Media Create Sales: Week 8, 2017 (Feb 20 - Feb 26)

Wow that is a much stronger debut for Nier than I expected. Congrats to the dev team, they have to be considering this a nice success.

So, what's the official abbreviation for Switch on the sales charts gonna be? NSW?

"SWI", I believe.

Excited to see the reaction to the Switch in Japan. Lots of potential. More than anything in the foreseeable future. Devs better not fuck it up with half-assed efforts and excuses. If there isn't a Monster Hunter on it by year's end, Nintendo and Capcom will have shit the bed. There should be a Pokemon and a Youkai Watch, too, and Dragon Quest XI should come out day-and-date with the PS4 and 3DS versions though I think that's not super likely. Anyway, hold on to your butts - Media Create threads are about to see a massive spike in activity and experience a roller coaster of emotions.

10th Anniversary of Professor Layton next week. Interview with Level 5 CEO in Famitsu in regards to the series and Lady Layton. Finally time for the release date
delay?

Also should get new info on DQ11 sometime today!

Famitsu should ask about Layton 7 even though we all know it's dead.

That's the first time I hear this. Is the mecha industry facing a downward trend in terms of interest currently?

They've been failing to attract new audience for a while now, Gundam Age a few years ago was a perfect example of that.

I'm not even sure what was the last successful new IP where mecha was a huge focus since Code Geass? (2006-2008) And even that one is not mentionned in the report linked previously.

Gundam is living on its current fanbase (Unicorn, Thunderbolt, Origin) and every attempt to expand it has been a failure recently (Gundam Age, Build Fighters mostly sell gunpla, G Reco let's not even talk about it, and Iron Blood Orphan right now), Macross is barely relevant and Anno releases an Evangelion movie only every 4 years and the last one (in 2012) had less success than the second (mind almost every other IP would still like to have the same success at box office)

These days mecha is mostly there as one of the numerous bait in a random yuri/yaoi/ecchi anime

Massive spike for meltdowns and fanboy wars maybe. As if there isn't already a lot of pollution in here from the usual suspects we'll have new entries.

That's mostly because most of the new mecha anime sucks - Code Geass and Seed were the last time where I really cared about what releases next week.

Well if you don't even mention Gurren Lagann then I will have an hard time to discuss with you :(

Gundam 00 also was pretty popular both critically and commercially, maybe less than Seed but not by far.

Majestic Prince was the latest honest attempt recently, 3D CG mecha didn't help it though.
Unrelated to MJP, but if only Bones gets its shit together and put out a decent plot and no stupid fanservice maybe we would have a good mecha anime from them once again :(

Kinda off topic anyway, but that's why SRT sales are in that severe decline mostly.

Fittingly, it seems like the first Switch game to hit bomba bins will be Bomberman.

Dengeki retail software YoY

PS4: 1.869.096 (+59%)
3DS: 1.640.642 (+24%)
PSV: 616.213 (-45%)
WIU: 143.371 (-69%)
PS3: 52.756 (-89%)
XB1: 5.551 (-12%)

3DS and PS4 aren't making up for losses, due to that we're down by 5% as a whole.

Last week was the biggest week for PS4 for the year so far, it should stay above the 3DS until Monster Hunter XX is out.

Did they ship 200k copies or something?

One day before release, these are the COMGNET numbers for Switch games

  • Zelda - 206+63 = 269
  • 1 2 Switch - 135
  • Mario Kart - 46
  • Bomberman - 32
  • DQ - 30

How do they compare against Wii U (Mario, Nintendo Land), and Wii (Twilight Princess, Wii Sports and Wii Play)?

I missed this thread completely, I was not expecting those Automata sales. My baby is all grown up and selling well, tear. I remember how disappointed I was after finishing the original Nier, and thinking that there wouldn't be anything like it again - and now there is Automata.

Hey, Square, howza 'bout that Nier remaster/remake... or a Taro YouTube web series...

my god, what i would not give for that, or atleast SE giving him his own team to do stuff with a decent budget and technical capabilites, look what he can do with a mid level Platinum budget and not the table scraps SE had been giving Cavia and Access games on top of being inferior coding developers

Yeah, what Taro has done with so little over the years has been impressive - very creative with very little. I'd be fascinated to see what he'd do with more budget and breathing room.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Wait, did anything come up about the shipment after all or is it due to the reviews?
Also, Bomberman is actually sold out on Amazon.co.jp right now, and it's been the same for several hours now. Strangely, not the first Amazon region-specific store where it happened: it's selling out in different countries.

So are you saying there is a chance Konami sells the initial shipment(3rd largest out of the launch games) in the first two months or am I living in an alternative reality?

