Opinion Business Platform Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella says the company is ‘very, very much focused on gaming’

During the firm’s annual shareholder meeting, Satya Nadella was asked what efforts Microsoft is making to “win the console war” with PS5, and to provide an overview of its gaming strategy.

“First thing, we’re very excited about the new console launches in the market,” he said of Xbox Series X/S, which debuted in November and broke Microsoft’s 24-hour launch record of over one million sales, according to the company.

“We always have sort of focused on ensuring that our gamer community that counts on us to produce the best consoles has a new generation of consoles, which are powerful and really great for gameplay. And we are supporting it with the best content with the best community.

“But the broader vision we have is to ensure that the three billion gamers out there are able to play their games, anywhere they want with all the content they want and with whom they want to,” Nadella continued (transcribed by Seeking Alpha). “And that’s really what we are building our strategy around.

“You’ve seen us double our content portfolio with ZeniMax acquisition, you see us make advances in our community efforts and our subscription offers with Game Pass. And that’s what you can expect from us.

“We are absolutely very, very much focused on gaming, and ensuring that all the three billion gamers around the world get the best content, best community and the best cloud services to power their gaming experiences going forward,” Nadella said.

Oh gee I'm glad they said this about the Series X, afterall they never ever said anything like that about the Xbox one back in the day 🙄

I have said this before, actions not words, the 360 era was so fantastic because Microsoft where really trying hard to get solid unique games into the hands of consumers, and it was that wide push that made it a console for everyone.

Xbox one was just a focus on pushing hardware and having multiplatforms do the heavy lifting, which dousent work... People need a reason to buy your console, and until I see some solid physical on store shelve examples that Microsoft has changed since the barren one era, PR statements like this simply won't cut it.

They really are all about that GP/xCloud, but no wonder given such enormous, already existing userbase.

They need time to show something from all the new studios.

People forget that stuff like horizon, gow, days gone etc was in the oven for 5-6 years before release.

Do you want big single player quality games? You need to wait, development time for big stuff it's not gonna get shorter any time soon.

360 struck lightening. It released A year ahead of PS3, it was cheaper, easier to develop for And had for the first time a bunch of Playstation centric games like Tekken, DMC, Final Fantasy etc. As well as the online gaming boom and new great games like Gears.

Its not gonna have the same success and since 2010 PS3/PS4/PS5 has been on the ball.

It would be nice if they introduced something like Microsoft Consumer Ultimate - with Office 365, GamePass (maybe Windows too) subscription bundle. It would cost around 30-40 per month maybe, so it would be kinda expensive for general user.

They have Xbox All Access though. Something similar for Windows would be neat.

You really went out of your way to search & post this from 6 years ago from someone that is not the Microsoft CEO (or dealt with anything Xbox related) like it was relevant lol

All they need to earn gamer's love back is to make some great AAA titles like in the 360 era, or atleast try, they swim in money lol, everything else is on place.

I don’t know. What got them the lead on the 360 was that more or less by accident the adopted a less weird architecture for their console than the PS3 so, again more by accident than design they ended up with a product that was cheaper and ran third party games better. Then they threw it all away with Kinect and TV.

Is no easy way back.

Its called a Google search, a quick Google search also shows that he has worked in the Xbox PR department during the xbox one launch as Xbox's chief marketing and strategy manager, along with plenty of other windows devices

OTHERWISE XBOX WOULDENT LET HIM TALK ABOUT XBOX WHEN HES ON THE COMPANY PAYROLL.

you also went out of your way to highlight your inability to use Google like it was relevant lol

Making comments from someone in the Xbox PR department (which he isn't based on his Linkedin btw) and making comments as the Microsoft CEO isn't even close to being the same. Thats like comparing Sateya to Aaron Greenburg. The comments have different merits if it's the CEO of the company saying it. So again, nice try.

I mean, Microsoft just signed off on $7.2billion acquisition of a major video games publisher and subsidiaries, taking the total number of MS first party owned studios to an industry leading 23.

It's really not the same statement as in 2013.

Guy brought up a quote from someone that isn't even in the Xbox department and said "wElL tHEy sAId tHe sAMe tHiNg dUriNg tHe xBoX oNe rEleAsE" and thought it was comparable to the CEO saying it lol

They have more first party studios than PlayStation now, by a good margin too. It’s not as if all the PS4 exclusives were made overnight.

That should be proof alone that they are serious about it.

I'm really impressed with the way Microsoft is going on the PC front. Committed to all first party games coming to not only PC, but to Steam as well. The reference to 3 billion gamers is obviously talking about broadening their reach with cloud gaming, but Microsoft hasn't put all their eggs in that basket thankfully. Local gaming is still one of their primary focuses and I'm glad to see it.

