Campaign Info known so far (DON'T READ IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SPOILERS)

Modern Warfare 2 is set several years after the conclusion of Call of Duty 4. The radical Russian Ultranationalist organization has returned to prominence under the leadership of Vladimir Makarov, a former associate of Imran Zakhaev with his own ambitions. Makarov has publicized Zakhaev's death as an act of martyrdom to garner support for his cause, enabling him to build a strong power base in Russia over the years. Fearful of Makarov's growing influence, the global community established Task Force 141 to counter the threat posed by the resurgent Ultranationalists.

During the single-player campaign, the player will take on the role of Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, a young member of an elite, multinational commando unit known as Task Force 141. The player character in Call of Duty 4, Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish, returns as a non-playable character; promoted to captain in the Special Air Service, MacTavish is now the head of the Task Force and Sanderson's superior officer. A third member of the Task Force is Ghost, a mysterious character who conceals his face with a skull-imprinted balaclava.

Characters:
Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson will be a playable character.
Captain "Soap" MacTavish (a playable character from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) will return as a non-playable character. He has a mohawk and a model of his head will be sold with the prestige edition.
Vladimir Makarov will be the new leader of the Ultranationalists and the main villain of the game, following the footsteps of Imran Zakhaev. His image is previously unknown.
Major Petrov is the airfield commander in the level Cliffhanger and was probably killed as Roach and Soap eliminate all the enimies at the hangar unless he wasn't in your line of sight.
"Ghost" will be a character part of Task Force 141 and will also be included in the Modern Warfare 2: Ghost six part comic series. He wears red ski goggles/sunglasses and a skull patterned face covering.
Royce is a character seen in the Rio de Janiero video. Not much is known about him at the moment, but he is probably a member of Task Force 141. Judging by his accent, he is American.
Rojas is an arms dealer located in Rio De Janiero. He wears a brown T shirt and 3 quarter pants. He is seen in the Worldwide trailer.
"Meat" is a character briefly seen and heard in the Rio De Janiero video. At about 0:45 in the video you can hear one of your squadmates say "Meat, get these civvies out of here", at which point Meat begins yelling at them in Portuguese. Very little else is known about him. When he says "Roger that" it seems his accent is American. He may be the man who wears a helmet.
Unidentified American member of Task Force 141 is a character in Task Force 141 and seen in the Worldwide trailer rappeling up a helicopter from a castle. He is big and has a shaven head. The trailer proves he is American because he has an American flag on his arm.
Faust is a character who is an associate of Rojas seen in the Rio De Janiero level. He is shot in the leg by Roach.

NPCs will carry customized weaponry, similar to custom classes made by players in multiplayer. A number of combinations were seen in the '09 E3 Demo, including AK-47s with ACOG Scope and FAMAS with Red Dot Sight. In response to questions about the length of the single-player campaign, Infinity Ward CCO Jason West stated that Modern Warfare 2 would not be longer than the 6-10 hour-long campaign of Call of Duty 4. Mission settings in the game will include Russia, a military base in Kazakhstan, a desert area in Afghanistan, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Special Ops Mode Info known so far

A new Special Ops mode will include two-player cooperative play. Special Ops mode will include 23 action missions similar to Mile High Club which will be more difficult than normal campaign missions and will not be related to the main storyline. It will supposedly pick out certain parts of the single player campaign that "work well with co-op". Missions are unlocked by earning stars, which are acquired by playing levels at certain difficulties. Regular difficulty earns one star, hardened earns two, and veteran earns three. Missions will be divided by groups, called Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo, the last said to be the hardest. Within the groups there are types of missions such as "Breach and Clear" and "Elimination". There will even be special enemy types, such as those using riot shields, or even Special Ops exclusive "Juggernauts" wearing heavy armor. The general Spec Ops missions fall into the following categories.

Assault – Sends you through a level to take down targets while avoiding civilians
Stealth – Has you sneak past enemies
Wave Defense – Spawn’s five increasingly harder waves – just like GoW2’s Horde Mode
Elimination – Drops you into a level with a set number of spawning enemies
Snowmobile Time Trials – Get to the finish line as quick as possible
Snowmobile Combat – Race against, and shoot your friend
AC-130 – One man in the gunship handles fire support, while one man on the ground has a laser sight on his rifle calling down death from above.

