I wonder if Vita can beat the 3DS this year. I anticipate that 3DS will have an even bigger YoY drop this year that could bring it to Vita territory. Maybe Japan will get a 3rd gen Vita as well towards the holidays. It will be very close I reckon.

Vita will have a big drop this year too the only vita games i see it boosting vita is Digimon and Saga

I feel like it would have been smart for Nintendo to try and get Level 5 to make a Yokoi Watch Hub / Colosseum on the Wii U.

Nice Captain Toad numbers though - didn't believe it would ever make it to 150k and it's almost there in 2014 alone.

Like... how?

"Hey guys we don't even make a Pokemon Colosseum game for the Wii U, but you could you make a kind of expensive project to help our system that is selling really poorly?"

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

You just don't get it, Nirolak. Once Nintendo had brought on the discussion table that Level 5 employees would've gotten free cookies for the next 10 years, the deal would have been done, like, istantly. Match made in Heaven. Triplete. It's over, man.

Probably, eventually. But it may take quite some time for the streams to cross LTD. Hell, it's still significantly behind launch aligned, isn't it?

Calling one "totally dead" while looking to the other as some kind of savior is sorta weird.

You look at numbers without looking at reasons, both wii u and ps4 had a bad line up after the day one line up that why it's they doing bad numbers.
Ps4 will definitly have 3rd party support unlike wii u

I feel 3DS decline is important for the very reason you listed. The 3DS *is* the market.

Like, there are other sales happening, but the 3DS so overwhelmingly dominates what's left of the industry that the ups and downs of the system are effectively the ups and downs of the dedicated industry itself.

Road just put up this completely dire chart that depicts how the industry is at its worst point in 24 years now: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=965933

True, but you cannot expect a rise in the 4th year of a system that sold 5m on a yearly basis until now. Also, 3DS still pulled a 3m YTD, which is the 11th best YTD ever in Japan...? So, overall 3DS is doing fine; we expected a bit more for the revision, but overall, hardware and software are selling well. Stressing that the system is down and comparing with PSV abysmal situation is just naif.

Oh, to be clear, I think the Vita comparisons are dumb.

The 3DS being down is also expected. It's more interesting in the context of "This is nearing the back end of its lifecycle and there's effectively nothing filling the void." than "OMG the Vita is doing so well in comparison by this cherry-picked metric!!!"

Are the souls games big in Japan?

Are we expecting bloodborne to boost PS4 sales a lot?

Dark Souls did 368,457 and Dark Souls 2 did 335,226 on PS3.

They're not bad performers, but it's not exactly the top of the top even for PS3.

This was also a system a lot of people already had for other reasons by this point.

How on Earth can MS justify even having the Xbox One in stores with those sales?

Not that the PS4 is setting the charts on fire, far from it (the heavy hitters in 2015 should help hopefully), but ... not even a Xmas effect whatsoever for the XB...
Truly awful...

Smash's inability to move hardware must be pretty dissapointing for Nintendo :/

I think it's probably more helpful than harmful for them in the long run.

It makes it really clear that even with their absolute best efforts, their current business strategy is going to go no where, so change is necessary.

I think Vita can still sell a bit under a million this year in Jp if Sony drops the price and releases a Vita 3000 with a remake/remaster in the vein of FFX. i think surely that Vita will be around 5.5 when it's said and done before it stops selling and Nintendos next gen handheld comes out

Well yeah, I guess that's true. Enter NintendOS lol.

Then I'm guessing that Bloodbourne would realistically only sell around 200k.

According to the last thread, it looks like the Yokai Watch franchise sold 6m+ in a single year. Has Pokemon done that?

It looks like Brain Training almost did it in 2006, and I assume if you add up various Mario games it's probably happened too.

