Media Create Sales: Week 6, 2013 (Feb 04 - Feb 10)

On the first party front, I would have to assume they ran into issues transitioning to HD development.

I mean, if things were actually going totally fine with that, I feel Super Smash Bros would have never been made by Namco Bandai, and as you said we would have seen more first party titles releasing.
This is one of the most important factors that people need to consider to understand why Nintendo didn't go with a more powerful system.

The chances of increased 3rd party support wouldn't probably be much greater, but they would probably ran into a significant difficulty to make 1st party games that use the hardware to its potential, so as not to waste the capital cost people had paid to get the more powerful hardware

In Europe the official price for a Little Big Planet and a Playstation Allstars PSV bundle is 199€. There even have been a lot of commercials in December, January highlighting this price.

No, it's 199€ for the Wifi alone until whenever Sony decides (if Sony decides) to get it back up to 250€. This price drop was only until mid December, then mid January, then who knows.

Some stores in some countries are selling the bundles cheaper, but it's not an official price drop.

It seems to be with the Wifi model only as Spiegel mentioned, not regarding the game bundles. It doesnt seem to be a permanent pricedrop, however, if this is some longer time promotion that Sony has that applies to every store, i agree that it is effectively working as a pricedrop in the countries where this offer is available. It shall be interesting to see how much effect it has on the sales in longer terms.

What's this DQ event on Feb 18th everyone points to?
At this date i think that they will announce the release date of the beta, and also the release date of the final game.

So I guess my question is- does Nintendo have some sort of plan for Wii U in Japan? Or are they really this incompetent? Usually I would go with #1, but I also never thought they would release a total of one first party game after launch until April.

Iwata already apologized for having to go through this dry spell at the start of the system's life. There was definitely a plan to release software through the first half of the year, but they just aren't up to scratch yet with developing for the higher-spec system - so there's just nothing ready yet.

So yeah - until they get a grip on developing for the WiiU, it's just straight-up incompetence.

The japanese traditional consoles' market has imploded. Handheld (3DS) and nothing else. A sad trend, imo, as japanese developers will have a hard time coping with westerners' for the next round of machines. Many of them will probably divert resources to handhelds in the process...

What I find interesting/surprising is 2 of those games- Game and Wario and Wii Fit U are not exactly graphical showpieces. Especially with Wii Fit U- what could possibly be the development issues on that?

Why is this a bad thing?

It could be that those games were always planned as mid-year releases to carry the system through the spring/summer - so those games might actually be pretty much on schedule for all we know.

But Iwata went so far as to explain that the development teams just recently started coming to grips with the new hardware, which means that some (probably many) of the titles which were being worked on as far as a year or two ago went through some horrible learning curves, and only really started falling into a more regular (and productive) development cycle as recently as several months ago.

Maybe they are just waiting to launch Wii Fit U at the right time, probably late spring, when most medias focus on 'how to loose weight methods ' and people start to panic.

I'm pretty sure they expected something in line with Wii, so the platform would have been able to carry itself for some months.

Well, all we can go by is what Nintendo says, and we know that Pikmin, Wii Fit U, and Wonderful 101 were initially set to release by the end of March.

We also know Nintendo has apologized for software delays.

If we compare the 3rd party releases in terms of quantity it's even worse. However Dragon Quest and MH are bigger than anything on Vita individually.

well how about the fact that we know Nintendo is going to announce more games in the coming months for the Wii U and Sony has next to nothing. i really feel you guys are exaggerating things.

How exactly we know as a fact Nintendo is going to announce more games in the coming months for the Wii U and Sony not? Fact doesn't always go together with desire.

You can doubt anything but this is something you can't really argue. Sure third parties will announce stuff for the Vita, but their first party output will be negligible in terms of pushing the systems sales.

What's the argument? That Sony has nothing for Vita or that they have low sales potential?

We'll see soon the famous Nintendo first party output and the massive decline at software sales it will have on Wii U this generation.

3DS saw a dramatic decline wrt DS in terms of software sales, in particular first party.

well one can call it desire or simply the FACT that Nintendo isn't sitting around with their thumbs up their butts. Sony on the other hand, come on really? face it we know Nintendo is going to announce something. just because they don't do it right here right now like every impatient soul on this thread wants them to, doesn't mean that they aren't.

So, you're absolutely certain that Sony have no intention to do anything at all for the Vita?

Yet you're equally certain that Nintendo are bringing the heat and people just need to be patient?

That seems like an odd stance to take so forcefully.

In fairness Nintendo have shown with the 3DS that they can turn it around.