The known list of spec missions names currently are:

01. Breach and Clear
02. O Cristo Redentor
03. Sniper Fi
04. Hidden

Or maybe they just don't like getting people hyped up and disappointed for something that isn't happening. Especially in light of them not having annouced a beta at all.

It could also easily be that.
Yes, clearly possible. The only thing to do is hope, wait and see...

The moderators at the IW forums are just normal dudes like you and I and have absolutely no knowledge about what the beta plans are, if any. They have a single thread for beta information and discussion and until anything is officially announced, they've been closing every other thread. There's no reason to believe the case is any different here.

Customizable Kill Streak

You will be able to select 3 Kill streaks ranging from killcounts of 3 to 15. They have not all been revealed yet.

3 - UAV: Deploys a UAV to scan the map and reveal enemy locations.
4 - Care Package: "Air drop a random killstreak or ammo". Deploys by throwing a red smoke grenade. The care package can be picked up by anyone once it hits the ground, including the enemy team.
4 - Counter-UAV: Blocks an enemy UAV.
5 - Sentry Gun: Allows the player to deploy an automated XM312 machinegun. The gun automatically fires at enemies in its line of sight, but it can be destroyed by enemy fire.
5 - Predator Missile: Fires a controllable missile at a designated target area. However, the user is defenseless while controlling the missile.
6 - Precision Airstrike: Initiates an airstrike on a targeted area much like the Airstrike in Call of Duty 4. However, the user can now control the direction the airstrike comes from.
7 - Attack Helicopter: Deploys a helicopter to attack enemy players.
9 - Pave Low: Deploys a Sikorsky MH-53. Described as a more heavily armored attack helicopter.
11 - AC-130: Deploys an AC-130 gunship that the player controls. However, the user is defenseless while commanding the AC-130.

Weapon List known so far

This is a list of all weapons that have been identified in official media for Modern Warfare 2. P.S. - Be warned. There are many videos and websites telling you about the weapons of Modern Warfare 2. When held, the shield protects the player from weapons fire from the front, but will become riddled with bullet impacts and make visibility very difficult. Customizable Callsign

Customizable Call signs/Nametag will be implemented in the game.

2dkwppd.jpg

2mealgo.jpg

When you kill an opponent in the multiplayer, not only does it say who you killed but it will also present their in-game info, like what rank they are and such.

"When you first start out you only have a few titles and emblems," Bowling told MTV News. New titles and emblems will appear according to weapon usage, in-game actions and rank.

"As you rank up, you automatically get a new title. Llike I’m a sergeant, now I have a Sergeant title. But now say, when I was ranking up I only used pistols, so now you’ll not only get icons for your rank, you’ll also get titles and emblems that are pistol-focused."

Just how many unlockable status titles can you potentially activate to show to your multiplayer pals? Bowling said Infinity Ward isn't releasing the exact number, but he did give a fuzzy figure of "several hundred."

"You might see one that you have no idea how you get it, what they did to get it," he explained. But that's how the fun and surprises happen. Bowling revealed that new callsigns will be added in future patches, and current callsigns come from behavior he's already observed.

"Like with 'Call of Duty 4,' we had this player called Only Use Knife. All he ever did was stab people. I’d play games with him and all he does is hide in a bush and run out and stab people. He’s never shot a weapon. We checked his profile, and he’s never killed anyone with a bullet. So now he has like 30,000 knife kills."

Even beyond kills, whether its camping, moving in special ways or figuring out how to use your environment, any in-game actions you take can accumulate and label you for other players. Even if a title isn't already waiting to be unlocked, if players are doing it, Bowling wants to reward them.

"I’m very excited that we’ve announced callsigns, because now I can go to the community before we ship and say, here they are – what do you think? What do you think would be good ones?" he said.

Adding new callsigns won't be where new patches and uses for the feature end. Bowling fully intends to take them beyond Xbox Live and Infinity Ward's website.

"I totally plan to do Facebook Connect integrations, Twitter stuff, and an iPhone app," he noted.

His ultimate hope though? He sounded mischievous when mentioning how specific some of the action combinations will have to be to unlock a callsign. In his words, he's very confident in the challenges ahead for players:

"We did stuff that we think are crazy and most people will never see."

