MK8 battle mode is terrible

Honestly I think MK8 is a great game but the battle mode is an embarrassment. Full courses with more frequent item blocks. No arenas. Most time is spent trying to find someone.

I hope that they built the game to support the addition of arenas.

It's like finding out that the cherry on your ice cream sundae is a tomato. It's not going to ruin it but it's not what you expected when you bit into it.

I think we knew about this for awhile though. There was a big thread on it a couple months back.

Definitely sucks though.

I hadn't really been paying attention to MK8 news. I was shocked. Don't understand why they would release it like that.

I haven't even played battle mode yet and can tell you it's shit. Something tells me they were desperate to get the game out and couldn't be bothered with battle mode. What a joke.

It feels like it's only there because it used to be.

It's not justified by content, only expectation.

My theory is they worked so long on making the main part of the game awesome, and then they looked at the calender like "fuck Iwata pls we need more time, there are no options in this game, barebones features, single player is wack, we don't even have a battle mode yet :("

and Iwata laughed and told them mothafuckas it coming out in May, hold dat shit

What? Man I might not buy it now since they completely didn't even try at all on the battle mode. I love battle mode in Mario Kart 7. 6 stages, 2 different modes, online was fun! But Mario Kart 8 doesn't even have dedicated battle mode stages? The heck?

It's pretty shit, but there's some merit to the idea of running through a course backwards & forwards simutaniously. I wouldn't mind a special cup where the second lap was reversed. It's not Battle Mode though, and that's a real fuckup for a mode that (in some installments) was more popular than the actual racing.

This was really disappointing in MK8. If they wanted to change Battle, they could have just lifted the Battle Race from Sonic Racing Transformed. Either that or just bring back Arenas.

Yes it's as foolish as it sounds.

Most disappointing part of the game, for sure. It's such a half-assed way of including battle mode.

it's tragic :(

here's hoping for DLC arenas

Yup, the broken battle mode is really holding this game back from being a classic. My friends (who adore the N64 version) were eagerly demanding we try battle mode -- I tried to warn them, but they waved it off. As soon as we started, all the enthusiasm disappeared. "What the hell is this?" was the general sentiment.

They need to add those arenas back post-E3. I hope that's something they already have underway.

Nice try Evilore!
I don't know about you guys, but I've had an ungodly amount of connection errors.

Maybe they should've cut this garbage battle mode to focus more on whatever is causing this shit.

I played battle mode twice and never looked back. It's truly terrible. Not only do you never encounter someone else, but due to the time limit no matches are actually being played to the end. It's absolutely no fun that way.

It's incredibly disappointing Nintendo decided to forgo asynchronous multiplayer for Mario Kart 8. Nintendoland's Mario Chase set-up, but with karts, in racing arenas, could've been the next evolution of Battle mode. Instead, they opted to devolve that mode.

Nintendo often makes a good game and then leaves something unspeakably shitty in the game. Skyward Sword had Fi and Tadtones, Mario Party Island Tour lacked team mini games, Brawl had tripping, etc.

What is this? I can't even..

No he's right. Even in SMK the GOAT(rip feather), one person would drive around the edge and the other would try to chase, until one person said fuck it and decides to sit in the middle. This is also why there is still splitscreen on the gamepad, because screenlooking is required for battle mode, which is why the only hope in it's online inclusion was that you can have 12 people at once. Holy shit N64 Donut whatever was a boring nightmare, and that was with four people. Do you guys not remember this? Thank goodness we had waverace.

Why does NoA still not have SMK? I need it, it has my favorite driving model after MK8.

Oh my goodness, this would have been amazing. And it makes so much sense. Ugh. Hopefully there will be some DLC.

It also feels like all newer concepts are also made for racing. Like new items, characters, kart customization. Nothing made for a battle mode and stuff like false item boxes that made that mode are cut out.

Has Nintendo done any interviews where they talk about why they went in this direction with the Battle Mode? Everything else about the game is so good, so it's really strange that they essentially butchered a mode that worked so well.

A tomato on my ice cream sunday? That would definitely ruin it for me. But since I prefer the racing to battle mode the shortcomings of it don't bother me too much. It's certainly disappointing though

I don't even have the game but found it extremely sad when I saw on twitch that battle mode was racing with ballons.

MK64 is still the best Mario kart to play with friends in my opinion.
