Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2016 (Dec 19 - Dec 25)

I'm expecting Vita to be down to about 500k-550k this year which will be a fairly significant drop. We're beginning to see the migration of the third parties that have supported the console well (i.e. Senran Kagura PS4-only; Trails of Cold Steel PS4-only).

Also, there's not really any big games left on the horizon for it. Maybe a few in the early months (DanganRonpa/Super Robot Wars/Accel World vs. SAO) but other than that, the latter half of the year has nothing announced. I'm sure there will be a Gundam game here and a One Piece there but we've always had a number of upcoming games that I thought for sure would've been 100k+ sellers and I can't really say the same for 2017.

Still, there's enough to keep it from a complete collapse.
I'd say that how the Vita held was impressive considering the handheld it was proclaimed dead back in 2015 :p

Vita's lifecycle is a testament to the strength of Sony's third party relations. If Vita was a Nintendo machine it would have been dropped in its first year. Sony has done an amazing job.

don't think it's a given
could nintendo switch release and moderate ps4 grow offset 3ds decline and ps3 + wii u being dead?

and to clarify i talk about the overall market including software. not just hardware
software for ps3 and wii u will be abysmal this year

We talk for a total of 5m hardware sold in 2016 with Nintendo letting Wii U die and abandoning 3DS.

Software and hardware for Wii U and PS3 were abysmal for 2016.

400k hardware and 2,5m software aren't numbers that are difficult to be offset. Q4 2016 was up and Q1 2017 will be up too.

Dengeki, the superior tracker has updated,
with numbers from 2 weeks ago.

First week shipment of Momotetsu around 205k.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Monster Strike also on dengeki, at 808k and 963k respectively.

2 million units of software sold on xmas week, 1.5m just 3DS games.

31 million games sold with one week to go, a little less than 50% is just 3DS.

P.S. What's the Rejet game at #22? Can't figure it out.
So I can check it out properly when I get home.

A Nintendo did with the wiiu continuing supporting it instead of abansoning it first party side as Sony did with vita?
Two different business model with similar results, being the home and portable segment status different in japan (both results disappointing of course )

Sony has done an amazing job trying to kill Vita.

Sony has nothing to do with Vita's hold last 2 years, Minecraft has.

Right but they haven't had to. If Nintendo ditched 3DS two years ago third parties would have fled for the hills.

Third parties have continued to support the Vita and Sony's only tried killing it in favour of getting that support on to the PS4. The fact that they can even try that(and it looks like their succeeding) is a testament to how amazing they are at third party relations.

How good or bad Sony is with third parties doesn't have many things to do with Vita's lifecycle and Vita's small hw declines last 2 years. If it wasn't Minecraft it would be way lower already.

In the end that Minecraft has done to Vita what Splatoon has done to Wii U, extending their lifes for 1-2 years, doesn't change the big picture.

Both are massive failures in the eyes of their parent companies and the market.

That shows different business models but in vita and wiiu cases both have been a failure
Seeing greatness in an abandoned portable that performed almost (almost) on par with the failed wiiu is strange

PS4 Japanese third party support really is a sign of Sony's strenght on the market

Vita isnt

What am I reading?

Sony dropping basically all support for it after a year and a half is not deserving of praise. Pushing third party games was literally their ONLY job because they had no faith in putting resources on it.

Fair enough, it wouldn't have even made it to Minecraft's release if it wasn't for the strong third party support though.

That's what actually makes it all the more impressive. Despite doing relatively quite badly the Vita still gets the most releases of any platform(even more than PS4 I think). "The Sony ecosystem" has a near monopoly on JP support.

The thing is no one cares that Sony first party dropped it. People are wary of the Switch based on a perceived lack of support for the Wii U from Nintendo and a shortened lifespan.

Minecraft was published also on wiiu
What a strong and amszing job by Nintendo with third parties!

JP monopoly but higher sales on Nintendo platform sw wise from third parties (3ds)

No one cares about Sony first party but no one buys the console (are we really praising vita sales? Putting home and portable in perspective they are the equivalent of the wiiu sales)

People is worried about switch for first party because actually people look at Nintendo consoles primarly because of first party, as they look at sony's consoles primarly for third parties

Fact is: when there are only first party on one side and third on the other and console are abandoned from the counterpart, they fail

Wiiu and vita are both examples of bad management

I'm not sure you're understanding at all. The amount of third party support for Vita is amazing considering the failure of the system, the fact that it's direct competitor is so dominant and the fact that Sony themselves dropped the system two years ago. That is what is being praised.

That's the reason Vita is still being talked about now whilst Wii U is officially discontinued.

I do think that a lot of what was done around 2013 to get certain multi-plats on board has ensured the console is still getting content well into 2017.

For example, I think Sony got Koei-Tecmo on board fairly early with musou ports (Dynasty Warriors 8 XL; Warriors Orochi 3) and that's meant we've gotten things like Berserk last year and Musou Stars this year, just because the engine and all the framework is all already set up.

Of course, a lot of it comes down to third parties who were always going to be on board with the console regardless. Acquire/Compile Heart/Falcom/Gust etc. were on board regardless, but again a lot of them use frameworks that favor Vita development/porting (i.e. Phyreengine).

Although, if this interview is to believed, Compile Heart almost gave up on Vita until they saw Soul Sacrifice, which is a strange series of events.

Sony has done jack nothing in Japan outside of Minecraft for the Vita. Honestly they've done quite a bit more for it in Europe and North America. Stepping in for Minecraft was frankly enough.

Yeah, hopefully there is some sort of notable upward swing. This isn't good for software/hardware releases no matter how you slice it.

The question isn't whether Vita 3rd parties will move to the Switch, the question is whether people buying Vita games today will want to do the same with the Switch.

True but there is a chicken and egg element. The Vita audience remained engaged because of the amount of content that was released.

Well, that goes hand in hand.

Yup, Vita owners won't upgrade to Switch because Switch won't get all the Vita games. If I'm a Vita fan whose been playing God Eater, Toukiden, Senran Kagura, Trails, Atelier and Neptunia then Switch might not be too appealing to me because it's only getting one of two of those franchises.

The failure of Kenka Bancho shows what happens when you haven't got that synergy with other software on a platform.

If you want to praise someone for the amount of third party Vita gets it's not Sony but consumers that insist to buy software for the system for the simple reason that this is Japan and Vita is a handheld.

I totally agreed with you there. Sony had been quite transparent on their attempt to kill Vita. However as Vita keep selling in Japan and the owner of the platform actually keep buying game on the platform, Vita actually stay kinda alive till now.

If the fans at that time just do Wii U treatment toward Vita, it will be more or less over.

The question isn't whether Vita 3rd parties will move to the Switch, the question is whether people buying Vita games today will want to do the same with the Switch.

I actually feel that Vita is more inline with more hardcore gamer so they are more or less going to get a Switch there.

It is the 20 million 3DS owner which i am afraid on whether they will show up or not for Switch.I don't even dare to imagine how many of those 20 million is more or less happy with Mobile right now and don't think it is a need to get a Switch this time.(Nintendo really need to get more mobile game into Switch too this time so, people can use Switch to play their mobile games too.)
