Milo and Bannon used GamerGate to further white supremacist ideals in the media

* bunch of nothing.

It's crazy after how many repeats of GG or white supremacists threads on GAF, the moths still come put to get burnt.

Is it a bragging right to troll and then get instant banned?

it seems there are people who's life highlights include getting gaf "riled up" (which is their interpretation of being thoroughly discredited in all of about 3 minutes) and then posting it on other sites as a badge of whatever honor they think that is....... as if they will somehow be remembered past a page or two.

God dang. What's with Neo-nazi, alt-right defenders, and the "both sides" BS? It just brings out the junior and burner accounts out the woodwork.

People want equal civil rights and treatment. Why the hell would we compromise on such human decency?!

We ain't taking your muddling peddling bullshit!

Man, makes me appreciate the simple console wars, that's fun and games, but this, the whole goddamn gaming community is infected with this bigotry nonsense. Things constant normalization of slurs of the online games, was just a symptom of how widespread bigotry is in gaming.

I remember a lot of pro-GG folks screaming back in the day it had nothing to do with MRA/Alt right types. They were absolutely sure it was not political on their side, it was purely about ethics and keeping politics out of gaming.

I'd say it would be hard to ignore the truth now, but as the thread shows, they continue to hide behind a shield and claim the rest is just fake news.

Yeah, it's pretty easy. People do blatantly racist shit all the time and then immediately claim they're not racist. "In my heart, I don't hate black people, so I'm not a racist" they yell as they start burning a second set of crosses on a black family's lawn.

I'm not going to say 'This shouldn't have needed proof' but this shouldn't have needed proof. The venn diagram for people who refuse to believe he's a nazi and that Gamergate was fuelling white supremacy now, in the face of proof, is literally just a circle compared against the people who would have done it without proof.

It's still nice to have it, though.

That's the thing the article and the MANY MANY news articles coming out now about manipulative ads/"news" articles on FB, Twitter, YouTube, etc bought by Russia: they're always looking for a rube, and even if you're "in" on it unlike those "normies", you're still a tool (the older figurative one heh).

It says a lot that Bannon considered "computer gamers" one of the main potential demographics for a white supremacist revival.

Yup, they saw shit that most of us dismissed, but then again, they were doing a ton of legwork to make that shit much more dangerous than it already was.

It's almost like they are all playing from the same handbook - and have been since GG started.

- I dunno what "GG/milo/altright" is, and if I don't surely none of you do either because, reasons?

- even though I know nothing about them let me tell you some good things about them.

- why don't you all discuss the other side of something that has been around for years because surely none of you know what they are about by now?

It was like this way before GG. Look into the rise of the internet MRA's. You'll see a lot of the same people peddling the same things. And the birthing ground for a lot of it was 4chan.

Naziism is a great launching point for why absolute free speech can lead to a tumor in speech.

Even I thought GG was being a little too obvious,
guess there's no more easily deluded than a willing fool.
And good god, can we stop with the easy bait like "he's married to a black man so he can't be racist" shit?
We just had an abortion hating lawmaker resign because his whole persona was revealed to be fake.
For quick bucks you can find plenty of people with no moral to do what Milo does.

Oh, fuck!
We're going back to links to Carl of Swindon's vids unannounced, are we?

Racially superior Milo claims he couldn't see people giving Nazi salute due to his defective genes:

Unbeknownst to me, Richard Spencer fans made racist hand gestures during my rendition of ”America The Beautiful." These same racists took a video of the event and sent it to Buzzfeed this week.

As some of you know, I have severely impaired vision and I did not see these hand gestures happen.

Here is Milo clearly seeing hand gestures during a Q&A session he hosted:

So "absolute proof" is the standard now?

Not even science works like that lol.

Also, "i don't know anything but id like to post"

Come-on dude
Its like the global warming thing. We show them pretty much definitive proof and they are like "NAH, globalwarmingisahoax2024.geocities.com says this one scientist that no one who knows of but totally went somewhere smart says its a lie"

My eternal favourite will be "I don't know anything about this subject, but here's a link to a Brietbart article."

and a mysoginist!

And despite nominally being a member of the human species, he's shown himself to be inhuman at every opportunity.

Mine's "if you don't debate every single one of us individually while we dogpile you, we win"

No sympathy for the obtuse "I know nothing but I saw something on the internet showing that someone who's not involved is a POS and it shows that GG is totally correct?"
It's a joke on the groundhog days of GG debates

How do gamergaters get together and plan the harassment attacks? Is only a 4chan thing? The more I google on how organised they are the more I feel like a dog chasing its tale.

