??? I don't see what you are saying is contradicting what he said here?

3DS is the only system able to sell tons of software this gen. Is that something wrong?

It will all depend on PS4 receiving their big title and when NX drop. If NX drop 2016, u can bet that NX will cannibalize 3DS sales a tons.
lol I was like ??????

3ds is his chip in the shoulder, it seems.

Didn't the 2011 earthquake cause a bunch of delays and other messes for the 3DS and possibly Wii U? Hopefully there aren't any disasters like that that could hurt the launch (and for other more important reasons of course).

Yeah; price, earthquake causing software delays during the first weeks after launch, PSP still strong were the primary reasons why 3DS slowed down at the beginning.

strange decision, a late July or early August release would be better, just before Obon
FFXIII clearly showed how holidays don't affect sw sales much.

I saw on esuteru, that during a Exist Archive stream the producer of the game had expressed concern about the game sales... something along the lines of it being hard to continue to make new IP if they won't sell. There is some fear there.

If anyone wants to translate here's the transcript:
I just read someone's twitter-translated views on it, but I think you got the gist of it right.

Honestly, I feel what they should take away from this isn't "it's hard to make new IP", just maybe "be more careful about making spiritual successor IP's". They've literally just done the same thing 3 times this year which is create a lower-budget, not-as-attractive version of a previously popular IP and 3 times they've bombed.

I don't particularly think it's just a "new IP" thing either. Kenka Bancho 6 underperformed too, a well-established IP. They had success with a new IP in 2012 (Conception on PSP) so maybe they just need to be a bit more selective with what they do.

Oh, you were talking about the hardware - because software is gonna drop no matter the period after the first week; that's why I also think hw would not be affected much by Obon if it follows the sw pattern.

Also, Winter holidays are a "Nintendo thing" since when Sony doesn't have wide-appeal products, because I remember PSP and PS2 selling really well in December, both hw and sw. It's not about a comparison (these days Nintendo is selling better during holidays) but about the increase per se - PSP and PS2 were quite positively affected by the period. Your examples seem a bit biased since pre-2003 Nintendo had two platforms while Sony only one, and the full picture is not there.

Longevity is a great quality that PlayStation systems have yet Nintendo systems mostly lack.

That 15m for the PS2 was in autumn 2004, Famitsu would keep tracking the system for an additional 8 years, I doubt 3DS will still be tracked in three years.
This really shows the different strategy each company has. Nintendo would choose to kill previous gen hardware after new one is released to force transition to new gen even though the previous gen hardware is still selling decently. (RIP GBA) Sony would choose to keep the previous gen hardware on the shelf to get that long tail revenue while delaying the transition to the new gen.

3DS might not be tracked in 3 years. It won't be because of no demand but rather Nintendo stops making it.

That cheap 2DS in addition to some of those 3DS software big hitters...2016 decline might not be as much as anticipated. Yokai Watch 3, new main DQ as well as Pokemon might happen next year - in addition to smaller titles like Joker 3, SMT4Final or MH Stories.
I'm not sure these 3 can be tiered in the same group...

3ds will sell more than one million imho, if dqxi will hit next year
3DS will sell more than one million in Japan in 2016 even without DQXI.

On a slightly related note, Pokemon 2DS bundle looks so good. It doesn't have this cheap feel the 2DS in the west has.

MHP3 was a monster, wow. Both this game and MHX were supply constrained during the first weeks - this allowed the former to sell huge numbers later on, while demand for the latter migrated towards the eShop; if digital sales are counted, MHX is almost on par with MH4.

It won't be because of no demand but rather Nintendo stops making it.

.
I wouldn't really say that there is different strategy between NIntendo and Sony when it comes to handling previous gen. It's just that Nintendo titles are so big part of any Nintendo platform that when Nintendo decides make the jump the system dies pretty quickly even in Japan. Sales of PS systems rely on completely on third party games and with those the transition is slower.

Well with the DS we actually saw third party releases drop off quite a while before the 3DS launched. If the 3DS' successor launches next year then the 3DS won't follow the same pattern(for a while it looked like it was going to).

Yeah. Things have changed a little bit probably because the uncertainty of current deticated console market in Japan and because 3DS is this gen by far most safe place to release games. Third parties want to milk it further than previous Nintendo systems. Still because Nintendo has so many big games that should kickstart the sales of next handheld pretty quickly I see the transition will be again far quicker than it was with recent PS system like PS2 -> PS3 or PSP -> Vita or PS3 -> PS4. Worldwide it's different matter. There the strategy differs (PS systems sell far longer in developing countries than Nintendos consoles).

Really? 2010 was a great year on DS in terms of third party software: Inazuma Eleven 3, Ni no Kuni, Dragon Quest VI, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, Etrian Odyssey III, Super Robot Wars L, Ghost Trick, Okamiden, One Piece: Gigant Battle, Momotarou Dentetsu World, Magician's Quest, Radiant Historia, Kingdom Hearts RE:Coded, Love Plus+, Super Robot Wars OG Saga, Shiren The Wanderer 4, Lufia...

I'm not sure these 3 can be tiered in the same group...
I was just listing some notable software releases outside of the big 3, obviously SMT4F won't sell nearly as much a Joker for example.

Another thing to consider is that Nintendo hardware tends to have BC while Sony's doesn't.

Because of this, Sony might like selling old gen hardware for longer to ensure people can play late gen releases. For Nintendo, they probably figure you can play these games on the new system. In a sense, they were still shipping ds and wii with 3ds and wiiu.

PS4 is the first Sony console without any kind of BC when it launched. Vita has digital BC and earlier models of PS3 had full BC.

