Microsoft to offer 3$ per 1000 views if you promote XBO

Oh the classic "Sony also did X" defense, I'm sure if both did that, it will make the matter totally OK.
/s

Geez people, it doesn't matter who's doing it, it's bad and no one should defend it.

stonesak

Okay, if you really insist
In the other thread I saw MN quotes from 2005, come on.

That thread was about Major Nelson. This thread has nothing to do with Sony unless you have information that Sony is also currently engaging in these kinds of practices.

I don't understand it. MS has all this money. They spend sooooo much on advertising, on moneyhats, on that ridiculous farce of a launch party, on all these crazy extravagant events.

Why don't they use some of that money to put less shitty hardware in the XB1

Then they won't have to pay people to say nice things about it.

I will never understand.

Advertising goes a long way to selling a product, even shit ones. You could have the best product in the world but you still need to advertise.

Apple, films etc. all have ridiculous advertising costs.

Microsoft made choices they hope result in success and hitting targets they've set.

Right or wrong, who knows. Time will tell.

So, lets see what the FTC have to say, in their own words:

Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising

Yep, look at Section 255.5, if they don't disclose that they have been materially compensated for the promotion, they have broken the law.

Interestingly, Example 7 is specifically about Video Games & Videogame hardware.
Oh, let the games begin. :D
Example 8 refers specifically to astroturfing on sites like GAF, reddit, etc.

An online message board designated for discussions of new music download technology is frequented by MP3 player enthusiasts. They exchange information about new products, utilities, and the functionality of numerous playback devices. Unbeknownst to the message board community, an employee of a leading playback device manufacturer has been posting messages on the discussion board promoting the manufacturer’s product. Knowledge of this poster’s employment likely would affect the weight or credibility of her endorsement. Therefore, the poster should clearly and conspicuously disclose her relationship to the manufacturer to members and readers of the message board.

Catch that, Bish? :p

It seems like Microsoft want to test the water with this promotion method because damn.. just over $3000 for the budget?
No, they're not testing the waters. By capping they payout, they'll actually get way more advertising than what they actually pay for.

People use these sorts of community-produced content to get a lot of their impressions of games. It's sort of a transitional medium further away from formal reviews. There's the impression that they're motivated by people's own tastes and preferences. This muddies those waters. Like a newspaper writing articles about a company who's also a major advertiser in that same paper. It raises questions about the validity of the information.

This is literally paying money to bring about more positive coverage of a platform, claiming to be an organic gesture by the community. If Microsoft believed these people would produce this content anyway, there would be no rational reason to offer compensation for doing so. It cheapens the value of community interaction and content creation by making it a piece of formal advertising.
This post sums it up nicely. MS already have gaming sites pimping XBone, but it's not having the effect they want because the gaming media have already destroyed their credibility. This campaign is all about making it appear as though real people like XBone too.

Fair enough. Nothing wrong with this if you genuinely love the Xbox One.
If people genuinely loved XBone, there would be no reason to pay them to say so.

I don't understand it. MS has all this money. They spend sooooo much on advertising, on moneyhats, on that ridiculous farce of a launch party, on all these crazy extravagant events.

I will never understand.
Better hardware costs more money forever. Advertising and exclusive games are a one-time investment required to launch the product, and after reaching critical mass they can coast on the residuals with minimal additional effort/expenditure.

Machinima is acting as an agent of MS. If there is payola going on, MS is at least as guilty as anyone else.
This is what I was wondering about. MS are paying Machinima to promote XBone, and Machinima make no secret of this. Is any additional disclosure required from the content creators? Does a banner at the top of machinima.com saying, "Powered by Your Good Friends at Microsoft" absolve everyone involved of any additional responsibilities regarding disclosure? It almost sounds like MS paid Machinima to run XBone ads, but Machinima have then sub-contracted the actual production of the ads to third parties.

Anyone following what I'm saying? lol

Maximum amount that Microsoft will pay for all of this exposure? A mere $3,750.

