Retail only sales, via Media Create:

Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2016 (Dec 19 - Dec 25)

05./09. [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition # <ADV> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2015.03.19} (¥2.400) - 51.723 / 1.018.699 (+152%)

Last game was Gran Turismo 4.

Famitsu, who tracks digital and retail sales, said Minecraft hit that number back in May. Here's the best selling Sony titles in Japan (via Famitsu):

PS1 Gran Turismo [All Versions] 648.650 / 2.379.059 SCE 12/23/1997
PS1 Hot Shots Golf [All Versions] 117.383 / 2.018.365 SCE 7/17/1997

PS2 Hot Shots Golf 3 [All Versions] 272.758 / 1.226.480 SCE 7/26/2001
PSV Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition 36.593 / 1.226.065 SCE 3/19/2015
PS2 Gran Turismo 4 [All Versions] 663.543 / 1.210.463 SCE 12/28/2004
PS1 Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back [All Versions] 172.253 / 1.099.708 SCE 12/18/1997
PS1 Arc the Lad 311.236 / 1.090.000 SCE 6/30/1995

Probably going to be Sony's last million seller in Japan. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wait, really? How is that possible? I see Nintendo games selling millions all the time, I figured Sony's must be as well, yet they haven't in over a decade?!

*sees Arc The Lad*

Japanese gamers must've been absolutely desperate for an rpg back in those days.

Anyway, this is pretty crazy. It's also a bit nutty that the Vita has more million sellers than the PS4.

Not even stuff like LBP? That's pretty suprising tbh.

PS3 LittleBigPlanet [All Versions] 47.086 / 123.565 SCE 10/30/2008
PS3 LittleBigPlanet 2 [All Versions] 24.736 / 53.204 SCE 2/10/2011
PSP LittleBigPlanet Portable 4.400 / 20.148 SCE 12/3/2009
PSV LittleBigPlanet PS Vita 4.533 / 13.229 SCE 9/20/2012
PS3 LittleBigPlanet Karting 3.640 / 10.360 SCE 1/17/2013

LBP3 didn't even chart on Famitsu.

That may sound confusing, but despites the PS4 selling better than the Wii U, it's still haven't got a single million seller on the console, while the Wii U already had several.

Also applies to Vita until very recently with Minecraft, despites getting way more games and being way more popular.

Only 120k for the highest selling version? Damn, thought a mascot platformer would do better in JP.

FFXV must be, right? Including digital. Next year DQXI. Can't think of anything else. GT is probably dead too.

Yep, the SW numbers on those platforms are pretty much all third party.

Looking forward to them announcing Minecraft on the Switch. Also they need to add mod support to Minecraft on the Xbox, would love to try out some adventure maps.

FFXV still hasn't sold a million yet, even including the low number it must have sold digitally.

I was including third-party too.

Yea I know. I meant more so that the SW sales on those platforms is congregated around a variety of titles (of various sales numbers) vs. Wii U's SW which is generally the few high performing first party titles.

They have to take different approaches. Nintendo has a treasure trove of ip that they've successfully maintained for decades. Sony doesn't have a consistent million selling franchise to their name. They are forced to play the field and rely on a scattershot approach with 3rd parties.

What does Sony's top 5 or 10 published games this generation look like anyway? MineCraft at 1m then a sharp drop to something like 300k right?

Minecraft has been published by 3 companies in Japan.

Mojang published the digital PS3, PS4 and PSV versions, Sony the retail PS4 and PSV versions and Microsoft the retail and digital Wii U version, as well as all the Xbox versions.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Didnt Knack do like a million?

Gran Turismo, God Of War, MLB The Show and Uncharted(RIP), inFAMOUS, Killzone. They have plenty of IPs that sell a million. Not exactly a high threshold.

More than anything I think this proves how irrelevant Japan is to Sony.

Still a drop in the pie compared to the us and U.K. For Sony.
Having great sales in Japan just doesn't matter like it use too.

More than anything I think this proves how irrelevant Japan is to Sony.

Their software output, hardware and marketing decisions, and the very fact that Sony Interactive Entertainment is an American company headquartered in San Mateo have already made that shift evident.

Gran Turismo, God Of War, MLB The Show and Uncharted(RIP), inFAMOUS, Killzone. They have plenty of IPs that sell a million. Not exactly a high threshold.

When did a Major League Baseball game sell a million in Japan?