Anyhow Switch is trending in Japan - 307k which I don't know if it's good or bad

Sooo many Switch lol.^^ And that shipment number seems a bit small? Won't this be totally sold out there.O_O

That is a bigger first week shipment than I expected. In fact, are we sure that is the first week shipment number...? It's just a random number on the box.

If Nintendo is only releasing 2M Switch into the wild for launch then that is a massive amount of the stock right there.

Yeah, it's the code of the product. It's not the shipmet, that should be 400k at very most.

Btw, it's 1:30pm in Japan. There are some little stores reporting out of stock, or delivering problems, only available for reserved units.

Restocks are a thing... 500k available first week wasn't going to happen. Japan will probably get in the ball park of 600k for the whole month depending on world wide shipment allocations.

in japan? ps4 just recently outsold wiiu after nintendo pulled the plug

We saw it coming long before it happened.

It will probably be the same for Switch vs PS4, Switch LTD number might only surpass PS4 in 2019 but we could know that it'll happen as early as this year.

We knew from the start that the PS4 was gonna have a much longer life cycle than the Wii U. It was virtually impossible for the PS4 to sell less than that in its lifetime. The question was always how long it would take the PS4 to catch up with the Wii U, but there was no question that it was going to happen. It was interesting-ish during the holidays but that's about it.

Given the lack of launch window competition, bomberman may have found footing. I wouldn't bomba title it yet. Nintendo fans also have a soft spot for character nostalgia, its the only game to offer certain experiences on switch for sometime... I don't think much of konami but it wasn't the worst gamble to make.

Definitely, but that's a symptom from finally having an interesting competition after so many years. 3DS vs. Vita and Wii U vs. PS4 weren't exactly nail-biters. Those battles were won very quickly. Switch vs. PS4 should be much more interesting for much longer.

There is nothing unpredictable for PS4. It will end where it looked from the beginning, like almost all systems before. Switch vs. PS4 isn't anything special. Everything will be clear by the end of the year if there will actually be a battle or not.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
The main difference is that I can see PS4/Switch benefiting from each other where the other systems didn't share much of their library.

Next Tales of, SMT, Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest and co. could all be developed while targeting both systems. PS4 already has the user base and the higher quality experience for a homesystem why Switch will be the option for people who wanna have console games on the Go as well.

This year will be really important in terms of console gaming. Hope the publishers don't mess it up and follow the DQXI blueprint.

GamesMaya's report says more or less what we already know. Top 3 games are:

1. Zelda Breath of the Wild
2. 1-2-Switch
3. Bomberman R

Console sold out. Accessories as well.

So remember when Platinum said they would also be working on mobile games going forward when Lost Order was announced?

I noticed that their producer at Nintendo is now with the mobile division, so I wonder if they're helping Nintendo with a mobile game as well.

(This is about Fire Emblem Heroes)

Mr. Shinko Matsushita

The director on the Nintendo side. He headed games such as the Fossil Fighters series, The Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 2. He is attached to the Smart Device Production Group. This is his first involvement with Fire Emblem.

Mr. Kouhei Maeda

Director of Intelligent Systems –the company behind the development of the Fire Emblem series. He has been involved since Binding Blade, and served as director of New Mystery of the Emblem, Awakening, and Fates.

And we still have Persona 5 coming out too.

Holy shit, this really is the year where Japanese niche developers, publishers and games have their breakouts into the mainstream. What a return to form.

I think as there are a lot less major games in general these days, and the ones that exist are more similar to each other, there is more room for other approaches.

Digital distribution helps here as well, since these games can actually get tail end sales that would have been lost in the 360/PS3 era.

509.600 shipment confirmed.

But that's 5 096 001 units, not 509 600! Switch to have best launch ever in Japan CONFIRMED.
Not

I think it's just a coincidence. Based on the games he worked on, I'm gonna assume Matsushita was at SPD, which dealt with the external 1st-party projects, which is why he ended up working with PG in the first place. I don't think his joining the mobile division is related to PG.

Could totally be wrong though, but that's just my 2 cents on the matter.

Speaking of mobile, first major event for Fire Emblem Heroes starts on Monday, and last one week. It's the Princes vs Princesses Voting Gauntlet event.

Curious to see how that one will go.

That's not their producer at Nintendo. Hitoshi Yamagami is the Nintendo producer who oversees all the game titles outside of Nintendo's traditional wheelhouse, whether it's first party or third party. He's the guy to watch for. This other guy is just one like 5-6 Nintendo director/producers who are assigned to work with partner studios. Means absolutely nothing.
