Michael Pachter: Don`t listen to the XBOX "fastest pre-ordered" Xbox ever bullshit.

Michael had this to say during his episode of Pachter Factor on Youtube:

On that topic, Xbox One X is ranked on Amazon in the pre-orders a year to date, last I looked number 66. I believe the NES Classic was at number 23. It sold 2.3 million units lifetime, and you know that the bulk of those units were sold last year, so this year maybe a million, so if Xbox One X is ranked 48th bellow that, it`s not even close to a million, and of course the Amazon allocation is probably five or ten thousand units, so don`t fall for the bullshit that comes out of Windows Central that tells you that this is the fastest pre-ordered console and Xbox history. They only have a couple. The original Xbox didn`t have big pre-orders. The Xbox 360, maybe, but honesty, who was pre-ordering consoles back then, so of course this is the most pre-ordered, because they are much more organized, and they`re marketing to an install base of 30-35 million Xbox Live Gold members, so of course they`re heavily pre-ordered.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Been know. Not that i disagree but i would think someone like Pachter would have better data to back it up then Amazon rankings.

The language around "fastest selling" is definitely suspect since it is dependant on how many units were made available for sale.

One thing that guys me about what he says though is that people weren't preordering during the 360 days. It was definitely something people would have been preordering. Hell, people were preordering consoles during the original Xbox.

So he's arguing that they're technically right but it's a different market now than before and marketing speak is bad? K.

I think he makes one good point:

Preorders have become the norm, so every launch is 'sells out' of preorders, and every launch sets a new record.

So at the end its still the "fastest pre ordered Xbox" ever?
Great job Pachter.

Love how he "attacks" WC. When Xbox said it themself. :p

When will people learn to take Microsoft's PR with a grain of salt. They always over spin things (e.g. Highest Quality Pixels).

So... he's calling out the fact that they were vague on purpose? I guess it's good to give people a perspective with numbers, but I think most of us knew what those statements meant. Is he trying to clarify things for people who wouldn't watch his show anyway?

So he made the comment, then immediately backed off of it.

I remember when 360 launched, and a lot of stores weren't taking preorders because their stock was going to be so limited. They just handed them to whoever was at the store when it was going on the shelf.

I camped Best Buy for mine all night- there were about 200 people - only 8 left with a unit (I was one of them)

1Xs only competition is the OG xb1... and we know how that turned out.

The claim is probably true- but doesn't really mean much without numbers.

Wait so you're telling me that marketing speak from one of the big three is intentionally misleading? Well I never.

I think beating the OG Xbox One is not bad for a "premium" hardware refresh.
Day one sales of the OG Xbox One were pretty solid iirc.

It is good to see Jez being called out in public by it false claims.

If XB1X can't do more preorder than the dead XB1 pre 180 changes then it is better don't try to launch it.

These spins hurts more than help.

No, he's arguing that they're technically right but it doesn't mean much and marketing speak is making it seem like it's more successful than it actually is.

It's like saying Dragon Age Inquisition is better than Dragon Age 2. Sure it's true but they're both garbage so who cares

If they allowed pre-ordering for 360 they didn't have a great allotment. I remember a ton of people waiting in line to get one on launch day and even the stores didn't have large quantities to sell. Many left disappointed after camping out all night.

Marketing speak is always going to make numbers sound inflated, but I do cock an eyebrow at the claim that nobody pre-ordered consoles during the 360 era.

How does NES Classic sells change anything about Xbox One X being the fastest Xbox pre-ordered ever?

yeah, the paragraph in the OP is weird, like it was written by a random videogame forum goer, it has no data to back things up and just poorly formulated/written.

he's probably right in the end but damn...

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
So, Xbox One x will sell 1 billion units then.

Seriously, i know what he's attempting to say(which is the sales number for Amazon US for preorders is not anywhere as big as a the trumpeting would have you believe, which is obvious), but what came out was an incoherent babble falsely equating MS's marketing terms with the fact that XB1X does have the fasted preordered mantle in the Xbox family.

Maybe my read comprehensions is bad.

But he called bullshit the fact the preorders are something to be happy about or to say it looks good/high... it is pretty small... being the fastest preorder means nothing when you compare with:

Xbox: people didn't used to preorder at time
360: very few preorders because the same reason of Xbox
XB1: after the reveal and E3 and before the big 180 changes the preorders were ridiculous low

The first Jez article even said the preorders are ahead expectations but later he confessed to be only one retail at UK that preordered better than it own retail estimates.
