Mel Gibson’s New Pro-Police Brutality Movie Is Crazy Racist

And it looks hella frickin lit fam

There’s arguably nothing the world needs less right now than Force of Nature, a movie starring Mel Gibson and Emile Hirsch as trigger-happy cops with violent pasts and take-no-prisoners attitudes who are tasked with rescuing a Black man, a rookie Latina officer, and a Nazi descendant (and his stolen artwork) from evil Puerto Rican villains during a Category 5 hurricane in San Juan. What would be tasteless retrograde nonsense at any other time resounds during this particular moment in U.S. history as almost cataclysmically tone-deaf and insulting, turning director Michael Polish’s thriller (on VOD June 30) into the year’s most misbegotten venture.

Force of Nature is a fantasy about misogynistic Caucasian cops (Ray “doesn’t exactly respond to female authority,” Pena quickly learns) with a predilection for using supposedly justifiable extreme force. That alone makes it an objectionable genre exercise. Yet on the heels of 2017’s Hurricane Maria tragedy, the material’s exploitation of a fictional Puerto Rican hurricane for cheap and contrived white-savior thrills pushes it into the realm of ugliness. Considering that state of affairs, the narrative’s subsequent rancid turns aren’t surprising. For example, Griffin confesses that he moved to Puerto Rico after winning a financial settlement against the NYPD for unjust harassment, bought a voracious pet (kept behind locked doors) that he’s trained to attack cops, and now feels guilty for taking that “blood money” in the first place. The suggestion, it’s clear, is that Black Americans know that police brutality is fake, and that any compensation for it is thus unearned.

Looks good, I'll watch it.

As a minority speaking, what, are bad guys or characters that need rescuing never supposed to be minorities in US movies again? Do these writers think there aren't criminal elements in Puerto Rico? Were they supposed to be Italians in San Juan or something? No one has an unruly old father? Really? It makes no difference if his child was male or female.

PC shit is out of control man.

After finally watching Dragged Across Concrete and loving it, I did spot this other Mel Gibson movie and it's on my list. Hate him all you want for his insane antics off screen, but this guy can carry a fucking movie.

Dragged Across Concrete was great, but totally different class of director -- S. Craig Zahler, who did Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99 -- compared to this one. This guy's filmography is a long list of stinkers.

It’s not hard to carry crap.

He has released crap for 10 plus years. This will be shit and flop (like everything he has touched in the last 10 years).

They really aught to start calling people who write crap like that what they actually are: Fun Police. There's always some round about argument about how something is offensive. This is like the inverse of the 90s and the youth have turned into the moronic commentators on talk shows discussing how Marilyn Manson influences kids to form death cults and anything that isn't pure and clean is awful.

You should really watch Dragged Across Concrete. And also check out Get the Gringo. Gringo isn't winning any Oscars or anything, but it's a really solid movie with Mel doing his thing.

Remember when Mel Gibson was considered a very good actor?

He's at Van Damme/Steven Segal level now.

And this movie looks enjoyably shitty.

Mel is an antisemitic ahole, but I really hate these SJW's.

He's got my money though.

I hope this ends up making a gazillion dollars in backlash but it looks like an Aslyum movie so it will probably crash and burn.

Conspiracy Theory talk, Mel never got put into Hollywood jail for the drunk comments. Those were a means for something else, I always thought he got put into jail for opening up about Hollywood.

Ironically this interview was for the movie Conspiracy Theory lol. I know there's edits in the vid but it makes you wonder what Mel was being so vague about......................

Movie looks like it could be a porno.

What was racist about it? Mel Gibson is a pretty racist old kook though.

Can't imagine actually believing or caring about the kind of shit he does.

Hacksaw Ridge was a boring shitpile disappointment after I loved POTC (I'm not religious but I love the movie) and Apocalypto. I thought they were both incredible. Hacksaw Ridge was such a fucking let down for me.

This movie looks like there could be a porn version of it.

I notice that nearly any actor ends up doing movies like these after a while. Even people considered the greatest end up going for straight to video type movies these days, it's kinda crazy.

Not a fan of Mel for obvious reasons but in a vacuum this would probably be a successful movie. Right now, though, seems like really bad timing.