If you add all franchise games, Mario, yes:

Over 6 million:

Pokémon 1999 7,378,495
Mario 2007 7,061,525
Mario 2006 6,567,966
Pokémon 2010 6,186,505
Mario 2012 6,101,752
Yokai Watch 2014 6,051,851
Pokémon 2006 6,003,889

3rd party peak by franchise:

Dragon Quest 2004 5,252,052
Final Fantasy 1997 5,031,972
Monster Hunter 2010 4,751,157

By 1999 Pokémon was already being properly milked:

Pokémon Gold / Silver
Pokémon Pinball
Pokémon Red / Green / Blue / Yellow
Pokémon Snap
Pokémon Stadium
Pokémon Stadium (Japan)
Pokémon Trading Card Game

Let's see how Yokai Watch will be by 2016 (or if it will be).

Also, "two years" sales:

Yokai Watch / Yokai Watch 2 Ganso / Honke / Shinuchi (2013/2014): 6,338,304
Pokémon Red / Green / Blue (1996/1997): 5,659,853

I don't think that was the priority. Nintendo isn't stupid, they knew releasing the 3DS version just a few months earlier would hurt WiiU sales. They cared more about software sales in this case. If they wanted to push the WiiU then they should have released the two games in different years like they do with Mario Kart.

No idea, they are collaborating with some third parties and they saw Yokoi taking off and the Wii U failing these last year(s).. It's not a magical solution to all of their problems, but I'd be interested to see, if a compendium title on a console could potentially do something for a console like the Wii U.
I have no idea if and how much it worked for the N64 or the GCN though.

And they are working with Bandai on Pokken, so that would most likely be the replacement for the Pokemon console games of old?

As Opiate said, it depends on their growth ambitions. If they accept their place as a middle tier company, you can expect them to keep doing what they do, slowly improving things the way they know best: releasing games to increase value, hoping for a tipping point, while building necessary assets for their next handheld in the worst case.

Oh sure. It also depends on when Sony will release PS5. Still even if you take those extra couple of years off from last gen PS3 reached something like 7.5 million back in late 2011 so I don't still see why PS4 couldn't do at least 5 million with normal life span. It's not that much off from PS3s pace and it will get pretty much all the same software as PS3 did. I guess this year shows where it's heading as it starts to get some big hitters.
I can see that and my shot in the dark guess is PS4 will probably end up around N64 numbers (~5m) give or take. But taking a massive turnaround like this for granted still undersells just how disasterious the platform's debut has been. It's the worst debut of any major Japanese platform we have data for.

I'm also a bit hesitant to look at software trends from a half decade ago and assume it's a given those franchise will still maintain the same hardware moving capability. We fell into this exact trap with Wii U, which despite having essentially the same sort of lineup as Wii sold dramatically different. It's very possible that rather than lifting PS4 to mainstream heights, PS4 will simply drag these franchises (FF, KH, MGS, RE, WE, Musou, Yakuza, etc) down proportionately with it. Just like Wii U did for it's lineup (NSMB, Wii Party/Fit, Mario Kart, Smash, DKCR, Taiko, DQX, etc).

I feel like it would have been smart for Nintendo to try and get Level 5 to make a Yokoi Watch Hub / Colosseum on the Wii U.
Yo-Kai Watch Snap would be so great for Wii U. NCL could even have HAL make it.

you so bitter youkai ;)

Thanks, I made a total mess with my calculations for 1999, I don't know what happend lol

I was doing it manually with the windows calculator so I must have eaten some digits.

Edit: Other years are wrong too, I'm sorry guys. I should have checked if everything was correct, I'm usually very scrupulous when I compile sales data but today I was a bit lazy.

Probably, eventually. But it may take quite some time for the streams to cross LTD. Hell, it's still significantly behind launch aligned, isn't it?

Calling one "totally dead" while looking to the other as some kind of savior is sorta weird.

Once ff xv launches the ps4 will do a 180 in terms of sales at least that's what Sony fans believe/pray for. Hell, less than a year ago some were still saying it'd outsell the ps3.

Here we are in a sale thread so we talk about which games will help the systems or if a game will do good or not.
How can vita succeed to revenge with those niche games

Hopefully Yo-kai watch doesn't keep the model of releasing a third version only a 5 months after release of the paired versions, that could hurt the growth of the series in the long term. They should wait at least a year like Pokemon.

Also at this point if they release Yo-kai watch in the west what one are they going to release?