Please note that I I'm not stupid nor am I baiting anyone. It is a question I feel that I need answered to help understand stories like this.

If you even THINK about the phrase "I don't know/not sure/unaware about what GG is," you should refer to the following. It's been years after the fact and we're still seeing the effects of it not only for this industry but as this article shows, for America as a whole, I can't even think of a more pertinent event to be aware about when it comes to this medium.
That's an excellent post and a great tool for everybody who's looking to argue in good faith. But then again, someone who wanted to do that would probably try to inform themselves about the basic facts before coming here to say how everyone else is wrong, every position/opinion/idea is the same, dog shit tastes the same as steak, and Middle Town is the best place to live.

These clowns are so transparent, and they always act in the same way. None of them will read that post. Fortunately they are always banned quickly.

They had IRC chats throughout GG. I'd guess they've largely moved to Discord now. The beginning of GG all happened in IRC chats.

For Gaffers who want some lovely schadenfreude:

Buzzfeed said:
Dan Lyons, the veteran tech reporter and editor who also worked for nearly two years on HBO’s Silicon Valley, emailed Yiannopoulos (“you little troublemaker”) periodically to wonder about the birth sex of Zoë Quinn, another GamerGate target, and Amber Discko, the founder of the feminist website Femsplain, and to suggest a story about the public treatment of the venture capitalist Joe Lonsdale, who had been accused of sexual assault in a lawsuit that the plaintiff eventually dropped.

Buzzfeed said:
And the former Slate technology writer David Auerbach, who once began a column “Gamergate must end as soon as possible,” passed along on background information about the love life of Anita Sarkeesian, the GamerGate target; “the goods” about an allegedly racist friend of Arthur Chu, the Jeopardy champion and frequent advocate of social justice causes; and a “hot tip” about harsh anti-harassment tactics implemented by Wikipedia. Bokhari followed up with an article: “Wikipedia Can Now Ban You For What You Do On Other Websites.”

Reached by BuzzFeed News at the same email address, Auerbach said the suggestion that he had written the emails was "untrue."

Buzzfeed said:
...Mitchell Sunderland, a senior staff writer at Broadly, Vice’s women’s channel. According to its “About” page, Broadly “is devoted to representing the multiplicity of women's experiences. … we provide a sustained focus on the issues that matter most to women.”

“Please mock this fat feminist,” Sunderland wrote to Yiannopoulos in May 2016, along with a link to an article by the New York Times columnist Lindy West, who frequently writes about fat acceptance. And while Sunderland was Broadly’s managing editor, he sent a Broadly video about the Satanic Temple and abortion rights to Tim Gionet with instructions to “do whatever with this on Breitbart. It’s insane.” The next day, Breitbart published an article titled “‘Satanic Temple’ Joins Planned Parenthood in Pro-Abortion Crusade.”

No idea what they do now, but they got chased off of 4chan's /v/ and onto a board that sympathized with them, 8chan. Lots of racist Jew caricatures, infographics and such there. I've heard of something called Baphomet, but I've also heard they put child porn on the front of that one to keep non-Gamergate people from observing them I was never particularly eager to check that place out.

I see so it sort of started off as forum fodder and has developed in a method much like a hacking community? Thanks for the clear cut answer. I know what gamer gate is, just never understood how they were organised. I picture people into that thing as just kids on a message board who will soon grow out of it, but it seems to be much more than that.

While true, I think Gaming side really needs to soak in how much GG is tied to naziism and white nationalist extremism in this country

i feel like there has been plenty of time to soak in what gamergate actually is. this is the foie gras moment. if people don't get their fill of what it actually is after this expose, well, i think we all know why.

If only GAF bans put a temp cool down ban on their ISPs too. In 6 or 7 GG threads we'd have a much saner place and cut down on all the alt-right nonsense.

Sadly I think there was so little direct response to it from corporate PR because it didn't impact their profits, and many publishers already feel like the overall fanbase is inherently irrational and hostile (like the Overwatch comments previously). :(

Racially superior Milo claims he couldn't see people giving Nazi salute due to his defective genes:
That's a good point. We know what nazis think of the disabled. If Milo goes blind, hopefully he'll do the right thing and make sure the gene pool stays pure.

Whats really scary about this article isn't Milo, though. We all know Milo is less than a piece of shit. It's the Mitchell Sunderlands of the world. The people who pretend to be more than the shit that they are.

White supremacy is on both sides of the aisle.

Well, yes, because the entire structure of the country is inherently white supremacist, but drawing an equivalence between the people actively working against that and the people actively working towards it is pretty facile.

