Having the same argument for 100th time in these threads since apparently that's the only thing that matters:

Vita had a massive drop YOY this quarter.

According to some people:

Platform 1 - 2.500.000 (-35% YoY)

"Big decline, things are very worrisome for this system"

Platform 2 - 300.000 (-1% YoY)

"Only system that didn't drop, great!"

Reading that it almost feels like Platform 2 is in a better spot despite selling eight time less.

YW2 combined has twice outsold Pokemon, Nintendo's going to need to get back on the 3 releases train.

Not really. But they'll have to rework their multi-media strategy, or future young adults in Japan will be more eager to play Yo-Kai Watch 6 rather than Pokémon Gen 9.

yeah... i think the vita's 2015 is gonna resemble the 3ds's 2014. except i think sales are just going to get worse over time. it won't have a strong stream of releases like the 3ds did at the end of last year (seriously that lineup was pretty crazy for an older system).

01./01. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Shin Uchi <RPG> (Level 5) {2014.12.13} (¥4.968) - 265.226 / 2.007.327 <80-100%> (-50%)
08./08. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke <RPG> (Level 5) {2014.07.10} (¥4.937) - 34.336 / 3.050.178 <80-100%> (-9%)

Don't spend it all in one go, Hino!

PS4's continued limp keeps astounding me. Do Japanese think Playstation became a Western brand? Did Sony shoot themselves in the foot? Should they apologize?

It seems that the japanese people didnt buy the hype and are actually waiting for games that justify they owning the console.

Also home console gaming is dead in japan

This is just observation for 3DS that it is in decline. We already know its a good system that sold well.

Hmmmm so how about %s in decline?

3DS ~ 36 %

Wii U ~ 32 %

PS3 ~ 45 %

PSV ~ 5 %

Just to put things in perspective.

3DS 2014:
3.153.045

PSV lifetime sales 2012-2014:
3.423.077

mario party 9 was over 600k and mario party island tour was over 400k.

kirby's also a really consistent franchise. canvas curse did 282k before the ds really took off. rainbow curse may pull in 200k.

Mario Party could reach 300k and Kirby could go 150k-200k.

Then again I wonder if Nintendo would bundle Mario Party? So unless we get something shocking, Mario Party could indeed be one of the best sellers for Wii U this year.

I assume Xenoblade Chronicles didn't light up the charts right, even being on Wii? And neither does a zelda/star fox title.

Neither did people in west. Can't believe I am still reading that people only are buying PS4s for hype. PS4 has attach rate of 4.4 after holiday season and it's dominating some euro charts like 3DS in Japan. Problem for PS4 in Japan is that it doesn't have software that interests japanese gamers. Just look at that software chart. Two games in top thirty.

This. 3DS sales are not great but reading the comments some weeks you would think the Vita was actually in a good spot compared to the 3DS.

Nobody (sane) thinks Vita is doing better than the 3DS. They're just pointing out sales information as far as I can tell. Though I'm not sure why some people get so offended over it.

2014 Vita was in a good spot compared to 2013 Vita.
2014 3DS saw a massive decline from 2013 3DS.

If you conflate these two, I can see how you might get confused. As two seperate statements, there's nothing wrong with either.

Some cats need the 3DS to be held up on a pedestal. Perhaps because it's the last viable system in Japan.

They problem is that people answer some statistical data with numbers in a completely different perspective as if it erased the first statistical data. And the only objective of such answers is console war stuff.

HAHA, YES! NO MORE PSP.

Now devs can focus on Vita.

It has been a while since the days when PSP got bigger titles and ate part of Vita's lunch. Nowadays are only very niche games that sell less than 10k and wouldn't make any difference if released on Vita.

Is YW as a multi media franchise more popular than Pokemon now? The movies are breaking records iirc.

That would be an overstatement, but the momentum is there. Pokémon movies drop in numbers year by year since 2010:

DP4 (2010) - $71,143,529
BW1 (2011) - $53,387,786
BW2 (2012) - $44,057,737
BW3 (2013) - $32,293,377
XY1 (2014) - $24,720,400 (not sure if those are final numbers)

This is a result of lack of excitement/care in the franchise's animation department and general incompetence. For 2015's movie, they are changing the scriptwriter for the first time since (I believe) 2001 as a result to XY1's disappointing numbers, but I'm not sure if that'll do.