It's very possible that rather than lifting PS4 to mainstream heights, PS4 will simply drag these franchises (FF, KH, MGS, RE, WE, Musou, Yakuza, etc) down proportionately with it. Just like Wii U did for it's lineup (NSMB, Wii Party/Fit, Mario Kart, Smash, DKCR, Taiko, DQX, etc).
You could also say that WiiU has pretty same line up as Gamecube and it's heading towards same kind of numbers as gamecube with something like Mario Kart selling pretty much exactly like it sold on Gamecube. Wii was outlier as its success was because of appeal of motions controls and Nintendos masterful utilization of them in their games. WiiU is attracting same old audience as Gamecube and N64 did without Wii's successful gimmick (and with decline of traditional gaming market). PS4's appeal is also exactly same as PS3s. Tradional gaming with same old games.

I feel like it would have been smart for Nintendo to try and get Level 5 to make a Yokoi Watch Hub / Colosseum on the Wii U.

Nice Captain Toad numbers though - didn't believe it would ever make it to 150k and it's almost there in 2014 alone.
Deserves every sale. It's one of the most fun, easygoing, and charming puzzle games I've ever played and I'm not even that far in it. For the budget price, it's well worth it.

No it doesn't really. Gamecube didn't have NSMB, Wii Party/Sports/Fit, DKCR, Kirby, DQX, MH3, Taiko, Just Dance or other big Wii sellers. Gamecube was just a very different platform.

PS3 was also something of an outlier if we look at Japanese sales though. Despite a heavy 3rd party commitment and artifically extended lifecycle it only sold about half as well as the previous 3 PlayStations. Makes you wonder what those trends will look like this time around.

According to the last thread, it looks like the Yokai Watch franchise sold 6m+ in a single year. Has Pokemon done that?

It looks like Brain Training almost did it in 2006, and I assume if you add up various Mario games it's probably happened too.

Revised yearly Pokémon sales:

1996 - 1.663.861
1997 - 3.995.992
1998 - 4.159.875
1999 - 7.378.495
2000 - 4.346.870
2001 - 1.173.299
2002 - 3.197.762
2003 - 2.773.121
2004 - 4.523.313
2005 - 2.293.451
2006 - 6.003.798
2007 - 2.855.047
2008 - 3.489.283
2009 - 4.727.916
2010 - 6.186.505
2011 - 1.217.783
2012 - 3.806.048
2013 - 4.165.345
2014 - 3.038.599

P.S. Sorry for the wrong data I posted before. By the way, I found the culprit

Yokai Watch / Yokai Watch 2 Ganso / Honke / Shinuchi (2013/2014): 6,338,304
Pokémon Red / Green / Blue (1996/1997): 5,659,853

Well, well, well... Pokémon was really huge back in the days. That's 3 versions of the same game vs 2 games (with 3 versions for the 2nd one).

But Level-5 is just getting started. Curious to see how high YW will go, and how the gen transition will go.

This is a good week. Usually wk52 is slightly lower than wk51, but calendar placement this year has spears things out.

Should be interesting to see what increases next week.

Most comparisons are useless in sales threads because they lack context or people just nitpick numbers that fit their discourse ignoring everything else, especially numbers that contradict their discourse.

That said, 3DS situation is good and even great in some aspects, but it is not so good in other aspects. Not everything is comparison, the market is not a contest. But at the same time that some users make out-of-context comparisons between 3DS and Vita to make 3DS situation look bad, most of the times Vita is mentioned, someone comes and makes a useless comparison with 3DS as well. People who complain about nitpicking examples to make 3DS look bad also nitpick examples to support the discourse that every third party should publish every game as a 3DS exclusive.

In the end, the lack of good things to talk about reduces everything to console war stuff, and that is annoying. If things are really well, the person that earns $100,000/year won't even bother with the remark that the guy who earns $10,000/year got a bigger raise than him in the last year.

Yo-kai Watch 3 will show if the franchise has peaked or not. I'm not sure Level 5 will release it at summer again, maybe they'll wait a bit longer this time (or maybe not).
