Media Create Sales: Week 9, 2017 (Feb 27 - Mar 05)

This gonna be a long post
(mostly because there are pics)
, so I hope you read it.

I need to start with this week's releases, and especially Ghost Recon. The game as the first sellthrough shows is actually a ghost nowhere to be seen. There will be some re-stock tomorrow, though. Kingdom Hearts also sold well, and 2.8 moved some units alongside.
Xsux8YE.jpg

kzcBTuc.jpg

Yesterday was the Miku no Hi, so Miku games were everywhere.

Now, Switch.

Regarding Switch, the console is nowhere to be found, and the worst part is that stores don't really know a date for new shipments nor how many units they will have. The few stores that are accepting pre-orders closed the Neon ones, only Grey are available for reservations. About Zelda Switch, Rakuten says there will be a new shipment in six days. So, a big drop is expected, at least retail-wise. The game also moved Zelda related amiibo, that of course are sold out.

And finally, pre-orders...

Monster Hunter and Mario Kart are available to pre-order at every store and big ads are displayed as well. The space dedicated is increasing each day.

There is space for Mario Sports and Fire Emblem as well.

A couple of questions.

1. Will I am Setsuna and Disgaea 5 hit bottom prices soon?

2. How would one go about getting my hands on one of those?
Don't know about 1. but for 2. you can order from online stores like Amazon.co.jp, AmiAmi and Lawson HMV. I am Setsuna is sold out on all 3 stores though, probably due to foreigners importing LOL.

Why is the abbreviation for Nintendo Switch "NSW"? I kept reading it as "NSFW".

Glad to see Switch is doing great out the door. Can't wait to play it once all my accessories come in and I finished with Horizon.

Seems like this holiday will be a mix bag for Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony. I think Microsoft will win NA with Scorpio and bundled XOne S. Sony will win EU and Nintendo will win Japan. Sony will probably have the most consoles sold worldwide.

Loving this trend that's been going on lately of PS4 software over performing. That's a really positive sign for its health

Saturday should be the day of restocking nationwide.

If Nintendo hasn't raised forecast for March there won't be more than 200-250k available for next 4 weeks.

Bundles only make a difference for Xbox One and Wii U.

Knack isn't included though.

Guess that explains why the ratio is so high for XB1 (that and the fact only hardcore fans bought it).

I boggles my mind that Minecraft has no release date yet. Absolutely the perfect portable title that could sell well and be ported quickly.

It doesn't boggle anyone's mind, Minecraft is a massive game with years of content, and that's continuously updated. It's not a trivial thing to port it, hell, even the PS4 and Xbox One didn't get it before September 2014.

Even if Nintendo provided assistance for development (and there's no doubt they are helping), it's not something that's going to happen in a couple of months. They've already announced Minecraft is coming, now to wait. I could see the Switch version releasing sometime in December, if it goes well.

Fairly certain they won't announce a revised forecast until close to the FY results, but shipments for the Switch have probably been increased already. Don't think we're looking at Famicom-mini level of shortages.

I guess that's all true. I just see Minecraft on every device imaginable and it stuck in my mind that it must be easy to port. Especially since the Switch has more shared architecture than say the WiiU. But yeah, I will concede that I am wrong on that one.

Well, it's on so many devices because it's extremely popular. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up as the best-selling game of all times, if it's not already (as in: single game, not series/franchises). Though obviously, the continued support with new content makes comparison with other games a bit unfair.

I wouldn't be totally surprised if the Switch hovers around 40-50k sales for the next few weeks due to smaller shipments before a significant shipment comes in for Mario Kart in April.

Minecraft would be nice to have for the Summer for Switch, but I don't see it happening until mid-Fall at the earliest.

Has Monster Hunter kind of recovered in preorders? It looks like it might not be the huge decline we were originally expecting.

Figured I might as well post it now, now that things have calmed down a bit. List of confirmed retail games for the Nintendo Switch:

I purposefully left out vague stuff like Tales of or Blazblue, just keeping 100% confirmed games/projects (announced as such, like Fire Emblem which is a specific project, not just "we're brining FE to Switch").

Oh, and that reminds me... why the hell hasn't Atlus revealed their new SMT game for the 3DS yet?
Thank you. Do you have any such list for PS4 releases too? Just want to check if there is any draught of software for PS4 coming?

I hope it doesn't, because I want it to sell like crazy and inspire more games like it.

I'd prefer a lot more Project Octopath to sell well and Bravely to come back for a third main game tbh...
That said, I don't doubt it will do decently for a late port of a game with smallish budget.

I mean, I'd love all of those as well.
In addition to Project Setsuna also doing well.
There's no reason that one precludes the other.

Hoping for a game to bomb and be in discount bins, though, doesn't seem overly productive to seeing future games like it.

Oh no I agree on this.
Hoping for a game to bomb is the worst, even if you don't like a specific game. An healthy industry is good.

The local store here at Kasaoka just got a box full of switches (Not that big, about 8,it seemed?) , managed to grab one and Zelda, going to work for a bit and then play with the GF.