Future DLC Plans

Activision has announced that they plan to release a minimum of two downloadable map packs for Modern Warfare 2. Microsoft announced at E3 2009 that these map packs would be available for the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live before they would be released on other platforms.

"As far as DLC goes, we love it and plan to support Modern Warfare 2 heavily with post-launch support," Bowling told MTV Multiplayer. "We've confirmed we'll be doing AT LEAST two map packs which were announced at E3 as a timed exclusive for Xbox 360. The fact that we confirmed at least two map packs doesn't mean there won't be more; honestly we plan on shaping our DLC based on community feedback from the full game, and first two DLC map packs. Therefore, the community will really determine what comes after that."

Miscellaneous Info

*Kill Streaks confirmed to exist from the range of 3 to 15. You will be able to assign them before a game although no exact confirmation on how but most likely through something similar to the barracks option in COD 4 wouldn't seem to be an unreasonable speculation. It will function as an either or situation. For example a less experienced or less good player might want to only stick to the short kill streak rewards but a more skilled or higher level player may want to stick to the longer streak rewards for example since they are more powerful.
* Grenades have post lob physics meaning they will roll after you toss them. For instance if you tossed them up an incline they could roll back towards you.
* Host Migration implemented
* Continuous spawning of enemy AI has been reduced in single player according to IW.
* AI has improved in the single player according to OXM
* Double attachments have been added, as you can see what appears to be a Kriss with both a suppressor and a reflex sight.
* Like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the are no controllable vehicles in multiplayer.
* Akimbo-style dual weapon combat is confirmed for sidearm style weapons.
* Throwing knives confirmed in game.
* Riot Shields confirmed in game.
* Secondary Weapons expanded beyond just pistols. All these secondary weapons can take attachments just like the primaries can.
* Suppressors are now available for shotguns and sniper rifles.
* For the Callsigns there are 294 unlockable emblems and 594 pre-made titles.
* There are 70 levels of advancement in the multiplayer mode versus the 55 in COD 4.

Info on Modern Warfare 2: Ghost comic

DC Comics subsidiary Wildstorm is about to add another notch to its "video game-to-comic book adaptation" belt, if such a thing weren't too preposterous to exist. The etching can be attributed to its upcoming illustrated stab at Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 in a six-part comic mini-arc, which will be aptly titled Modern Warfare 2: Ghost.

David Lapham, writer and illustrator of the fantastic Stray Bullets series, will reprise these roles for the Ghost-ly comics. Robert Bowling revealed the first piece of Lapham's art on his Twitter yesterday (posted above), but has yet to announce a street date for the comic. Our prediction? Around the same time as the game. Our other prediction? All other comics that were supposed to come out in November will be delayed until Q1 2010.

Bowling just sent over a friendly message expounding upon a few Modern Warfare 2: Ghost details. The cover art was actually done by Federico Dallocchio, who worked on WildStorm's Gears of War and StarCraft comic adaptations. The rest of the art is being handled by former Guardians of the Galaxy artist Kevin West. Lapham has been tasked with writing the actual story of the mini-series

Only Two Modern Warfare 2 Map Packs Planned
by Chris Faylor Aug 06, 2009 10:21am CST tags: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, DLC
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Though we've known for a while that two downloadable Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 map packs will hit Xbox 360 first before any other platform, it now appears that those two map packs are to be the entirety of the shooter's post-release DLC support.

"We plan to launch two separate map packs for this title [in 2010]," Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith said of Mordern Warfare 2 in a conference call, adding that thus far, over 8 million Call of Duty map pack downloads have been sold on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Oh come on! Why only two map packs when they know people are going to buy them up?

Wtf is wrong with these guys?

These map packs better come with AT LEAST 4 maps.

Thought I would post this. I hope we get more than 2 map packs unless they are big map packs. Like 6 or 7 maps in each one I'm talking.

2 map packs kinda lame. Twice more than CoD4 though

I would love to play SF Hospital* in CoD4

*Americas Army map-assault side run to roof, throw nade at 9:36 if you get the angle right at 9:30 the grenade will blow up just as the VIP is exiting through the front of the hospital

Same here. I would be up for a MW2 Beta...if it is true of course. :lol

It would indeed be awesome, but Infinity Ward announced the CoD4 beta last time around long before it actually came out. At E3, I believe. Maybe they will pull a fast one on us though who knows.

