Metal Gear Solid:Twin Snakes Depreciation Thread

Twin Snakes would be even better if it had the analog D-pad that MGS2 uses (MGS games are to be played with the D-pad IMFO, but the GC D-pad is way too small so I was forced to use the analog stick). I prefer Twin Snakes to the original as well. 2 is my fave of the series.

Speaking of which - the D-pad on the GC pad is not analogue - how do you walk/run with the D-pad?

I remember getting quite frustrated with the analogue "draw, put away" weapon on PS2, and preferred the GC control for that. I managed much better on my revisit to MGS2, both in using the D-pad analogue, as well as the buttons. But still avoided them when I could. Clever, but I still think all the analogue buttons on the DS2 are pretty worthless.

Im sick of talking about Twin Snakes, but yeah get MGS3. You may want to wait for Subsistence come out though, especially if it's $29.99 (current price on Ebgames/Gamestop)

And just in case anyone wants to know, MGS1 > Twin Snakes
And MG2:SS> all the 3d ones. It is sad that the series has deevolved into a daytime soap opera.

How are the games in MGS1-3 even similar to soap operas? There is little love and romance at all? What the fuck.
In the 15 mins that I watch 'soaps' while in the break room (I am surrounded by maids :() I have yet to see any love and romance. Only twisted storys and anger... and poorly written dialogue.

Ironically, that's Toledo's mascot. They call it "Rocky the Rocket." It just happens to look like a dildo -- it's a coincidence, really

Take any aspects inherit in a game and overstate/exaggerate than need be in a comparision to make point.

Even if they were the case (which it isn't), the 3D games destroy the 2D games when it comes to gameplay.

You guys are actually telling me you 'like' the story in the Solid series? Did you like Kill Bill too? SSX, do not answer that. Your avatars speak for you.

There is nothing in the Solid series that comes close to the tap codes.

I remember you saying you have not even played that MSX game. Why do you say such things?

i liked it better than MGS2 and never played the original.

It was fun and entertaining, though confusing (the whole Fox-Die thing still makes little sense to me). Im sure someones already brought up the storyline in 2, but thats what broke the game for me. If you are going to have hours of unplayable plot vehicles, you better atleast make that plot comprehendable

It'll be very interesting to see what series noobs think of MG and MG2:SS when/if they grab Subsistence.

Metal Gear was one of my favorite NES games. I even liked Snake's Revenge, even though I had a buggy copy (game froze constantly).

Kon Tiki, tell me what the problems were in MGS3's story for you.

It was comprehendable, you just had to pay attention.

Twin Snakes rocks.

The voice acting was better in the original, but the music is better in Twin Snakes. The graphics are better in Twin Snakes, but some added scenes are a little over the top (though it's not too bad). There should have been more new content and the VR Missions were taken out wtf.

But I had more fun with Twin Snakes than MGS2, to be honest. Twin Snakes is not "broken", stop it. It's a fucking great game on its own and an above average remake (it was just missing some stuff).

I hope a mod changes your name to "I <3 Terrible Things."

The problem with MGS3 is that it tries to forget that the gameplay system in the MGS series is nothing more than a glorified game of Pacman. There are plenty of better sneakers out there. The bosses are worth experiencing though, and the CQC system is fun to fool around with.

Edit: In terms of plot, well... Hideo Kojima needs editor badly. I guess somebody shot the editor.

When you get right down to it, any stealth element in any game is glorified Pacman.

You really are a jackass. Please don't act like your opinion is fact in every thread.

I like Twin Snakes. It got good reviews. You saying it sucks does not make it fact. Go to bed.

Don't take it personally. He dresses up as moogles.

The picture of ol' shrub really cements it for me.

I will feel guilt in getting misty eyed at the end of MGS3, and learn that a real man only gets misty eyed if his machine gun's magazine runs empty. Any attempts to inject a bit of heart-felt humanity into a series, however cliched, will be compeltely quashed, and I will play nothing but BLACK, where BULLETS ARE THE STARS!!!!!!!!! or HALO PC to drain my soul of any emotion or vigor or humanity.

I will learn to love the cutscenes of TTS, sitting teary eyed with a sternly drawn two-fold saluting hand across my eyebrow, imagining that *I* could be kicking the communistic missile out of America's air space.

I will learn to renounce enjoying the plot of MGS2 because it veered away from giant exploding robots for a few seconds to focus on mysterious agendas. Any plot that makes us say "what the hell"? is only a few steps removed from "What the red?", e.g., bad. I will immolate myself for my impure thoughts for enjoying a story line that didn't spoon feed me every detail and foreshadow every plot twist.

In Shrub I trust.

