First Day Sell Through {2015.02.26}

[PS4] [PS3] Dragon Quest Heroes: The Darkness Dragon and the Castle of the World Tree <RPG> (Square Enix) - 70%

[PSV] Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru: Jukai no Kioku # <ADV> (FuRyu) - 40%

Rabbids Land

[3DS] DoraMoji: Nobita no Kanji Daisakusen <EDU> (Shogakukan) - 5%

You can guess what DQH sold since we know first day shipment.
That means Dragon Quest Heroes sold about 350,000 copies total on its first day.

For comparison, One Piece: Pirate Warriors sold 655,774 copies (Media Create), or 627,214 copies (Famitsu), on its first week.

That's a great amount. Now let's see how it can sustain its sales throughout the weekend. There are two countervailing forces here: nowadays Musou audience typically buy at launch, while the DQ audience is more casual and tends to dilute over time.

Edit: the last relevant DQ game was DQVII on 3DS; it opened at 836.654 units (Famitsu), and sold 50% of the shipiment in its first day (it was 1m, so around 500k units).

Both PS3 and PS4 versions of DQH are sold out on Amazon JP. Both have restock listed as "in 1-2 Months", though I'm sure they'll get more stock before that.

So its likely to get another shipment before next week?

So Media Create think some PSP users converted to PSV for GE2RB. I stand corrected.

"God Eater 2: Rage Burst" sold 272 thousand copies, expanding sales of Vita console

・ Total software sales were 693 thousand copies, which were 99.82% of last week.
Since popular new titles have been released since last week, software sales leveled off and a ratio of new software sales to total software sales was 50.93%, which was almost the same as 55.03% last week.
Selling 234 thousand copies, "God Eater 2: Rage Burst" for the Vita grabbed the top spot.
With its PS4 edition selling 38 thousand copies, its sales across every platform amounted to 272 thousand copies.
Although they were around 70% of initial sales of its previous installment, "God Eater 2" (378 thousand copies across 2 platforms), it can be said that the latest one got off to a sound start, given that handheld version of latest one was only for the Vita, and that it was an update edition of the previous one.

・ Total hardware sales were 112 thousand copies, which were 106.27% of last week.
Sales of the Vita amounted to 35 thousand consoles, which were pulled by the release of " God Eater 2: Rage Burst" and by the launch of 'Debut Pack.'
Its sales more than tripled to 322.94% of last week. According to retailers, many purchasers buy 'Debut Pack' with "God Eater," so it seems that these launch promoted the users' shift from the PSP to the Vita.

That's not to say I think Sony has Monster Hunter. They seemed to be under the impression that Frontier was coup for Vita ...

They think it's a coup, so it got announced randomly in a TGS stage-show stream?

The only game they've treated with the respect that a 'coup' deserves, was DQ Heroes.

Along with amazon Yodobashi run out of stock too. However many store were saying they'll replenish stock tomorrow, so we'll see about that.
Only the PS4 version is out of stock. The PS3 version is still available at all Yodobashi outlets.

Hmm... just did a quick search on Bic Camera, Yamada Denki, Sofmap and they still have stock for both versions.

I'm not expecting stock problems. Square should have ready a second shipment for tomorrow and the weekend.
I'll check Ikebukuro/Shinjuku/Shibuya's shops tomorrow.
I have things to do in Yokohama, I might check there if I have time too.

They've included Frontier in Vita bundles and have given it screen time in ads. Sony didn't roll out the red carpet for the game's launch, but it was certainly invited to the party.

They have always been posted after the 3DS list, that´s the reason. Your impatience is pretty telling. :)

I wonder why this week it was not posted yet... :)

I guess it kinda shows how bad Vita started this year.T_T As even when it get tons of help from the bundle, people just seems to have give up there.T_T

Let me know how this looks for data tracking. :p

That means Dragon Quest Heroes sold about 350,000 copies total on its first day.

For comparison, One Piece: Pirate Warriors sold 655,774 copies (Media Create), or 627,214 copies (Famitsu), on its first week.

I'm expecting a solid 450k for the first week, and 550k LTD.

