Miyamoto keeps ruining your childhood: "Mario is 24 or 25 years old."

So this is some bullshit.

Mario, probably the most recognisable video game character in the world, is only 24 years old—according to the man who created him, Shigeru Miyamoto.

From his lustrous moustache, his generous gut, and the fact that British actor Bob Hoskins was 50 years old when he played him in the Super Mario Bros movie, Nintendo fans have generally assumed to have been of more middle-aged mien, but this is not at all the case.

In a Japanese interview from 2005 which was recently reposted by Nintendo, Miyamoto claimed that Mario's age is the only thing that's definite about the character.

"I think it was fortuitous that we didn't put any restrictions on Mario as a character," he said in the footage. "Normally when you create a character and present him to the world, all the details get filed in: what's his favourite colour? what kind of food does he like to eat?"

"But aside from the fact that he's about 24-25 years old, we didn't define anything else."

Source: Arstechnica (it's also elsewhere on the web)

I have always perceived Mario as being around 40 years old. Even removed from Bob Hoskins playing him, he just doesn't look anywhere under 35 years old.

First his retconning of the Koopa Kids not being Bowser's children, now this? What's next? Peach is 14?

// Mod Edit:

Before you judge, consider the impact of facial hair on perceived age!

// AuthenticM Edit:

I think if you give this model actual textures and lighting, such as subsurface scattering, he'll look much older!

He's just saying this so jaded people in their 20s truly have no excuse.

Or he's using his power to troll fans for kicks, who wouldn't? Next week: "Luigi's not actually his brother, Yoshi is Princess Zelda in disguise, Ganondorf was the blue Ice Climber all along"

I also love how he thinks defining Mario's favorite color or favorite food would be restrictive on the character, as opposed to lining out his freaking age.

See with Luigi this doesn't seem too odd to me, something about Mario's more diminutive form and bumpier stache just doesn't fit though.

That sounds... Almost Unreal

(that song was the only good thing about the Super Mario Bros movie)

No he's not. He's not younger than me, that's just stupid. Doesn't matter though, between this shit and the Zelda timeline, I ignore what Nintendo says is canon about their games. I make it whatever I want it to be.