I don't have a problem with a small amount of map packs. I'm only worried about what the quality of those maps will be. Out of MW's map packs I really liked Chinatown/Carrentan all the others were okay but to each his own. But would this have anything to do with limiting MW2's "life cycle" so the next Call of Duty can scoop in the hungry players craving for a new game?

To be fair they are talking about what somebody said at a conference call and extrapolating a bit. Plans could change or more map packs could come or he may have only wanted to mention 2. But I agree. One more map pack than we got with COD 4 is not what I want. Especially when WAW has already gotten three.

only so much content you can release within a 12 month window.

I don't know. WAW has already done three and if they really wanted I'm sure they could do a fourth this year.

Its a bit annoying because you know it doesn't take them this long to crank out a map and if it does they need to staff up to crank out more and get help from an outside dev.

The map packs will generate between 10 and 20 million dollars a piece. I don't understand why they wouldn't make more than two.

If it's not announced by the end of GamesCon, you're probably right.

Especially when it was an almost near universal complaint that COD 4 didn't get enough post game support. I understand it maybe for COD 4 because that game exploding like it did was a bit of a surprise but everybody knows MW 2 will be a massive hit. And it doesn't end up being a drag on the next series as each game is able to cultivate its own audience. I'm hoping this is just a situation where all they are willing to talk about at the moment is the first two map packs. No reason we shouldn't be able to get at least 3 imo and ideally 4 otherwise they are just leaving money on the table like they did with COD 4.

For all the shit CoD5 got it at least gave GREAT support to it's game to Nazi Zombie mode and 3 map packs. With Gears and halo having over 12 maps of content I would hope IW would at least try to continue to release content.

Sol..

I am Wayne Brady.
oo 2 map maps.

I can't wait to see the playlist list. deathmatch, map pack 1 deathmatch, map pack 2 deathmatch.

Damn things mess up everything. But the money makes the coochie go woo wooooo.

I wouldn't get too worked up about the map packs yet. It just means that currently there are only two of them planned, they could always do more. They haven't said anything about extra Special Ops missions either, which I'm guessing will have some DLC incoming for it as well.

Agreed. I think most of us are still just wary after the lone COD 4 map pack experience. ;)

I deleted my CoD4 map pack (got it in game of the year edition)...

The maps sucked! I love all the originals except Wetwork...

I didn't play much cod5. I'm curious about a few things - How many maps were in each of those map packs and how much did they cost? Did you end up liking them? Thanks.

I'm asking because I think COD5 might be a better indicator of what kind of dlc you'll get with mw2 than cod4 is.

I think they were 10 bucks each and had 3 regular maps and a Zombie map each.

Now that I think about it I wonder when we're going to hear something about Special Ops. I'm really curious to get a look at that.

With only 3 maps, how did they handle the many game types? I think that was a lot of people's complaints about the one mappack cod4 had. It had 3.5 maps in a way.

As much as I'd LOVE for there to be a beta for MW2 (I was in the COD4 & COD:WAW betas from day 1 and played the hell out of them), they were both already announced by this time of the year, so unless they're switching things up this time around, I wouldn't hold your breath for a beta...

But by all means, please prove me wrong IW!

I don't see why IW wouldn't do a BETA for MW2. Get the community to help balance out the weapons as much as possible.

If it weren't for the BETA for MW1, the M4 Carbine wouldn't have been adjusted. During the BETA, the M4 was essentially the M16 with auto-fire with barely no recoil.

I think we can all agree they "should" do a beta. The reality is though that the financial imperative isn't there to force them to do one like it was arguably in the past. Betas on consoles are mostly marketing and preordering gimmicks even though some useful info and balancing details are gleaned from them. The problem in this case is that MW 2 doesn't really need the marketing or pre-order gimmick. It's already the most preordered game in Activision history according to them. So sadly I'm also in the camp that it's unlikely we will get a beta. But I would also love to be proven wrong.

If Activision were smart they would put a MW2 beta in a game, like DJ Hero. Since no one's gonna buy it. Or GH:VH, whichever.

Also sadly agreed. :lol

You use a beta to help prop up your existing product or another product that needs a little bit of help. Maybe Borderlands should have the beta. :D I was going to buy that one anyway.