I'm not sure digital BC should count due to how limited the catalogue was/is and since this removes the selling point of "I can sell my old console and keep my games to play them on the next one".

I think Jojo holds that title. CH titles go for 20-25k FW and this is about 5k. Jojo went from 400k FW to 40k. It definitely cratered a hell of a lot more.

But yeah, shame about MeiQ. It's pretty impossible to find footage of online which is quite rare, even when I search for the Japanese game. People just aren't playing it. Oh well.

Vita has had some crappy holidays but I don't think Gundam Vs. is going to hold up this one, Minecraft is doing the heavy lifting all on its own.

Realistically, like you pointed out, Vita has only had one decent holiday season prior to this. 2012 was a disaster and 2014 only had Gundam Breaker 2 which came too late in the game to make a difference - PSN didn't do what it should have.

2013 had remodel and PSTV and then Final Fantasy to top things off just after the holidays. It's actually kinda impressive that Minecraft is helping Vita pull similar numbers to that year on its own. Goes to show that its the first time the console has had appropriate software for the holidays.
I wonder how much better Vita would've done worldwide if it had launched at $199/equivalent in Japan with Minecraft.

When you put it like that it's not far off 3DS's 2016(3DS is probably bigger thanks to DQXI, Youkai Watch 3 and MH Stories). I distinctly remember discussions about how support had seemingly shifted to the PSP though.

I mean, it's almost an annual tradition at this point ("there are no 3DS games for 2013/14/15 publishers seem to be shifting support to XXX !")

...until people realized that most 3DS games are announced like half a year before they launch.

I've been guilty of that but I'm referring back to the DS days. There was a point where the DS slowed down and the PSP picked up. The PSP was still going very strong post-3DS release even.

DS support dried up after 3DS came not, not prior.
A lot of Playstation system support, following the launched of their successors, is in the form of stuff like visual novels and stuff. PSP is still seeing new releases in the genre, and it's something that never caught on with Nintendo systems.

I don't remember any specific software / IP that clearly migrated from DS to PSP after 2009, to be honest. PSP got its usual IPs, with software houses strengthening their offering. Not even otaku stuffs such Love Plus.

Rather than focus on specific titles, it's better to look at the company support.
Square Enix (minus Dragon Quest), Sega, Bandai Namco, and so on moved their higher priority titles away from DS and focused more on PSP.

I honestly might be misremembering but I thought for sure there was a lot of speculation about a DS successor before Nintendo dropping the bomb in the investor's meeting based on the slow down of announcements/releases.

Well it's not always specific IPs but personnel too. IIRC A bunch of Crystal Chronicles staffers moved onto the Lord of... series. Wow it's actually quite weird how long ago all this stuff was.

Those companies' support to PSP had been great since 2007 or so - they simply kept supporting PSP as they were doing before and started to prepare software for 3DS.

Square Enix released 21 titles on DS from 2009 onwards - 12 on PSP. Biggest Square Enix PSP games were Crisis Core (2007) and Dissidia (2008). Similar reasoning standed for Bandai Namco and Sega (which equally supported DS and PSP during their heydays).

I thought the Lord of games were farmed out to Access while the FFCC games were internally made by Kawazu's division?

They were but I believe development was lead by internal SE staffers. I actually think it was Nirolak who pointed it out to me when we were trying to figure out where those staffers went(I speculated that they were part of the internal staff for DQX).

Actually judging by this post I found with a quick google some of the CC leads just became part of the main FF Team.

On this note, where would people consider the primary support of various publishers to be going now?
I think it's a bit harder to say now but I think the majority of publishers are focused on either the PS4 or the "PS Ecosytem" right now. If we're talking the west as well then maybe a side of PC.

Square Enix is definitely PS4 - FFXV,FFVII,Star Ocean 5, DQXI, KH3, etc.
Sega is PS4 - Yakuza & Valkyria.... hmm what else do they have nowadays?(EDIT: Miku!)
Bamco is PS Ecosystem - Stuff like Digimon, God Eater, Tales, etc.
Level 5 is 3DS - Youkai Watch, Snack World.
Capcom is pretty split - 3DS gets Monster Hunter & Ace Attorney, PS4 everything else.
MMV AQL - Mobile? Maybe Vita at this point(just released Valkyrie Drive, Uppers is only thing announced?)
Konami - Dead
Koei Tecmo PS4 - Musou, Ni-Oh, Gust titles, Toukiden.

EDIT:Koei Tecmo is actually probably PS Ecosystem considering how well they do on Vita. OH and I forgot Sega does Hatsune Miku!

"various" is vague.
I think most mid to big sized ones will try NX, unlike WiiU, but small/niche ones will still be reticent (apart those that were already on 3DS). More publishers will try PC too, but that doesn't really have an impact in Japan, just less exclusives overall.
Big productions will always be on PS4 due to its impact in the west, and most stuff that is already selling there (like Musou) will obviously still be there.
I think it'll be more interesting to come back on this once we see what NX is supposed to be. 3DS will mostly just be stop gap for good sales, nothing defining a strategy change right now.

edit: oh, specific pubs/ips? I think previous sentences sum it up well: trying NX at launch (bigger efforts than WiiU), using PS4 and PC for western sales, 3DS for japanese ones. Vita for ultra niche (VN).

Square: PS4
Sega: PS4 and a bit of 3DS (they have Yakuza, Miku and new Valkyria for PS4 and Sonic/Puyo for 3DS)
Namco: diversified, they have good support for all platforms.
Koei: PS4/Vita
Konami: PS4 (MGS and PES)
Capcom: 3DS and PS4
Level 5: 3DS