So, it's gonna sell worse than Hokuto no Ken musou?

DQH no, but I'm sure Pirate Warriors 3 will.

[[PS3] One Piece: Pirate Warriors # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2012.03.01} (¥8.190) - 828.087

[PS3] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.03.20} (¥8.190) - 408.878
[PSV] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.03.20} (¥7.140) - 108.454

We'll see a similar drop for 3 likely.

Here is Vita, and a handheld comparison. Felt like just putting this all together as I already had half of the data from the 3DS tabulation. (Edit: Put everything together in a single post for reference.)

I put it well within the range of Dragon Quest spinoffs. Except Monsters, but that's almost it's own entity at this point.

If I remember correctly Dragon Quest Swords had somewhere in the range of 300k sales it's first week, and topped off under 500k.

I think my prediction is fair.

A similar drop percentage wise would put it around 300-350k LTD. Sounds about right.

First week number sounds reasonable although a bit on the low side of expectations, but its lifetime sales will definitely be much higher than that.

And this will be the end of One Piece legend? The days only its name was enough to drive video game sales last years have passed.

To be fair there were a lot of totally unreasonable expectations floating around.

Some were actually expecting this title to reach 1 million LTD.

I wouldn't be surprised if it exceeded 1 million worldwide with more than 750k sold in Japan.

1 million worldwide is a real possibility if it's advertised.

You're expecting it to more than double it's first day sales. Is there a precedent for Dragon Quest or even Musou titles to do that in Japan? I always thought that both are front loaded and generally don't have long legs.

Firstly, first day sales are not confirmed. Likely first week sales will be much higher.
Secondly, PS4 metal slime bundle will account for a number of sales on its own, approximately 50k (38k confirmed).
Thirdly, PS4 version is performing well in terms of sell through based on preliminary reports. So added to the metal slime bundle we can see that total sales of PS4 version should be good. PS3 version will sell more obviously.
Fourth, Musou game fatigue does not work on the first new IP title. In fact a new Musou IP usually shows the highest sales, example is Sengoku Musou (1060k), Musou Orochi (850k), Hokuto Musou (650k), Gundam Musou (700k) and One Piece Kaizoku Musou (860k). Only the second games show fatigue.
Five, Dragon Quest has been popular on console, especially coming back to PS and combined with action RPG and Musou elements the game has caught the attention of many gamers. Marketing has been good as well.
Six, I am optimistic.

Also, based on previous Musou trends, if first week shipment is indeed 500k then total LTD shipment should be over 730k assuming it sells like a typical Musou game in Japan. Total LTD is usually between 1.4x and 1.5x first week sales

Yeah. because it'd be the first time for a DQ spin-off to sell 1m :p

I could be totally wrong about this but I thought Dragon Quest Monsters are the only spinoffs that have hit a million in sales in Japan in modern (as in post PS1) times. Remakes are a different story.

If HyWa can reach a million, DQ should be able to with two platforms and a strong Japanese IP to bolster Japanese sales where HyWa lacked to make up the strength of HyWa in the states.

I'd be rather surprised if HyWa on WiiU WW outsold DQH on PS4/PS3 WW.

I'd be surprised too as that's very unlikely.

I meant it more in terms of the discussion you guys were having about it reaching 1M WW. As of January, HyWa had shipped 1M to retailers.

Unless I misunderstood which title you were talking about.

I'm aware of that. I was just saying that I think DQH worldwide sales will easily exceed Hyrule Warriors worldwide sales and I'd be surprised if not the case.

Apologies for confusion in my last post.

since when selling over 30k means "even with the bundle, people gave up" ?

M-C is reporting PSP users are switching to Vita, so this means they are giving up?

yes, maybe from a PSP perspective :D

Capcom is supporting two handheld markets: 3DS and mobile.

Mobile is even getting a custom made Monster Hunter game they've been working on for like 3+ years now.

The current handheld landscape in Japan is more than fine, and isn't a 1 horse race. If you want a competitive market, then we have one; if you specifically want one of those competitors to be Sony, then yeah, you're mostly out of luck.
