Raid Mode is indeed a lot of fun, especially the expanded Rev2 version. I put dozens of hours into that, both solo and with a pal.

That said, it's more of a long-form kind of leveling up type of experience. There's something to be said for Mercenaries' more pure "no upgrades, just go for the best score/rank possible" approach, and RE4's general mechanics and design are still second-to-none in the series, IMO.

They're both great. One is more of a longer progression across missions with upgrades and junk, the other is pure arcade goodness.

Raid mode in Rev 1 was very good, I didn't liked the Rev 2 version.

Battle mode on saturn was a fun ride too, Zombie Wesker and gold tyrant was a huge surprise.

My favorite mode by far is extreme battle on RE2 dualshock version.

Raid mode is fun at first but then it becomes extremely easy and grindy at the same time. I didn't play the raid mode from Revelations 1 but Revelations 2's raid mode isn't good at all because:

1) Player's skills are secondary. What matter the most is how powerful your guns are;
2) getting better guns is easy, the shop refreshes after every mission;
3) there's no punishment for dying. I used to kill myself on purpose to respawn with full health and ammo. Signing on RE.net made things even easier since you can get free respawn points;
4) you have to upgrade each character individually. It's a gridan fest;
5) It doesn't help that, despite being released after RE6, Revelations 2 combat mechanics are worse. Enemy design too. It felt like an involution.

So no, Raid isn't better than Mercenaries. But Mercenaries isn't the best extra mode either because Onslaught exists. Now that is Mercenaries on crack!

Apples and oranges. I play mercenaries for fast paced turbo-masculine testosterone action. You gotta go fast and work with the loadout of your unique character.

Most of the differing opinions on which side mode is best in RE here are all correct, Mercs, Raid, etc. are all fun in their own rights! Don't forget The Mercenaries 3D, game is a literal blast to play in quick sessions solo or co op on the 3DS!

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D was an interesting Resident Evil game that def wouldn't make it on the best Resident Evil games list...but was still a legit fun Nintendo 3DS game that turned the RE formula more into an arcade gameplay experience! and now it has a big upgrade in the form of brand new mods and texture packs that are absolutely worth checking out until Resident Evil Requiem releases!