THQ Nordic have a lot of studios as well. Microsoft’s corporate culture more or less ensures everything they produce is gonna be Halo Infinite.

Or do you need more evidence that Yusuf was heading the PR department for Xbox back in 2014 or can you grow up, stop ending everything with "lol" like your 12 and perhaps avoid making shit up in bad faith.

They just need to double down on Series X/S patches, especially BC titles since non cross gen titles will take a while to get here.

Heading the PR department is not the same as being the CEO of the company. So your original comment is irrelevant. Which is what everyone is telling you.

Since Google is your best friend, go find a quote from the early Xbox One days of the Microsoft CEO saying they are very focused on gaming or them buying a gaming company for 5+ billions dollars.

Maybe you will have a better argument then

The guy is obssed with cloud services and monthly payments. They want to do with gaming what they did with office software where they eradicated all cheap options of buying lifetime license and instead replace with deceptively cheap service model which ends up more expensive over time.
The only thing that forces them to pretend being consumer friendly is distant third place and Phil leaving their own first party studios in ruin after his rule.

After chucking $7.5b at buying Zenimax it'd be hard for him to say anything other than this. That being said they spent $5.4b on buying Nokia and its patents out in 2013 and look at them now.

PS5 would probably be double the price, if it would be this year at all and all that shit which is not great for customer. Also way less fun in here. And most importantly no Craig.

So you have moved away from "nothing to do with xbox lol" to "only a head of the entire marketing push lol", so you will accept the words of a CEO of how the company is making its push is that right?

If your setting the bar high that only the CEO can give direction to his company, thats fair enough but please understand most people would understand the nuance that what a anyone in a company says and does can be two very diffrent things.

Most sane people would wait for results in the form of products in hand, when a company spent the last half a decade spouting the same line and delivering nothing, only diffrence this time is its someone not even related to xbox saying it. ;)

Microsoft could have and should have released a new console in 2010/2011 instead of Kinect. Instead they completely mis-read the market and were too late to the Wii party. From there, they've been on the back foot.

With the launch of Series S, it's obvious that they're still on the backfoot and have no fucking idea what they're doing. The 1X should have been touted as the 'cost-effective' next gen console as it would have sold shit loads. The XSX should have been the premium next gen gaming platform WITH next gen games.

Adding more cost by creating the S, while hampering next gen game development because of the lack of relative power, shows Microsoft are still on the back foot.

It's amazing, but not entirely surprising, seeing the company go from a 1-2 punch of arguably the 2 greatest consoles ever made (Xbox, Xbox 360) to the worst consumer electronics product ever released (xbox one) followed by the most barren and self-harming generation launch ever.

IMO (as a yuge fucking MS fan) the only thing keeping MS from being laughed out of the industry is the team that made the 1x, XSX and elite pad, The Coalition and whomever makes the Forza games (i'm not a racing guy). And as much as i love GP, it is the equivilent of Gillette selling all of their products at 50% off with 100% extra free after their woke-advert backfire.

I'm pissy because i want MS to be the best, i could do that, yet some harvard educated multi-million $ salaried shit-eating grinned motherfucker is pissing it fucking it up at every turn.

He speaks in broad strokes and generalities because he doesn’t have a clue about gaming. No wonder Xbox studios are in such disarray with that sort of leadership.

Not like they had 7 years to prepare for this or anything. Or that they had competition to learn from.

Back in 2013, up until the infamous Microsoft E3 panel, I had serious doubts between the PS4 and Xbox One. Needless to say, Sony won over my money

It’s all gonna be woke bullshit so who cares? If you want corporate wokeness you can get it from Sony or Disney or the BBC right now.
They have a fuckload of studios and brands, they are not all woke.

doom is not woke for example, same for halo, fable was never woke, same for elder scroll\fallout etc.

Also if a game is good, i don't give a fuck about how woke it is.

I have problems when they are woke on top of being shitty games.

If they weren’t woke before M$ bought them they sure as heck will be after HR and the diversity and inclusion committee and trust and safety council have taken them behind the bike sheds and given them a good kicking.

And if you look up Corporate Wokeness on Dictionary.com a bluehaired land whale has just edited it so there is a picture of Halo and Bonnie Ross smiling back at you. Everything they make is going to be *exactly like that*.

Oh shut up you moron. Do you not see the difference between some underling saying they take it seriously and the fucking CEO of Microsoft? Nadella was lukewarm on everything Xbox at the start but now he greenlights a 7.5B acquisition. That's really all that needs to be said.
