. I believe that this is just as important now as it was when Level-5 first became a publisher. I want try new things and strive ahead, like when I first started out.

there is more on the article.

interpersonal connection...what about let me connect with Fantasy life with a western release?

The more u said this, the more I wanted to cry here. T_T Level-5 had so many great games that I believe many fans would love to play them.

Inazuma series, Danball Senki series, Fantasy Life, etc.(Especially Fantasy Life here to get that animal crossing market.)

The same I also can said to Konami on how they choose not to bring Tongari Boushi game here.T_T

Well that will hopefully push Mario Kart 8 above 100k units sold.

I don't think a march release for MK8 is likely, at all. And besides, MK8 is pretty much guaranteed to reach 100k in its first week, since Super Mario 3D World did as much, and it's from a less popular series.

While I have reservations about Mario Kart's sales potential I'd be astonished if it did worse than 3D World especially given it's coming out later.

That said if it was coming in March, I kind of agree that it would have a date already.

I realize this topic is a bit difficult for Nintendo though since they can't announce it on one side of the fiscal year wall or the other without impacting their expectations for that fiscal year, so it's possible they'll announce a March date a bit later than normal if they're sure they'll make it.

Looks like we can expect a spike in sales in late-march... I wonder what the effect will be on VG and console sales. Guess it's good news for whichever games come out in late march!

It's going to be interesting. March is already usually crowded with releases due to companies wanting them to drop before the fiscal year ends, I wonder if more will try to take advantage of this.

Biggest releases currently scheduled for March:

Soul Sacrifice Delta
Project Diva F 2nd
Dark Souls II
J Stars Victory Vs.
Samurai Warriors 4
Mario Party Island Tour
Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes

Although, to be honest, a 3% difference in a game price is almost irrelevant. Even for a PS4 the difference is like $10. I don't know if people in general will care about this. I expect pictures on 2ch from some crazy otaku that went on a buying spree, though.

Do we know if Dengeki will release normal time next week? I haven't found any note about that yet.

I haven't see any warning, but what they have done in the past is take a week off and publish both weeks in the next regular update. Although, with this new format they are doing I don't know if things will change.

That's actually kind of when I'd expect them to announce it, since they presumably would want to adjust the Wii U at least a little bit based on whether Mario Kart 8 is coming out in that quarter or not.

That said the reason I think they might release it after March is that this is their only real chance at changing the sales baseline for the Wii U for at least the first half of the year, so making sure it's excellent is probably their top priority.

Iwata is fighting for the future of the Wii U. The more leverage Iwata can use to convince investors that the console has a sufficient lineup for 2014, the more successful he is at trying to ward off significant change to the Company. I believe Mario Kart will release after March for that reason...it gives more credence to a proposed FY3/2015 corporate strategy.

They can say 'Unfortunately, Mario Kart needs further work before it's ready, so it won't be releasing this financial year. As a consequence, we are reducing our forecast of Wii Us sold this year from 9 million to 3 million,'

Yup that is what I am thinking. This fiscal year is a lost cause.

Im really, really curious what the lineup for Wii U was supposed to be since release. After Reggie did that recent interview stating how games like Pikmin 3 were supposed to be released early this year, delays seem to be out the bazoo. They might as well just concentrate on next fiscal where the "delayed" games will actually be released

That makes sense. This way they can at least sit in the January meeting and try to argue that next year looks promising for notable sales increases going into the next fiscal year.

However, the one place for backfire I see here is that Mario Kart will presumably be out before the next shareholder meeting, so if it doesn't raise sales notably by then, they still have to contend with a bunch of unhappy shareholders at that thing.

They don't really have much choice either way however, so pushing for what looks like a solid next fiscal year remains the best option.

Pretty much guaranteed the date will be announced during a Nintendo Direct, the first one of the year. Probably January, because in retrospect, there was only 1 Wii U game announcement during the December one (Dr Luigi and Nes Remix don't count, because I'm talking retail titles only = those who can increase sales), and some games like Bayo2 and X were MIA.

Also, there's still that Steel Diver F2P game, and I can totally see them announcing it right before the investor meeting, in order to say 'hey, look, we're doing F2P stuff too!'. I don't see Iwata NOT taking about it, since he's already talked about F2P stuff in a past meeting and hasn't released a true F2P yet.

So yeah, I'm betting a on ND right before the meeting, with at least Steel Diver and MK8 release date.

Oh, I guess the increase won't be significant then.