Actually, let me dig out the image from the so-called "Exodus of Gamergate" because it's hilarious. This is when Gamergate got kicked off of /v/. This is how they depicted themselves.

What I love is that Vivian James' character bio explicitly stated that she hated politics, but here she is leading Gamergaters away from 4chan of all places because they got sick of their hateful politics.

...Also, I just realized that Exodus is in the Torah and Gamergate are in love with anti-Semitic images. Whoops.

I like the way the burner accounts are mechanically spamming the "Milo has a black boyfriend" stuff in a thread about an article that outright proves there was a conspiracy to organise and push specific points/defenses/attacks in stuff like GG (and still is). I'm sure it's a coincidence though

I mean, that IRC was mostly just the origin of it, right? As in specifically attacking Zoe rather than organizing GG as a movement after it got its name and such.

Once things got going it was also 4chan -> 8chan (-> Kiwifarms or whatever that is?). IIRC Wizardchan was the source of the original pre-GG blind hatred against Zoe for whatever reason. Not to mention certain subreddits.

Then there's Twitter of course, where most of the harassment actually plays out. No real need to be organized when you can spot whatever certain big names are pushing that day and leap on in. Particularly when those big names can post innocuous tweets that will get RTed wisely by unsuspecting people who don't recognize their name (this happens to this day for certain people), getting more eyes on what they post in general. If there's any active "infrastructure" that's held up the longest I'd say it's those vague Twitter connections.

That being said, overall, I don't think I'm wrong if I answer the original question by saying 8chan and Reddit were the most organized places. A lot of it wasn't "planned out" as much as it was posting about someone meant you should go attack them, though.

I'm not 100% on if Kiwifarms is also one, but it fits in well enough anyway. It's actually a board created to harass Chris-chan and other "lolcows" (people who react loudly to harassment, often other autistic people) if I'm not mistaken.

I know exactly what you mean, but what trumps it is when they all fire at you at once expecting you to deal with each of them individually or they'll declare victory.

That's the thing though, GG before or after it got its name was always about attacking Zoe Quinn.
After it got branded as GG, it just broadened its targets to any women who didn't talk about them like they were god's gift to society.

4chan actually banned Gamergate discussion because of all the doxxing that gamergaters were organizing on the site.
Like imagine being such a piece of horrid human scum even fucking 4chan wants to kick you out.

They do work to dox people but I think they operate through other channels and pretend they don't. They even have a board dedicated to NeoGAF and I'm sure are watching this thread.

I don't care about GG, I can't even define what it is (as most people can't, I suspect). But in the current climate I fear that way too often, someone contradicting or questioning a current hot topic will be shoved in the "white supremacist" drawer by default, because it's easier to have baddies that are wrong, rather than to discuss the subject.

I know he's banned, but this exact line of bullshit is what I've been seeing on Twitter for the past couple days used to defend Milo, almost down to the exact words.

Approach anyone with these arguments as posting in bad faith.

Related story about the bar where Milo was partying with neo-Nazis.
They started 'America the Beautiful,' and I looked at my co-workers and said 'This is odd,'" Perry says. "Then all of the sudden, halfway through the song, I see, from behind the stage, about 15 arms go up in the salute."

Perry says she lost it and rushed the stage, grabbing the microphone from Yiannopoulos just as the song, and video clip, ended. "I said 'Get the fuck out. You are not welcome here, at all,'" Perry says. "I was yelling at them, and, I remember this distinctly, they all came around me on the stage and were yelling things. Some were shouting 'Trump, Trump, Trump,' at that point it started to hit me who these people were, and then they started saying 'Make America Great Again.' Then I had people get in my face, it might have been Milo because he didn't immediately go outside, he was kind of getting them aroused, and they were saying 'Make America White Again.'"
But he has a black husband.

Also, keep in mind that Gamergate doesn't exist any more. It's been completely co-opted into the alt-right/white supremacist movement.

All the Gamergate-like attacks/doxxes/brigades/review spam/harassment attacks that occur these days are coming from alt-right/white supremacist groups that the former Gamergaters have joined up with. So the current coordination efforts are occurring on those groups' discords/forums/etc.

Well, yes. To be clear, I watched this all happen on Twitter (and spent a lot of time on Twitter around that time) so I knew most of the stuff happening around it at the time at least.

I just meant specifically that I believe the IRC being talked about was literally for the discussion of Zoe and for communication with the ex that started all of it, and I don't think it was really a big hub for their overall harassment campaigns like 8chan or KIA. Though I'm sure that kind of thing got talked about there too.

Men have been marrying women since forever and that hasn't precluded thousands of years of sexism.
