Micron predicts that cars will need 300GB of RAM

I'd do anything to have cars that looked like this again

my childhoods cousin has that exact same car, hes had it over 35 years

No, they wont. Another one selling shovels in imaginary gold rush.

Exactly. This is the biggest level of BS ever! There's LITERALLY no way that a car would need 300 GBs of RAM for Level 4 autotomy. NO WAY! Teslas come with 8 to 16 GBs of RAM today with their AI4 computer chips with FSD 14.2. Micron are full of liars.

"IF" a car needs 300 GBs of RAM to do autotomy, then they are screwed and won't be able to scale in any real way that'll mean anything on a large scale.

Man, all these companies are in cahoots together. I don't want any of this shit. Take me back to before the privacy invasion, data collecting, ID theft, collusion, price fixing, corporate hellscape we live in.

Cars with a steering wheel, A/C, heat, a radio, an AUX port, no power anything except steering and minor shit that isn't part of the hellscape that violently increases prices.

Fucking hell and fuck all these people. Nothing is out of reach for them to invade your life and take you for every dollar you have.

Completely self-serving for them to say...but if it's true then maybe ya better build more memory to fix the problem.

The thing is, I keep seeing other memory makers say they are wary of expanding production like Samsung, which tells me they're wary of the gravy train ending.

Manufacturer of memory and member of the memory cartel says that more memory is needed for the future.
They killed their consumer PC memory for this stuff. If you ever wanted proof that Crucial saw rising prices killing their PC consumer brand and Micron acted on it here it is. They're even selling it to self driving car manufacturers.

Yeah because consoles do not use ram at all
They do but the fragmented PC market means the low volume consumer memory stick market is taking a beating already whereas consoles aren't. The proof is in the pudding.

You will still get micron selling to the big businesses though Apple, Lenovo, AMD, Nvidia, Sony, Nintendo, and the big volume players aren't affected as much. Consumer memory sticks for your PC desktop build? Massive price hikes due to low volume (which lowers volume further) and Crucial dead as a result.

Oh yeah, you are totally right. I've almost forgotten about Micron "proudly" announcing that they fuck off from the consumer memory market to chase after the "AI" market.

just another sign of the economy slowly shifting from consumer driven to B2B. Corporations nowadays make more money selling amongst themselves than selling products to the end consumer.
All the actual technological innovation is never in our hands, just theirs. .

So if 32GB ram costs $400, and car manufacturers jack up the prices, because why not, it could be like $5k easily just for that.

Here's an idea, maybe just go back to making "dumb" cars without all the unnecessary electronics.

Consoles are closed up spaces which MS and Sony can easily make use of even with higher prices. PC on the other hand is a free fucking market which means prices can fucking skyrocket to whatever the fuck. Obviously console prices will be huge as well, but the difference will always be much MUCH bigger when it comes to PC.

It will be atleast a decade before those AI's conform to safety regulations on european streets, atleast over here those machines would need like 99% failure free environment over x amount of hours/weeks/months of 24/7 usage before they are deemned street worthy if they are truly autonomous.

Also some of the streets in our often 500+ year old cities over here are like well you have like 5 centimeters to spare left and right between buildings, im not gonna trust an AI in any historical inner city layout in europe, pure autobahn/highway technology.

now i'm rarely glad tht i live in south east asia, where smart cars are rare and very pricy to buy
my last car is still on manual without more features, cheaper to maintain.

I can't wait for the first car to just strip all this bullshit away. Just let me plug my phone in to listen to music and to charge while I use it for GPS and that's all I need. Nuke the rest.

This 300GB is just for L4 autonomy too not L5 which European streets would likely need.

They should really make more effort to have standardised (not soldered) memory though. I think DIMM could die soon and CAMM2 and LPCAMM2 become a standard with the smallest physical size while offering repairability. They should do everything to help economies of scale for now though because volume is hurting consumer bought DIMM hard at the moment.

Yo Sanjay, let me see the math on that real quick. 300GB? Most LLMs dont need anything that big. What's funky ass mofo talking about?

This simple ass mofo is just manifesting his biggest masturbation fantasy at this point. L to the O to the L.

At some point this has to bust/flop.

I remember idiots selling 5g as self driving cars and doctors performing surgery from the US on a patient in Africa.

YEARS later and I still get buffering attempting to stream a YT video

I recently had a 2026 Jeep Wrangler as a rental car while mine was in the shop. It has like a 10 inch infotainment display, and no way to change songs with physical buttons. It's getting so fucking stupid.

You're going to need ram to hold your member info for your subscription. Without your subscription the car won't even turn on.

I want to buy a 1980s square body truck. Or a 90s Honda civic and just learn how to maintain it.

No amount of RAM will solve Manila's traffic problems anyway.

Yeah, 300GB to run programs that need 20x less but probably also bloated on purpose because being wasteful creates more demand and value for them.