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
That makes sense. This way they can at least sit in the January meeting and try to argue that next year looks promising for notable sales increases going into the next fiscal year.

However, the one place for backfire I see here is that Mario Kart will presumably be out before the next shareholder meeting, so if it doesn't raise sales notably by then, they still have to contend with a bunch of unhappy shareholders at that thing.

They don't really have much choice either way however, so pushing for what looks like a solid next fiscal year remains the best option.

or they can continue delaying it until the release of the nextgen console, making of it what they did with Twilight Princess, justifying the low Wii U sales for the entire life of the product ;p

I would put a large sum of money on MK8 being released before the second week of March, Iwata will definitely want that hardware bump to get him a bit closer to his 9 million target. He will also want another large titles percentage boost of console sales to talk about during that meeting - "MK8 has seen WiiU hardware sales rise by 500% in recent weeks" ect.

I wonder what the console is on now in terms of WW Lifetime sales, it was what 3.9 million in late October right ?, maybe 5.5 million by the end of Jan Worldwide depending on the Dec NPD. Maybe another million from MK8 Worldwide if there is another $50 price cut / good advertising.

The real worry for Nintendo is that by the end of April 2014 WiiU will be on 7 million units sold Worldwide at the very most and they will have already blown NSMB, 3D Mario, Mario Kart 8, DKC, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, Wii Party U and Wii Sports HD to try and generate hardware sales. They have also price cut the console by $50 in America and put together several bundles for Japan. Even if Smash and Zelda provide another million sales Worldwide each that still leaves the console on sub 10 million sales...

They are going to be so far off the hardware target that a couple of weeks of an MK bump is not going to make a huge difference to how investor view this financial year for the platform.

Good point but I suppose it all depends on what they plan on doing to support the release of Kart. Another $50 price cut for America ?, a MK8 bundle ?. Releasing the game alongside the current bundles at their current price won't do much to help the console IMO.

I also wonder if four weeks of good Holiday sales in Japan will sway Iwata in thinking the console has turned around as he said they will review the consoles future after the Holidays.

With Mario Kart doesn't have a release date, is that mean the game still not ready for March release? If they do announced it, what can we expect from the game then?

considering donkey kong is in february, i wouldn't expect mario kart until april or may at the earliest. it's still a 'spring' title so that's probably when we'll see it. smash bros. will probably be a year-end thing. i get the feeling hyrule warriors may be this year's stopgap before the ead zelda. i get the feeling zelda's a 2015 title.

I thought it was a Spring title and so April/May.

The conversation above makes me wonder what shit would happened if Iwata really desperate to push Mario Kart for march release. Donkey Kong is the only Wii U new release before fiscal year right? How popular is it in Japan?

DK 64 did 850k

The rest did 200-400k

then DKCR on Wii came out and did 900k+

Since its on the WiiU I guess we can expect 400k-500k.

January 29th, 2014 - Investor meeting

Iwata: "Hello to everyone, and welcome to"
*someone throws a Wii U Pad to the stage
Investors: "We want your head, Iwata! Nothing, nothing changed! NOTHING! OUR SHARES...WE WANT YOUR HEADS!!!"
*investors fastly approaching to the stage*
Iwata: "I'll do what it takes to improve Wii U. Please, unde"
One Investor: "THAT'S IT, I'M KILLING HIM! AAAAAAH"
*this one is running towards Iwata*
Iwata: "Hori shitto...HAI!"
Investor: "HAI WHAT?!?"
Iwata: "Surprise: Mario Kart 8 comes out in March!"
All Investors: "...You won this time. But we'll win the war, remember. Remember that!"

:lol
I thought of something this similar the other day too. Iwata will no doubt do everything he can to show off, at least, a good first half of 2014 and starve off any immediate company shenanigans from unhappy investors.

Maybe I can finally get my, "We're in the process of bolstering out Western arms with dev studios. Retro Studios are now big enough to manage two simultaneous IPs!", right?

...

...right?

Man (could) do illogical thing when their (life) position is in danger. Though I don't know if investor really on their edge against Iwata because of Wii U situation since 3DS is soaring sky high.

Well, the Easter weekend is considerable late in 2014 (20.04.), so I could see a mid-late march release as well as an early April release.

EDIT: JFYI, in 2008 Easter was on the 23rd of March (!)

March would be a bad idea imo. That month already has an insane amount of games coming out for it including big ones like Titanfall, Infamous Second Son, Dark Souls 2, MGSV GZ and FFX HD.

why would it be a bad idea with those titles being released? Maybe those titles are the ones being affected.