Yeah, no doubt, I'm not disputing that. It's just odd that someone can be completely sure that Nintendo have a bubbling cauldron full of games for the Wii-U whilst being equally certain that Sony have effectively given up on the Vita. I'd suggest that both will throw a pile of stuff at the wall to see what sticks rather than letting their struggling platforms die entirely.

FACT- Vita has been on the market in Japan for over a year and Sony has not introduced a first party game since launch that broke 100k.

FACT- Nintendo has 3 franchises currently slated for Q2 whose predecessors have sold well over 400K. Additionally, two first party launch titles have sold significantly more than any Vita first or third party title released yet.

I guess a Dragon Quest X WiiU bundle will be Nintendo's push during Golden Week

Could be. I expect Wii Fit U or Pikmin to be slotted there, but time is running short for an announcement.

how many years will Sony wait until they throw a pile of stuff at the wall?

WiiU is a only 2 months old and the competition hasn´t been even shown to public, also a some of their 1st and 2nd party studios haven´t shown their projects yet. Most of the important 3DS projects have been nearly completed, these free resources will be used for their WiiU projects (e.g. Mario Kart WiiU)

PSV over a year old, competition already released, therefore no reason to hold back. But alot of disinterest for the system from some of their 1st party studios the most noteworthy beeing NaughtyDog. Due to PS4 launch a lot of resources are used elsewhere.

Of course there will be new announcements, for example I think a God of War spin-off is likely to be announced soon, but let´s be honest their support has been tiny after a good launch. The last Nintendo Direct introduced new 3DS software while Sony has been very silent for a long while.

.

By that logic you can literally argue anything you want and apparently be taken seriously. No, we can never tell with complete, 100% certainty what a company will do before it does it, but I hardly think it is unreasonable to look at what Sony has done with the Vita for over a year, and also look at what Nintendo has for Wii U this year and conclude that Nintendo is taking the Wii U far more seriously than Sony is taking the Vita.

I'm not sure how into Japanese sales you are, but Vita's 2012 holiday lineup in Japan was the biggest pile of non-selling crap you could ever comprehend.

I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that Nintendo is likelier to throw its first-party might behind the Wii-U than Sony is the Vita. What I do think is unreasonable is this:

Of course we "don´t know" but while Nintendo has been doing several Nintendo Directs with new 3DS announcements, Sony mostly kept silent. Why should they suddenly completely change and agressively support PSV especially with the PS4 likely beeing their top priority? In my opinion it´s just wishful thinking from PSV fans.

a game that was released more than 6 months ago and already sold 650k units, how much could it push hardware ?

people who wanted to play DQ10 already bought the game in August...

look at Hokuto no Ken 2, released a month and a half after PS360, the 2nd week was already out of top30 (and #30 was around 2,5k) while PS3 version sold 3k (and PS3 version has sold more than 200k units)

Ok, we don't know it.

I think we can strongly suspect it, but ok.
It's an important distinction. You can't talk about an unannounced future with absolute certainty.

Of course we "don´t know" but while Nintendo has been doing several Nintendo Directs with new 3DS announcements, Sony mostly kept silent.
Sony don't have a monthly equivalent to Nintendo Directs with which to communicate these announcements. There's the annual 'Destination Playstation' on Feb 28th which may or may not see some announcements.

Why should they suddenly completely change and agressively support PSV especially with the PS4 likely beeing their top priority?
Because the alternative is to discontinue the device and, much as people are expecting that, I don't think it's likely yet. I don't think they'll 'aggressively' support it though, just move it up a notch from 'barely' supporting it.

In my opinion it´s just wishful thinking from PSV fans.
That would make sense, given that people want to play games. That said, I don't think suggesting that a platform holder will probably support their platform is wishful thinking.

Well, given that Sony hasn't really supported the device up until this point, and they have a new home console to launch...

You are right. The problem for the Vita is the question that even if it does have something; does it matter? Thats what it is for me anyway.

Nope. I don't think so. They have room to move some units of GT and GoW in the west but short of some unknown, unseen crazy new Japanese fad IP, that's about it. There will be no 'magic bullet' that propels the device to Japanese relevance.

Well, given that Sony hasn't really supported the device up until this point, and they have a new home console to launch...
Yeah, they have. The support they've given it hasn't shifted many units, but they have supported it.

schuelma

Yeah, they have. The support they've given it hasn't shifted many units, but they have supported it.

In any meaningful way? I mean yes, they haven't literally released zero games for it, but from a practical standpoint, especially in Japan, they have let it languish for an entire year.