There are people who supposedly don't see it, but Pokémon hasn't been doing great from a multi-media perspective compared to years ago. They've been playing too safe, and now that Yo-Kai Watch is becoming big, it shows. Hopefully, the 20th Anniversary will resolve certain issues.

Oh my! Could YW2.5 outsell ORAS?

I wonder if Vita can beat the 3DS this year. I anticipate that 3DS will have an even bigger YoY drop this year that could bring it to Vita territory. Maybe Japan will get a 3rd gen Vita as well towards the holidays. It will be very close I reckon.

A new model and a price drop could help 2015. Also, some Square-Enix exclusives (like Saga 2015) are bigger games than almost all the 2014 lineup.

I hope you're seeing this, Iwata. You need to get some more Kirby-esque games' sales for the n3DS and the next handheld. :p

Assuming we get a huge slew of new game announcements, coupled to a price cut, coupled to a revision that uses SD cards, and Mon Hun 5 exclusivity, and a new exclusive Pokemon MMO, and exclusive rights to all future Yokai Watch games, tv shows, and films. Yeah, I could see that. Oh, also Nintendo would probably need to stop selling any of the 3DS family, new or old.

If those conditions are met, I can imagine it happening. Otherwise, I expect the Vita to land between 600 & 700k next year, with the 3DS substantially ahead.

Having the same argument for 100th time in these threads since apparently that's the only thing that matters:

Vita had a massive drop YOY this quarter.

And a very little drop for the whole year, so what´s your point? Trying to segment it like that does not matter. The overall result that matters.

Yes, the orange feline killed the yellow rodent. :p

Everyone sees pikachu as the mascot but Ash was always what reminded me most of Pokemon.

That's just not happening. Early last year I would argue that it was at least plausible. Last quarter destroyed any chances of this happening.

The overall result is GC at its peak. Does that look good to you? People held on to the YoY statistic for Vita because that was one of the few ways to make its numbers look decent.

And Q4 numbers usually suggest a lot for momentum moving forward.

Vita is not going to get a fraction of the major franchises PS4 is going to get (FF, KH, DQ, RE, MGS, GTA )

The PS3 had those games and didn't sell particularly well outside of it's long lifespan. The PS3 never actually sold a significant amount more than Vita does currently and the PS4 is tracking well below that.

People really need to temper their expectations for a PS4 "revival".

According to the last thread, it looks like the Yokai Watch franchise sold 6m+ in a single year. Has Pokemon done that?

It looks like Brain Training almost did it in 2006, and I assume if you add up various Mario games it's probably happened too.

PS4's continued limp keeps astounding me. Do Japanese think Playstation became a Western brand? Did Sony shoot themselves in the foot? Should they apologize?

I wouldn't put it pass them to think this when they see the worldwide sales figures. I'm expecting many of the games from them to be tailor made for Western tastes.

The overall result is GC at its peak. Does that look good to you? People held on to the YoY statistic for Vita because that was one of the few ways to make its numbers look decent.
It's more that it was a positive way to look at the system. The numbers were never going to 'look decent'. It's nice that it had such a strong 2014 though (when framed against the expectations for the device). It was supposed to die in 2014, not come within a whisker of its best year ever.

Much as I hate to pull the curtain back, I also have to add that it was largely done with tongue firmly in cheek. I can't imagine anyone was actually sitting back and considering the Vita 'saved' because it held on for one more year.

I wonder if Vita can beat the 3DS this year. I anticipate that 3DS will have an even bigger YoY drop this year that could bring it to Vita territory. Maybe Japan will get a 3rd gen Vita as well towards the holidays. It will be very close I reckon.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U will probably end at 3,000,000+ when it's all said and done. Probably quite a bit more.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the first evidence of how well the "NintendOS" concept could work. Especially considering how it's possibly a different execution compared to what it could be (especially considering Iwata mentioned iOS and Android as major examples for what they want to achieve).

kinda wonder if the wii u can get to 500k in japan this year. there's mario party 10 and... that will probably be its biggest seller by a longshot. maybe mario maker, but i doubt it has that wider appeal.

Animal Crossing for December 2015 likely could happen
