Meta GAF |ON| Gaf on Gaf

I just don't see the point. You can easily ignore them if you want to as is. All the ignoring threads concept would do is foster an echo chamber for specific users. Something GAF does not need to become again.

Again, the point is just to have more threads you may care about on the front page. It's not making anything an echo chamber as I'm already, as you note, "manually" ignoring threads that disinterest me by not opening them. I'd just like to have them not taking up real estate on the first page so I'm more likely to see less trafficked threads that do interest me show up on the first page. People who want to participate in threads aren't going to ignore them. It will have no impact on the level or type of discourse. There was no change on Era when they enabled it and their staff was resistant to it for this type of reason before finally relenting and then realizing there's really zero downside to having the option enabled for users.

If anything the ignore user feature (which is enabled) can lead to more echo chamber mentality as people can just ignore people they disagree with and thus have no chance to see their posts and debate them from time to time. Vs. ignoring threads which is generally just getting rid of clutter than the member was never going to post in anyway.

I'd advise just enabling it (assuming it's not a lot of work). Can always turn it off if there is some decrease in debates. But I just don't see it as people aren't going to hide threads they want to read and post in!

We, the mods and admins, have gone back and forth on the subject of setting up a system that would allow users to ignore individual threads.

The reason we have so far landed on the "no" side of the debate is we're worried it would foster the creation of an environment on GAF that could become very insular. We want people's ideas and viewpoints to be potentially challenged and we don't want to create a system where someone sees a new Xbox thread (or Trump thread, or boob thread, or whatever) and has the ability to instantly and permanently dismiss it and remove it from view without consideration.

Like all things, we're open to discussion on the matter.
For me, it would be primarily used for ignoring threads in the gaming forum that fall on the 'political' side of things. I would just prefer to read and talk about games. The latest thread about some other outrage thread regarding the bra size of some mutant in Mortal Kombat 27 doesn't interest me. Unfortunately, those are the sort of threads that hang around for weeks and go 20 pages.

Agreed. And it contributes to game OTs for less popular games failing to gain any traction as they can't stay on the front page very long. I'm not naive to think having ignore threads will fix that--it's going to take getting more members who play more than just the biggest AAA games and more members who want to talk games and not social/political issue and outrage in gaming. But at least I can hide that crap and be more likely to see OTs, news threads etc. on the front page that get fewer posts before dropping into oblivion.

I would also add, I have put at least 2 users on ignore just to get rid of the threads they started cluttering up my page. Neither did anything wrong, so I may be missing out on other interesting threads / posts by them, through no fault of their own. Yeah, I know, I could just ignore the threads but it gets tiresome after a while.

Perhaps I'm just a grumpy old man.

I mean, if the person in question is female and hetero or male and homo, why would the person not dismiss a boob thread right away - and permanently? Using the feature in a sensible way is everyone's own responsibility. I guess quite a few people would also like to have such an option for semi political threads on the gaming side ("Anita is broke", "game censorship" and so on).

Cease this lewdness at once!!!

That tweet is lowkey going to be the biggest source of referrals to GAF

But lol, showing some skin is not ‘borderline porn’.

A few butt slaps aside there is no physicality between people in those thresds, which is kinda a requirement for porn. Not to mention no genitalia. It’s just scantily clad women with fortunate physiques. Literal rape. Ableism. Transphobic.

I think you've made a good argument in favor of ignore thread option, which is something I was against in the past.

Sometimes I participate in a thread once or twice and then I'm not interested in revisiting it. But I keep getting notifications for it. So, I have to manually disable the 'Watch' for that thread. Yes, I can always select whether or not to watch the thread when I first reply, but I want to watch the thread when I first participate. I'm interested in it, but maybe I lose interest in time. I would hate for the Watch feature to be removed even though it's annoying to manually disable it.

I try to keep my watched threads "clean" because when I get notifications, I don't want a bunch of spam that I have to gloss over. I've missed notifications for quotes, mentions, and emoji reactions when my notification bar gets too cluttered. Turning off Watch for an active thread that I'm not interested in anymore means I don't get spammed by notifications. Any Likes or quotes from the un-Watched thread will show up in my feed anyway.

If I had an extra way to declutter (no offense intended to the clutter) the front page, I would read more new threads because they'd be easier to see. Sometimes the front page is crammed with several similar threads on one particular game or one particular brand (often following a gaming conference). There are topics that I'm simply not interested in, so it'd be nice to ignore them and tailor the front page more to my personal interests.

That's a gigayikes from me, dawg. Not sure exactly what a libertarian socialist is unless that's some pathetic attempt at an ironic joke :messenger_tears_of_joy: They look more like gender commies to me.

It’s just an idiot that think pics of scantily clad women are porn. Smh.

I did hide the butt and tits thread as I browse a ton on my work computer and don’t want to accidentally click them and have it in my history. Did that a couple times already and had to clear history. But they’re a far cry from porn, just NSFW and not something I’d bother viewing at home when I can, ya know, watch actual porn. :messenger_beaming:

Thanks for the Ignore Thread feature.

But um is it necessary to also have the "also Ignore User" option? Feels like I'm being put in a narrative where I'm getting annoyed with the TC so everytime I put a thread on ignore I'm like:

Can’t say I’ll miss them. Too much fanboy, console warring nonsense on the gaming side and they were one of the worst.

Idk man, use the ignore features. I can remember laughing at a lot of his posts, and also rolling my eyes too, sure. I just rarely feel good about a regular being told never to come back.

Oh I long had them on ignore. But that doesn’t help when they derail threads with console warrior nonsense as others engage and the thread is ruined.

I’m disappointed with how much of the surge in activity in gaming is console warrior crap. Hopefully it’s just growing pains, but it sucks how so many game OTs sink like stones and even something like Mario Maker can’t stay in the front page consistently when their could/should be an active community sharing levels (I’m not a creator type unfortunately so I can’t help with that).

It may just be what it is. The internet has just gotten more and more argumentative and negative as time has gone on. It’s tough to find active communities who just enjoy whatever hobby and have fun chatting about it with like minded people instead of constantly bitching about the hobby and getting into heated arguments.

They were given multiple chances and routinely ignored them just to continue being a right ass. Good riddance.

Not liking all the “good riddance” sentiments about people who can’t respond. Man up and speak your mind when they’re here or don’t say anything at all. Insufferable pricks are part of life anyway and dealing with them is a forgotten life skill these days. Instead, everyone just wants to complain and cancel. Sometimes you just need to toughen up and learn how to deal with them. Worst case, you can always put them on ignore, though I think that’s bitch mode. An even better approach is to mock them because then you get to put them in their place and have fun in the process.
