I know this is stating the obvious. But Monster Hunter is a beast. It had the lowest drop this week, despite the fact it's already sold more than 3 and a half million units. Also cool to see the return of Gran Turismo. Don't think we'll see it next week though (unless there were a bunch of offers for New Years).

MHP3 should pretty easily sell 4.5 million at least, but i'll be interesting to see if it can reach 5 million or even surpass it. I think that would take some time, and might not be something it can reach so easily.

AKB1/48 might very likely actually do over 500k, like the producer expected. Certainly a big winner here for Dec sales which again shows the sales power of non-games or non-conventional games.

DKCR is a biggest surprise of December honestly. Edging closer to a million each week, and not slowing down that much at all. Great legs and great opening. It has probably surpassed most expectations people had of the title in Japan.

Ni no Kuni continues to drop, even as prices plunge lower and lower. It looks unlikely that it will even sell out the 600k initial shipment, and there's pretty much no chance that it will sell much more than 600k ever. Seems to be a similar situation with the initial shipments of IE3. It'll be interesting to see what this means for Level 5 when they release their next big (>500k) game. Will retailers still eat it up, or will they be more conservative and let legs determine if they order more?

The 3rd Birthday is performing like most of S-E's weaker brand offerings. It's not quite the level of bomba (<100k), but it's not doing particularly great either. Should eventually sell about 200-250k. That's better than Lord of Arcana, 4WoL, and KH Re:Coded, but it's also a much higher budget game.

They are porting it to PS3, no?

Different game, I believe.

Level 5 have had success with different versions of I11 games and a 3DS version of NNK would obviously be more viable in the west.

The whole game is designed around the book. How would you possibly "port" it without the book?

Hino could get off his high horse and simply implement a virtual book in the game. It's really just his ego that makes it demand a physical book. He thought it's just a brilliant idea.

Couldn't they, like, program the book into the game? They could even give it a super cool 3D effect on 3DS for turning pages and such.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood has a full big manual in the game menu, I think they can do something similar;

I really wonder how Cardboard Senki is going to fair. It's another big package game from Level-5 and it has been in development for ages. At least it's coming out alongside an anime which could boast its legs.

I think AKB is going to struggle to hit 400k, and I don't think it will. A 73% drop in your second week isn't good unless you're having supply problems. However, I'm not really all that aware of the kind of audience that listens to AKB48.

Since Tactics Ogre has shown that it can outsell T3B handily, I hope S-E pays more attention to the Quest team in the near future. It'll be great if Matsuno and Minagawa's team can put out either another PSP game or a 3DS in the future. Hopefully it's an original new game this time.

Also: Oh how the consoles have fallen.
PSP is the only that even stayed close to last years sales at the same period. DS is understandable since its on its way out but yeah overall not a healthy period for the rest

what do you expect from dissidia 012 and ff4cc?iirc the first dissidia outsold crisis core within 2 weeks (700k?)

The PSP resurgence has been nothing short of amazing and that on the back of so little (comparatively). It seems from the outside to be mostly the work of Monster Hunter and a good deal of Square-Enix love, but I can't help but feel there are other factors at work here.

Systems typically don't get that kind of "second wind" that late into their lifespans, especially outside of Japan. The only other example I can think of is what Pokemon did for the Gameboy, and even there, the effect in Japan was seemingly magnified compared to other markets.

Is it the comparative homogeneity of Japanese youth culture that does it? A shared urban experience, lifestyle and exposure to the same kinds of media? Do Japanese gamers have a more efficient word-of-mouth network than gamers in other locations? Why doesn't this happen elsewhere?

I expect Dissidia012 to do at least about as well as Dissidia. So a low estimate would be 800-850k versus Dissidia's 900k. A high estimate would be over a million. I expect FF4CC to do maybe 100-150k at best. It's not a high profile release, and I won't be surprised if it opens with very weak sales (under 80k).

Glad to see DKCR holding up very well. A million is definitely within reach at this point. Monster Hunter's legs are insane. I really thought it would have hit the saturation point by now, but it's actually holding better than Nintendo's own games.

What caused the PS3 and PSP Go bump?

Didn't the Go finally get hacked or something like that? I don't know if that would explain the bump, but it's the only thing that comes immediately to mind. PS3 sales seem mystifying though.

There were some insane New Years sales, which may explain GT5 returning to the Top 20 for a week. The Go's impending doom of being cracked likely helped it some more.

I think Donkey Kong will be as important as Mario and Zelda now. Hopefully they won't fuck around with the IP again. Makes me wonder how well Kid Icarus will be received.

Kid Icarus is going to be an interesting title though if it hits in the launch window will probably sell well regardless. It also has an impact on the future. Sakurai has said he wouldnt mind working on other ancient IPs and bringing them back but if KI doesnt live upto expectations I wonder if that will ever happen.

Now that we're done with 2010 in terms of sales, here's a little look back at the end of 2009, where there was this cute exchange... :lol

How many of those are million sellers? I would say none, so I guess they're all "smaller games". :)

Edit: Did anyone back then really believe that RgG4, Hokuto Musou, and GT5 would all end up selling about the same amount of units in Japan? :lol

It's amusing how it was like 1.3% off being the best selling console for the year, and that's simply unacceptable for Nintendo. Roll out the next gen 3DS! :lol

How come Gt5 is back in the charts? Chris posted pics of gt5 copies being returned or maybe that was stacks of used GT5 copies. I thought that was a death nail?
If it sells at this similar amount, in 3 years it may break a million copies. :p

Sorry...but I can't let this one go. It's death knell.

But yes, the PS3's suddenly resurgent sales is a bit of a strange anomaly for this week.
