What does the PS3 have 2011?

Sengoku Musou 3 Z, Shin Sangoku Musou 6, RgG Of the End, Winning Eleven 2012, Ni no Kuni, Tales of Xillia, Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Those are just the announced titles we have now. I think it's more than comparable to 2010's line up, and more so because there will be a major FF game on the system. If Versus gets delayed even further and does not make 2011 at all, then it will still be relatively similar to 2010 in terms of the line-up of bigger titles.

There are also several titles which will do at least 100k+, but might go over 200k in sales: Trico, Catherine, Reminiscences of Haruhi, etc. I really don't see how 2011's outlook for PS3 in Japan is remotely weaker than the releases in 2010.
Well, I don't think Versus XIII will be hitting this year, so there's that.
See, I thought RoG of the End was actually a PSP game, so there's that as well.

Seeing the weak performance of Ni no Kuni on DS, I'm not sure how well it'd translate to PS3. I'm also not expecting Tales of Xillia to be too much bigger than the previous Tales games on PS3, despite being an exclusive.
Sengoku Basara seems to bigger than the Warriors titles now, and I think Fist of the North Star will also end up staying a bigger title than all of them.

I do expect to see a rise in PES sales though.

Though I also forgot to factor in the possible price drop, which continued to carry PS3 for a good portion of last year.

With a price drop, it will definitely be up.
Without one though, I definitely see it going down.

I am not sure what you mean about resurgence either, its not like MH games never sold on the PSP and we don't have like 10 1m sellers (at least I don't think we do) on that platform either. Its been good in Japan, and that is about it.

There are more than 10 1 million sellers on the PSP worldwide. Though, outside of Monster Hunter, none of that is in Japan.

10 1 million sellers worldwide isn't much of an accomplishment on any platform, so I'm not sure what you are talking about. The Gamecube far exceeds that, probably has more 2 million sellers worldwide. PSP Software sales have been dreadful for pretty much it's whole existence, strong worldwide sellers have been few and far in between. The closest it has come to having a worldwide hit is probably Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core and... Kingdom Hearts? Not even sure about that.

Edit: I see what you were responding too, but I'm pretty sure he was just talking about in Japan.

azalyn gives us a ton of shipment estimates and info:
Saga 3 - 80k
Another Century's Episode Portable - 100k
Arcana Heart 3 PS3 - 30K 360 - 10k
Kingdom Hearts final mix - 120k
Last Story - 120k(pre-order bonus is fairly limited, already sold out many places)
Dragon Age Origins - ps3 50k / 360 30k

Psp

valkyria chronicles - 120k
There's no way my sister could be this cute! - 50k
kenka banchou 5 - 120k
A Certain Magical Index - 60k

Also 13-14th is when Nintendo is having a business meeting so that's when more business side of 3ds should be revealed.

Finally news that's only interesting to me: Dream Club for 360 quietly passed the 75k Mark, putting it into the top 20 of 360 releases in Japan.

DQX is still on track for Wii.

So 2011 could be 2009 again in the PS3 vs. Wii battle. PS3 takes the lead, until DQX comes out in the Fall and people buy the DQ special edition Wii (it has to be coming) to push it over for the year.
Wii sales stink. Wii 2 ASAP.
*ahem*

What were Xenoblade's ship numbers? 120k seems low, but I guess that's all they can expect a new IP Wii RPG to sell at this time.

I also wonder if MHP3 will end up outselling Black and White...

It's possible if there's a ton of re-releases. Or at least get very close.

I wouldn't expect there to be a huge number of Wii/TLS bundles out in the wild, but there's at least some. I doubt the 120k figure includes that.

I don't think the game will have any problems selling 120k in a couple weeks. Xenoblade did 83k first week and Blue Dragon did around 80.

Game went up to #5 in the Famitsu most wanted list and has been steadily in the top 5 sellers on Amazon since the 27th. That would suggest that 120k for the first shipment should be okay.

The amount of ads in the stores and demo kiosks suggest a pretty big TV ad blitz from Nintendo coming, which could change things and cause shortages. Hopefully they can restock quickly, because that's going to be key to get this game to 400k or so where it can be dubbed successful.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

If the PSP sales continue to be this good, it will surpass the sale numbers of the Super Famicom (17.17m according to Wikipedia) and Game Boy Advance (16.96m/Wikipedia) this year. That would be a huge success for Sony, at least in Japan.

There are more than 10 1 million sellers on the PSP worldwide. Though, outside of Monster Hunter, none of that is in Japan.

This being a japanese sales thread that was the point, the PSP does not really count outside JP.

So I am not seeing a "resurgence" when the system has always been good but not great there and software wise is carried by pretty much one title.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

PS3? It never overtook Wii, but came pretty damn close, not many people would have predicted that after 2007/8.

of course, this time last year many people thought PS3 would beat the Wii in 2010 "easily".

That said, the console hardware race now strikes me as largely irrelevant.

NDS - 5.41
PSP - 3.52

Are those attach rates overall or just for December?
Overall.

Which means for total software

NDS: 173.935.000
PSP: 58.610.000

If we mix Famitsu with Media Create PSP sold 21.000.000 of software this year (110% up) and DS 27.000.000 of software (4% down) - different trackers this isn't 100% accurate, numbers are very higher from Famitsu top 30 summing sales.

