Portable Ops isn't canon anymore?

As soon as Kojima came back for MGS4 it was shunted in to a weird "we're not going to explicitly say it didn't happen but we're not going to refer to it anymore either" space.

Really it set up Big Boss getting the idea for Outer Heaven well enough that I don't think he needed any more games, but Kojima painted himself in to a corner with Old Snake and seems to have a hard-on for Big Boss so here we are anyway with Peace Walker and now Phantom Pain.

Metal Gear stories are stupid and campy enough that paying too much attention to canon is kind of silly anyway. That's my only concern with MGS5 really, is that Kojima seems to be reaching outside his abilities as a writer and it's going to try to take itself too seriously.

PO is rarely acknowledged because Kojima didn't write it. But he wrote the basic story, said that he didn't allow MGS4's story to be finalized without it (likely The Patriots shit). It's still canon, but treated like a footnote. The official timeline acknowledges it, but very vaguely along the lines of "Big Boss forms FOXHOUND to hunt down the FOX Unit", even though this was the original plot (lines from Zero which were present in an early trailer) and the final game was quite a bit different.
