I thought I'd do a snapshot of Square Enix's mobile results as a whole on iOS.

Notes:
1.) I only used f2p apps.
2.) I took snapshots of the last 90 days (or less if there is less).
3.) I only included things that made it into the top 100 top grossing within that time period.
4.) I set equal scales (1 to 100) for all the images.
5.) I did include Record Keeper since Square Enix has revenue sharing on that.
6.) I included bolded notes of how Square Enix mentioned these games. In case it's hard to see on mobile, the first four were explicitly listed as strong performers that notably contributed to fiscal results, the fifth was listed as a good example of companion apps succeeding, and the sixth was listed as a "hit title" though in the context of highlighting a tie-in mobile game to their anime properties. I don't believe the others were mentioned, though Sangukushi Rumble started really spiking again after the last call on February 4th.

Explicitly listed as strong performers that notably contributed to fiscal results:

square2jkpkf.png

square5lqqkq.png

square39uoxz.png

square4yjrz9.png

Strong companion app (this is not a game):

square6k1o1s.png

Referred to as a hit title, though the context was to highlight them having anime adaptation success from an anime they owned:

square11mhra3.png

Not talked about, but Sangukushi Rumble went up a lot since the last call:

square760ql1.png

Games that weren't mentioned:

Legends' performance doesn't seem overwhelming.

So this week Compile Heart, Bandai Namco, and Falcom each announced one new Vita RPG title for 2015. From the sounds of it, they're all dungeon crawlers targeted at the teen anime fan audience. My take is that it shows that publishers and developers are still relatively confident of the market on the Vita for such things as long as their expectations are around 100k and under 200k. Not going to change anything for the platform, but it's not dead yet at least.

That seems the minimum effort possible towards a platform which focuses on niche games. Also, we're talking about publishers that always supported the platform, so seeing new games for 2015 is nothing special.

Games that have been announced these past few weeks have been greenlit months ago and since they target a specific small niche there was also no reason to cancel them, considering that sales could have been just in a temporary slump. The continously bad PSV sales will have an affect to actually still to be greenlit projects though unless there is a noticeable positive trend. Of course niche titles and multiplatform titles wont be affected too much for a while. This particular week it surely will look more promising due to GE2BR and the new PSV bundles.

Also, it seems that publishers are going to the safest route ever; for example, Falcom is basically developing a Persona rip-off out of its IP Xanadu, while the other two are still doing dungeon crawlers, which is a mildly successful genre on PSV.

Interesting. Actually, don't dungeon crawling genre does quite well in 3ds too? Under Etrian series. Makes me wonder why many are making them exclusive for Vita. I guess it is also because the developer is more used to Vita as Compile Heart, Falcom and the developer for Bamco game is all used to release game on Vita compared to 3ds.

191 xbones sold in the whole of japan in a month???
can anyone explain the point of M$ wasting its effort on xbone in Japan?

These are weekly figures.

MS isn't really wasting their efforts in Japan, because that'd imply that they're putting in any effort at all. :p

The Falcom title seems like they're allowing all their younger, new staff free reign over the design of this game. I'd guess the fact that they're most familiar with Vita out of all current gen consoles helps with this - the coding is no problem, so they can spend time working on everything else, and they know their games sell fine on Vita.

Experience Inc. - again, they have a lot of experience (baddum chh) on Vita and 360, and of the two Vita is the obvious choice.

And Compile Heart, that one should be pretty obvious.

Aside from Tokyo Xanadu, though, I don't think any of those games will have aspirations for 100k.

They do well, but publishers and devs wont prefer the 3DS if the sale estimates is about the same or just a little more than it would be on Vita (100-150k). Vita development means more incentives from Sony with lower licencing fees (speculation), easier development as in the possibility to port the game to PS3/PS4 and Smartphones without much effort.

3DS is dominating this generation - but when it comes to hardware and development environment between handheld and home console there is much they can learn from Sony. It still boggles my mind that they again designed system were the home console cant really benefit from the by far more popular portable they have. If you own a 3DS they should make you want to also own their home console.

Hope they learn their lesson for the next round - all games bought for the 4DS should run on their home system as well making it a no brainer purchase if you are already invested in their portable line. Of course both devices still will have their exclusives, that may only run on either one of them....but that should be the exception.

Minecraft on PlayStation has sold more than 500k in Japan across all formats (PS3, PSV, PS4): http://www.famitsu.com/news/201502/25072536.html

Sony is highlighting the Vita version, which has sold more than 200k alone, as of January 26th.

Who needs retail when you can make so much money from digital. I still think they should do a retail version though.

Also

The prediction is taking into account a whole month of sales

+ the DQ Metal PS4 copies

Also, it seems that publishers are going to the safest route ever; for example, Falcom is basically developing a Persona rip-off out of its IP Xanadu, while the other two are still doing dungeon crawlers, which is a mildly successful genre on PSV.

That´s a sign for a very narrow market. Since they have little to no experience with more successful systems in the dedicated gaming market and especially smaller publisher don´t want to cope with the added costs for training their employees for a different development environment especially this late in the generation, it isn´t that great for publishers/developers that have just a small niche to begin with, they wouldn´t likely see big returns in the short term.

Therefore they adapt accordingly by emulating the remaining or at least cheap to produce concepts, especially dungeon crawlers with enemies as 2D sprites are a comparatively a cheap option. While the Monster-Hunter clone genre is more popular than these other genres on PSV, it is by far more expensive to produce compared to most of the support we see on PSV nowadays and pretty much in the hands of bigger publishers that were able to establsh their IPs last gen or early this gen, when even Phantasy Star Nova had a hard time that also likely lead to TriAces capitulation and sell-off. It´s no surprise that they mostly chose the cheaper option instead.

it sold so well cause it was the only version available, consider the US import version probably is one of the biggest success in the recent time

Japan is retail oriented market for many reasons

I have a real feeling that everyone is overshooting DQ Heroes sales by a huge margin.
Is there any reason why you think it would sell much less than predicted? How much do you think it will sell?

Wouldnt that be a bit short time between the release of Phantasy Star Nova and the Nepro acquisition, that PSN would be a main reason for why TriAce was sold? Phantasy Star Nova was released in late November 2014, and it was announced some days ago that Nepro got TriAce. Wasnt TriAce also under contract by Sega, so they (TriAce) already got payed for their work?

I can certainly see more than 500k cumulative sales for PS3/PS4 version of DQH first week.

Whether it'll reach 1 million though..... hopefully.

I think that's a respectable opening all things considered.

Let's not forget how weak Japanese games are still doing on the PS4, because of how infrequent the releases are and even fewer exclusives. Now this is a late upressed handled port, first (I think) of it's genre on the PS4 without any sort of installed fanbase on the platform. Launched alongside a SKU on a platform that Sony worked very hard to build a strong fanbase of the genre.