Mixing weekly Famitsu shares + Media-Create totals (2010-01-04~2010-12-26 - 51 weeks):

NDS - 22.5 million
PSP - 16.6 million

Adding this last week should raise them to ~23m and ~17m, respectively.

Not bad for psp this year, considering 98% of those sales come from third parties. And DS is still a monster

That total number put psp software sales higher than total gba software sales, no? Garaph/Famitsu has the total at 56M.
No doubt PSP has had more active years but one or two years ago I never thought psp could surpass or even catch with the gba.

So much for not having a resurgence.

Famitsu has the GBA at 60.5 million sold-through (Nintendo has 73 million shipped).

Assuming the PSP sold ~17 million in 2010, its total would go to to almost 55 million (Famitsu).

Media Create never shared the GBA LTD software sales?

third parties love the PSP and they'll most probably love PSP2 as well.

i'm happy everything turned out like it did these last few years. the future looks bright.

This being a japanese sales thread that was the point, the PSP does not really count outside JP.

So I am not seeing a "resurgence" when the system has always been good but not great there and software wise is carried by pretty much one title.

The way your post was worded implied to me you were talking about worldwide figures. I don't think you can argue that MHP3 didn't give the hardware a resurgence, which in turn may expand the userbase so that further, sizeable titles may have a shot at selling more than they could have previously sold.

Much closer to the release they talked about the huge pre-orders, and said that it is not impossible for them to sell over 500k eventually making it a true mega hit. I don't mean sales expectations, I was just referring to that comment.
Ah, gotcha. Well, if Bandai was expecting to sell 250k, 300k at most, it may be that the game is supply constrained right now. Not sure if it will reach 500k, not because they can't, but their fans usually spend a lot of money in lots of stuff. New DVDs come out almost every week, and these are not cheap. The whole Morning Musume movement still generates more revenue in terms of concerts, but mainly because their concert tickets are twice as expensive as AKB48 (around 7,000 yens against 3,000 or so). They make up in singles and DVDs sales, which eventually strain the wallets of their followers.

However, lately they got the spotlight. They are virtually everywhere, they have several programs in different channels about them (AKBINGO!, Shuukan AKB, Nemousu TV, Ariyoshi AKB Kyowakoku, AKB-kyuu Gourmet Stadium, etc), members appear (and even lead) doramas that rate well enough, they got a number of radio programs, got two professional models (Shinoda Mariko and Itano Tomomi) who probably earn more with their careers than as members of the group, etc. You cannot spend a day in Japan without finding them somewhere, and that is the key for their casual following. New fans join every day, and continue buying stuff the hardcore followers stopped buying (because they already moved to newer things and things the new fans are not interested in still, like DVDs and theater CDs).

For example, in the latest daily Oricon rankings after Kouhaku Uta Gassen (the NHK end of year music show) they had 4 singles in the top 10, including Ponytail to Shushu, released back in May (only Utada Hikaru back in '99 had 4 singles in the top 10, back when she was at full strength). Considering the hardcore fans buy everything first day, and most of the other fans buy it before the first week ends, they get a constant flow of new and casual fans buying their wares through time. Ponytail to Shushu sold little over 500k units first week, and in the next 7 months it has sold 150k more. Heavy Rotation sold over 500k units in the first week, and in the next 4 months sold 200k more. Beginner sold over 800k units first week, and in the next 2 months sold 200k more. If the game follows this pattern, it could break 500k in several months, but you won't probably notice it until the Famitsu top 500 at the end of 2011.

It is a pity the 会いにいけるアイドル ("idol you can meet") concept would never work for gaming. It could be interesting to be able to meet Miyamoto and shake hands with him, even if only for 10 seconds...

So, now that we have 3DS launch lineup its a good time to see an updated 2011 lineup (Jan-Apr), do you have it at hand Chris? 3DS week is absolutely nuts but its going to be some entertaining months to us, even if 3rd parties trying to make-up their financial results before fiscal year ends are scared shitless.

I see a lot of games on that list that will hurt because of other games coming out the exact same day. Stacked.

Yeah, tons of fun coming up. Tons of tears as well. Wouldn't surprise me to see some more delays, one thing is trying to put some make-up on your financial results but sending something to die will not only fail to help your FY results but you end up wasting a bullet. But there's also stuff getting dated yet, like the Spirits baseball series that will go on sale April 1st week or 3DS post-launch lineup which is fairly unknown.

Thanks Chris :)

With few exceptions the only titles that sold really well on the PSP were ones that should have sold really well on the PSP (Dissidia, KH, etc)

I don't count a resurgence as something that gives a 150k piece of software the chance to be an awesome 200k piece of software

The only real title that benefited from the PSP was MH, MH drives the platform and is pretty much the only title there people by in ridiculous fashion.

Bandai Namco has 22 releases on that list. Do they want to close this year?

PSP software market share has gone from non-existant to respectable especially this year. There has been a big resurrection.

It's up compared to previous years for the PSP, yes, but those percentages also reflect the drop in DS software sales and releases in 2010. Using percentages alone is always a little problematic, in that regard. PSP software is definitely up substantially in 2010 over 2009, though.