They had it behind the counter away from prying eyes so I had to ask, they had both grey and neon. It was a bit embarrasing trying to purchase it with my poor Japanese, but worth it.

Score!

Bic Camera Kyoto Station was selling Switch today by lottery. I grabbed a ticket, came back at 12 for the drawing, and didn't get picked. Was a little bummed, but not a big deal. There was about a hundred people in line for tickets at 9 AM (we were numbers 58 and 59) and they only got 18 systems (12 gray, 6 neon).

My wife and I went to lunch nearby in the food court at Yodobashi Camera. After lunch, she asked if I wanted to check there. I figured that there was no chance in hell, but it's fun to look so I stopped by anyways.

They had them! I was just in time to get one of the last grey ones. Don't know how many they got of each model, but neon was sold out. They were out of Zelda, but Bic had a bunch of those, so I'll go grab it tomorrow. Did get Puyo Puyo Tetris though and I Am Setsuna.

Hmm I agree, but I'm saying if Nintendo just trickles supply in over the coming weeks it won't have that smooth downward trajectory that most consoles have in the weeks following launch. It may have more of a steep drop and then a Great Plateau at around 40k until they fully meet initial launch demand with supply. It was just a thought, hard to say without seeing their shipment plans for the next few months.

Let's hope Resident Evil 7 does above expectations for Capcom else they'll have 3 underperforming games for their FY.

On average YSO expects less than a million units for Monster Hunter XX' first week, with that shipping two million becomes really difficult, unless they stuff channels, risking bomba bins or if the game really clicks with people like the original game did.

Even so, it should be the worst first week for the series on 3DS since 3G.

I expected MHXX to have the worst sale among its handheld titles. I'm sick and tired of playing MH on a crappy 3DS hardware so XX might be the first MH I skip.

What's with the expected fall off of MH sales in Japan? I haven't followed the MH series myself, or talk since MHXX announcement, but is it case of this not being a full sequel, with not enough new stuff and people getting tired of it being restricted by the 3DS specs?

The question is what the shops feel as those carry the risks when they order too many units. Capcom could limit the shipment (but would be stupid to do so), the only thing they could stuff is their own channels (do they have an own web store?).

Monster Hunter peaked in 2010 and this is the fifth traditional hunting release on 3DS, which is one more than PSP got.

Well, it's a new version of a spin-off (technically, MHX isn't a mainline game), releasing a few days after a new console, on a slowly dying system. They haven't added enough content to really excite people about it.

Regarding being a spin-off, isnt the game catering to the exact same crowd as the other Monster Hunter games? Kinda like how Call of Duty Black Ops was a spin-off of Modern Warfare?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

While this is true...those CoD games still were completely new titles and not just +/G versions of the game they had before and Activision releases the games for the new systems asap.

With MH everyone knows that a big jump and the 5th generation is happening soon - only the most hardcore fans will jump on another 3DS release at this point.

I dont know Capcom plans when it comes to MH right now - but XX seems like a poor money grab tbh - especially after many players already were pissed that they didnt offer some kind of update/dlc option from MH4 to MH4G. Guess they are milking the market as long as possible.

3DS is at the end of it's lifespan it's launching in the same month as said systems successor while not being on said system with a decent chunk of the most active userbase moving on. Capcom were complete idiots. Even a cheap port would have stemmed some of the loss with the prospect of longterm sales both in Japan and worldwide being a launch title.

MH consistently ships 4.1 million per entry. Capcom is now about to break that trend.

I'm really afraid on how they are gonna handle the next mainline title.

I'd be very worried. Capcom is exceeding good at fucking up a sure thing. Even the fraking wii u port managed to ship a few hundred thousand. A switch port would have at least managed that lifetime even if capcom were never planning on supporting the platform again beyond that entry it makes little sense.

XX's sales will show that people are bored of portable entries and they need to refocus on the west.:p

That will litterally be capcom's takeaway from this and then they'll proceed to bomb the franchise.

Basically this, I wouldn't read too much into this.
XX on Switch at the same time would have been way smarter. Wouldn't be surprised if some are just waiting at this point for next announcements.

Sure, i was thinking of MHX, not XX :) XX will indeed sell less due to being an updated version and not a brand new game.

107%? ..more games sold compared to those distributed? :O

I think that's 107% software compared to hardware. Hardware was around 330K right?

I think the right message to take from MHXX if the predictions are correct is that the Japanese market is slowly getting sick of the expansions. It sounds like from the comments above MHXX didn't really add all that much. On the other hand, a spinoff, like MHX can do well by itself if you try something pretty different (since it actually brought in some MH3P players that MH4G/U didn't). At the same time, selling like 1 million copies from an expansion is pretty crazy and might still be making a decent amount of money.

That is basically the attach rate of software to hardware.

More software than Hardware was sold so the rate is higher than 1:1.

It's hard to get excited about 3DS games anymore. The switch is more than a generation ahead of the 3DS and is just a much more awesome piece of HW. Surely everyone is expecting the announcement of games like MH moving to the switch and that has to take some excitement away from future 3DS releases.

I'm curious when announcements will start coming in for the switch. Obviously E3 is a few months away so that's the obvious answer but im hoping for something before then.