You know, I hear people whine and whine about how unrealistic TTS' cutscenes are, but I just finished MGS3 for the second time and I'll be damned if
Snake shooting an RPG at falling debris to save Ocelot
is any more realistic. TTS didn't live up to the hype because of the unbalanced gameplay and lack of any added content. That said, it's great to see MGS get a facelift, but it doesn't do enough things better than the original to make up for that inbalance, and that it's like six years late. Good to play along with the original, but not in place of.

LIES! Obviously you live in a universe where it's night when it's day over here, and vice versa. I've heard legends of such anomalies but never thought them to be true. We're through the looking glass, people.

demi, danthrax, you both are great people and make Ohio a great place to be. But neither one of your universities comes up to Kent State. Well, except Bowling Green for parties, since half of KSU goes down there for booze and pussy.

But still.

Here's what I had to say when I played it a while back.

Playing Metal Gear Solid the Twin Snakes after playing the original, which it was based on, you realize that it is exactly what it claims to be - a north american remake of a Japanese hit. While the graphics are better you just feel like you've lost something. Cut scenes range from over the top to downright silly, whereas the original they were all very cool. Music once that once melded into the gaming experience now shouts out "HEY! CAN YOU HEAR ME?! I'M THE BACKGROUND MUSIC!!!" Voice overs have been dumbed down (gone is Mei Ling's wonderful accent). Yeah, I know it's the same game, but it just feels too hollywood. It's like Eddie Izzard once said, "If they remade 'Room with a view' in America it'd be called, 'Room with a view....OF HELL!!!'".

Screw the haters, MGS: TTS had problems, but I still enjoyed it.

And, in some instances, the music was actually better in TTS - Mantis' Theme was pretty awesome. Snake's fight with the Ninja was awesome. I remember when a video of that hit GAF and everyone was like, "OMG OMG OMG."

But dodging missles sucked. First person aiming wasn't a problem if you didn't use it. Sissies.

WHAT! That was the one thing about the changed voice acting I actually liked! Her accent in the orginal was just stupid. Taking out Naomi's accent and the rest of the voice acting in general in TTS was the real crime. I actually just ran through the first couple parts of MGS (I just beat MGS3 again so I've been on a little MGS kick lately) and man, the voice acting in the original is just superb. It's really dropped in quality since, especially David Hayter. In the original he was just so quick and natural sounding, while MGS2 and up he sounds too gruff like he's trying too hard. Colonel Campbell has the same problem too.

I think the pacing in the codec sequences and cutscenes in general were much better in MGS than the rest of the games. It just has this feel and polish that, more than anything else, keeps it set apart as the best of the series, though MGS3 came oh-so-close to 100% recapturing the magic.

My only problem with this is the graphics. When it zooms in on Sniper Wolf after her last fight, yuck. What a mess. Texture quality also seemed inconsistent throughout the game.

Still, I loved it for the new cutscenes.

Background music was in my face sometimes, minor gripe.

Oh yeah, the MGS soundtrack is much better than the rest. The sequels had good music, but the original's was just so epic sounding. And the original theme (Game Over), which Harry-Gregson pulled the 'new theme' out of, worked great as an alert track. It's too bad they didn't keep the original soundtrack in TTS, they should have at least used to the original compositions if they wanted to update it.

EDIT

Glad I'm not the only one who thought that was completely out of place. Good thing it's pretty much the only occurence of Snake pulling weapons out of his back pocket in a cutscene.

The Twin Snakes was clearly better than the original. Graphically it was bit of a disappointment, and controls were messed up, it was a shame SK couldn't get them to the level of MGS2. The cut scenes were excellent, way better than those in the original. Bringing a real director to the project clearly helped things. Shame that they didn't do the same with MGS3, it was quite a mixed bag in that department.

It really less about how unrealistic and more about how insanely over the top director Kitamura tends to be when he directs. Let's face it, the Metal Gear Solid series has it's fair share of over the top stylish action but with Kitamura the word "excessive" isn't in his volcabulary, making the original MGS1 and MGS2/3 seem tame in comparision and thusly doesn't fit to the cinematic stylings as well.

Its not that its over the top because the series has always been that way, the problem is that Kitamura turned Snake into Neo whereas Kojima portrays Snake an entirely different way. In TTS Solid Snake can do anything and he never feels vulnerable, in every other game in the series its the exact opposite. If you compare Solid Snake from TTS to Solid Snake from MGS2 they seem like entirely different characters.

Interesting how most of the OP complaints would probably hold true for the entirety of the original PS1 version of MGS. In that context, this entire thread has been severely derailed from the second post.

Aside from the select few that politely referenced the original post and addressed a few of his concerns, does anyone actually read posts anymore, or do they just go with the topic title?
