the launch of halo 2 resulted in the only profitable quarter for the first xbox. i wouldn't doubt halo 3 having a similar result.

I mean, it must've been Halo 3 that gave them quite a good quarter.
Quarter ended 5 days after Halo 3 launch so Halo 3 certainly impacted them having a profitable Quarter much like someone else Said halo 2 did the same for Xbox 1. In fact if you consider it majority of the profits is linked to Halo 3

It sucks that all profits gained from Halo 3 are only redeemable in Master Chief Fun Bucks and thus are somehow looked upon differently than regular kind profits.

The sales of Halo 3 from September 25th through September 30th were.

Halo 3 certainly does have an impact (and certainly will continue to do so), but all the revenue MS reported in the PR about Halo 3 doesnt go back to them. Retailers get cut, production gets a cut, etc. Hardware is bound to be profitable or at least break even now so 360 should continue to be profitable going forward.

Any shipped numbers for 360?

$165 million profit? Halo 3 made $170 million in the first day (not to mention the first week), so without it they would have been in the red this quarter. Guess it was a good thing they moved the release up then.

Well, Halo 3 was what $300 million in revenue for that one week covered by this report?

So yeah, still some work to be done.

So $900 million in Halo revenue, offset by $10 billion in moneyhat expenses?

It's all over, sell your Microsofts.

Am I reading that wrong, or is that $10 million worth of moneyhats?

EDIT: errrr.... I am reading that wrong, thats 10 THOUSAND million worth.

:O
Indeed that is $10 billion, however, that is the Companies entire blance sheet. It is not to do with quarterly results. All their assets and stuff are included, in this case it seems to mean MS has been buying a lot of companies and may include the cost of letting Bungie go for less money than they are worth (if they did do that), i dunno if that would be included though:

Goodwill is one of the more difficult concepts for business reporters to grasp. It is not, as many reporters think, the good feelings people hold for a company.
Instead, it comes about when the company purchases another company for more than its book value (book value is assets minus liabilities). The excess acquisition cost is placed on the books as "goodwill." That means that if a company pays $2 million for another company, and the purchased company's book value is $1 million, the goodwill is $1 million.
Still, who the hell have they been buying for that much over their value?
Stock in Facebook and the like? $10 billion is a ridiculous amount.
