Minneapolis City Council are asking "Where are the police?" as crime rises

Minneapolis City Council members, who recently voted to defund the police department, demanded answers from the city’s police chief for the recent uptick in crime.

“What I am sort of flabbergasted by right now is colleagues, who a very short time ago were calling for abolition, are now suggesting we should be putting more resources and funding into MPD,” Councilmember Phillipe Cunningham, who supported defunding the department, said during a police reform meeting Tuesday.
The council took more than $1 million from the police budget this summer to hire "violence interrupters," who are supposed to defuse potentially violent situations instead of police officers. The impetus for the policy came in the aftermath of George Floyd's death during his arrest by Minneapolis police officers on May 25, sparking protests all over the country.
According to Minneapolis Police Department crime data, violent crimes such as assaults, robberies, and homicides are up in 2020. In August, the city passed the grim milestone of seeing more homicides in 2020 than in all of 2019. Arsons are also up 55%.

Cunningham’s ward has been one of the hardest hit by the crime wave, including the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy and two others who were hit by stray bullets while sitting in their homes.
Cunningham, however, remains committed to the recently instituted public-health-based reforms to the city’s law enforcement.

“If we have these systems in place, we are getting ahead of the violence,” Cunningham said. “That’s why I have advocated so strongly for the violence interrupters, because if they are interrupting the violence before the guns are being fired, then the MPD doesn’t have to respond to that violence.”
“Residents are asking, ‘Where are the police?’” said Councilmember Jamal Osman, who has been fielding complaints that calls for police are going unanswered. “That is the only public safety option they have at the moment. MPD. They rely on MPD. And they are saying they are nowhere to be seen.”
Council President Lisa Bender, one of the leaders of the effort to dissolve the department, accused police of purposefully not arresting people for committing crimes.

“This is not new,” Bender said. “But it is very concerning in the current context.”

And Don't forget this:

...
Three members of the Minneapolis City Council who voted to eliminate the local police force are being protected by a private security detail that costs taxpayers $4,500 a day.
...
The city has spent $63,000 on rent-a-cops for Jenkins and fellow Councilmembers Phillipe Cunningham and Alondra Cano during the last three weeks after the three said they had received threats.

But an MPD spokesperson said no complaints of threats against them had been filed.

All three have pushed the movement to scrap the city police force in favor of “peace officers” and a “holistic, public health-oriented approach” to law enforcement.
...

I popped in today expecting this thread after seeing a similar article on the hill. Now that it's here:

Seriously, WTF were the idiots rioting, and the idiots voting to disband the police, possibly thinking at the time(s) if this outcome is a shock to them.

All I know is, these must be the people that caused grocery stores to warn us not to place plastic bags on our heads. I always wondered who was so dumb that they need a warning not to suffocate themselves.

Chapter 5: In Which Anarchist Discover Why Police are Given Special Consideration in the Application of Force.

You hold police to an impossible standard, they are just not going to go into those situations where they know their leaders are salivating to put their heads on a platter to serve up to BLM.

It almost as if this was the plan, get rid of cops and comitt a shit ton of crimes.

Anyways they ARE NOT realizing this was a mistake. The guy basically blames the cops for not doing their job and still sticks by his guns. MN has not learned. Expect more pain and suffering and dead black bodies. Its all good as long as black people are being killed by criminals who gives a fuck let em die.

What the hell is a “violence interrupter”? I’m sure they’re unarmed and supposed to respond to violent situations to, what, resolve things peacefully and sing Kumbayah?
We're about to see a WHOLE LOT OF FAKE MARTIAL ARTS AND MCDOJOS. I am ready to witness the methods of the progressive VIOLENCE INTERRUPTER.

This is when the Police chief needs to go directly to the people, and see if he/she can get an op-ed in the newspaper explaining why this has happened, and who is responsible.

Put their feet directly into the fire, and burn their toenails off.

violence interrupters, huh? I don't think those guys you hired have been doing a good job so far since your crime rate is rising.

It is obvious why this happened. It happened in Ferguson, it happened in NYC, it is happening in Portland. Crime goes up after these type of cop witch hunts. Tell me if you were a cop in a Democrat city with a Soros funded DA, would you proactively police black people? Or would you think about what is currently happening to the Floyd 4 and the cop in Atlanta, and nope the fuck out making the rational decision that your political leadership and the DA would rather score political points with your life as the sacrifice instead of backing you up.

Fucking idiots. What did they really think was going to happen by demonizing and demoralizing their police force? I hope the same people who are complaining will vote these fuckers out.

it’s textbook really.

1. Defund and demoralize the police while introducing your own police force, in this case the “violence interrupters.”

2. “The police suck at policing now what a shock! We have no choice but to ramp up funding and presence for our violence interrupters.”

3. “Our violence interrupters need guns.”

4. Bread lines and gulags.

The only problem with this is that these idiots (the majority that puts these grifters in charge) are just going to run away from their problems and go to other cities and states and start it all over again.

Fewer traffic stops could also be a covid thing, if you think about it. Don't think anybody is getting stopped around here unless they're obviously a danger.

Incentives matter. The Minneapolis City Council made it clear that they do not have the back of the PD, but they do support rioters and looters. That's a terrible environment to do police work in but it is what they have created.

Reinforcements are not coming. Translation? You're on your own. That's why you can't afford to elect a gun grabber as president. Left to him, the only constitutional defense against lawlessness will begin to be eroded. They will ban a certain type of gun, then another saying it is just as bad, then another, and another. You get the idea. They'll also try to make ammunition harder to get. They'll also try to legislate the gun manufacturers out of business by opening them up to lawsuits for negligent use of their product.

2A is literally on the ballot this year.

And people wonder why they call these kinda places "flyover states". You're a moron to put down roots in a place with clowns like this running the show. If you're still there after everything they showed you this summer you absolutely deserve to be fucked.

not really. "flyover state" is a term of elitist coastal bigotry. it's more about shitting on anything that isn't a megacity. it's more of a thing said by New England/West Coast bigots and media sycophants.

doesn't really have to do with... whatever the fuck this is. this is just a Dem city fucking up.