Are we allowed to start some sort of epic shame list? Or, if not specifically calling it that, have a master list somewhere of YT users that have no problem taking the cash? No one is going to learn a thing unless it's actually on record somewhere that they're doing it and people individually need to be called out on it. Preferably something as visible and obvious as possible.

I know you could argue that it would be punitive and in bad taste to make up dirt lists, but if GAF has sorted out corporate PR shills in the past I don't see how doing so to people taking corporate money and not disclosing it are any different. More interestingly, are any of these people known GAFfers, and would there be consequences here for that?

Wow. Just wow. Great job of putting it together!

218,525 views / 3$ per 1000 = $656 pocketed from Microsoft's campaign with just one video.

theRadBrad is going to make a ton of money from this campaign...but then again, he has so many subscribers anyway that he probably makes a five-figures salary from YouTube revenues.

PewDiePie is too damn rich to accept petty offers from Microsoft / Machinima.

I can't believe that you thought you could trust anyone about anything. With all due respect (and I do mean respect) you're one of the most cynical jaded motherfuckers I've ever come across on the internet. Surely you knew deep down this was probably going on and not just with MS. And that's not a "Sony too!" joke, I mean the whole damn industry. It's simply too much money for any of this shit to be pure.

Do you think 1000 users will view your post considering how many have you on their ignore list?

Damn...

Great examples. Sony Picture got called out on that and had to settle the suit, and the blog got pulled down too. Should we expect a similar repercussion for Microsoft then? A lawsuit, ridicule and an end to this deceitful campaign? I say great!

of course i'm not talking about 3000 dollars, but something bigger.
As much as I dont like him, partnering with him would be a good idea on a commercial standpoint.

It's cool bro, I accept the label. I am made cynical by news like this. I knew that people like Sony (look at the Francis shit) would offer incentive to channels, but I never knew it was this behind-the-scenes as deceptive and at this wide of a scale. It pretty much renders viewing any youtube video that endorses a game pointless - now there is no way to tell who is being legit or not.

I already was distrustful of media and these companies after Sony 2006 and Microsoft DRM but now I add all of youtube to the mix because of this evidence :/

Well that's why PewDiePie sold out to Spike TV / Viacom and was featured at VGX. He's a brand at this point...with real power to sway the minds of his young, impressionable fanbase.

I wonder how much Spike TV / Viacom paid him for his brief, very loud appearance.

I mean, were you really ever just buying games blindly because of some random video person's recommendation? The real thing to worry about IMO is the more subtle, advertisement-like psychological effects of shady schemes like this.

At this moment there are about 2,000 videos produced as a result of this $3,750 marketing campaign.

A good majority of those videos were not created by those who officially signed up with the campaign.

Crowd-sourced, sleazy advertising at its finest.

Yeah, I'm surprised that video games slipped through YouTube unfiltered for this long, though obviously I'd wager it's been going on longer than I thought. Luckily I have what folks have called "bad taste" so I don't really listen to youtubers talk about games much, I just look at the footage and decide if the game looks completely broken and go from there. But it sucks that if I did want to look for honest feedback these days I'd have to ask someone I know personally. Ain't no telling what kind of deal the cat on the other end of the keyboard is getting. Pretty shitty.

Can someone summarize why amirox feels this way ?

It appears these deals may have been going on longer than we knew. There are older videos with these tags in them and if we're putting 2+2 together on these then what about stuff that isn't publicized? It just doesn't sit right.

Many probably don't know that what they're doing is illegal, and the others like aquamarine said don't care.

You know what the worst thing about all of this is? It's in Microsoft's best interest for people to keep silent about their Microsoft affiliation.

If they do get caught, Microsoft gets off scot-free.

Few people care, since they most likely aren't going to get caught.

Many probably don't know that what they're doing is illegal, and the others (like what aquamarine said) don't care.

fair enough, as when I lecture or present it's a big no no and I am real watchful.