Dude at Game Stop told me he had 200 beta keys for reserving MW2, so I reserved it(ps3) and I was 170 or something. He said the beta would probably come out in Sept.

Did I just get owned?

Crap like WaW gets 3 mappacks but only 2 for the MW2? wtf. I wonder if IW will be working on a sequel instead of supporting the product like last time around....

The reality is that on 2 year cycle a large portion of the team does legit have to transition to the new product. What we can hope for is that they have been able to learn from COD 4 and staff up enough so that they can keep a small dedicated crew on the current game working on map packs or balance fixes. I believe Treyarch outsources some of that work on the map packs for instance to an outside group.

In regards to the WaW map packs, I think Treyarch were able to get 3 packs made because they had a lot more time to work on them considering WaW was based on the CoD4 engine and files. Outside of small tweaks and additions, they probably didn't spend much time on the engine where as IW had to create their own engine and as a result didn't have much time to spend on creating maps.

Well technically IW doesn't create the engine from scratch everytime. They basically tweak it and improve although you are right in that Treyarch has a big leg up because they tend to get whatever benefits the main group does. Sort of like how NCAA Football and Madden sort of share certain benefits naturally because they are based off the same engine.

I've never played CoD4's MP. Judging from MW2's MP video, it seems pretty hectic. Are there any online matches where they can be slow and quiet? Besides snipers only of course. My guess is just have 10 players total, but I just want to hear the environment and that's it. That quiet and lonely feeling trying to find someone and kill them.

In hardcore playlist and depending on the map yes. There are only 16 people in most of the games if you are playing on a console. It's not trying to be Operation Flashpoint though. It's sort of an arcadey take on a miltiary shooter so if you are looking for the most realistic miltary sim you should pass. If you are looking for a game that's extremely fun and intense with a touch of realism then COD is more like that.

if you play on PC? where they ban propipes. I played S&D HC last night for about three hours and probably got pro piped 20 times at the beginning of the round.

Fucking noobs.

Its Hectic because of the Air Strikes and Helicopters.

The Hardcore modes and Search and Destroy are probably what you're looking for.

"Hardcore" mode is where the total amount of HP is really low so you'll end up dying a lot faster than in the regular modes and you don't have a HUD. Because of this, matches tend to go on a lot longer because people are more cautious.

Search and Destroy is a mode where there are multiple rounds, the first to 4 wins, where one side is trying to destroy an objective while the other is trying to defend the objective. What sets it apart is each person has one life per round so if you die, you have to wait till the next round.

Yeah, Search and Destroy is a gametype you might be interested in. There are two bomb sites and the teams take turns trying to set the bomb. Once you die your out until the next round, so people play pretty conservatively. It also seems to matter based on the quality of the team your on. if your on a good team that works together, the game gets very methodical and strategic, but if your losing pretty bad and getting spawn killed it's crazy frustrating.

Activision will not let IW release any content that may take attention away from CoD7. When they can sell a $60 game to 5 million people or a $10 map pack to less than half of those people, they'll go where the money is. You think there will be any WaW content after CoD6?

If IW can plan to release more than 2 map packs before the PR for CoD7 rolls around we may see more. If you think Activision sees the Treyarch community as consisting of anything but bored IW gamers, you're mistaken.

This is certainly a valid skeptical attitude to take based on activision or even economics in general although I would argue this short term idea simply isn't accouting for the entire market. There are lots of gamers like me who won't buy WAW but will keep paying and playing for MW 2 content. I know its anecdotal but I'm thinking I'm not the only one.

Now there does become a point arguably where you have to move on to the next product and start trying to transition customers to MW 3 where support for MW 2 is economically cutting into that.

But I think they (Activision) should be doing more to cultivate Waw and MW into separate audiences so it makes sense to support them in a different manner.

Although as I said I agree Activision as company may be looking only in the short term when I think there is a slightly healthier long term approach to be taken.

I'm ok with two map packs as long as they have more than 4 maps on them and as long as the original game comes with as many maps, or more maps than cod4 did. It gives me time to stop playing the darn thing so I can anticipate the sequel. If I were still playing cod4 now, I don't know what i'd think of a sequel. I'd probably be sick of it to be honest. That's kinda what happened to WaW with me. Luckily, I didn't care for it so now I have a year off of playing this series and I'm ready to get back into it.

And of course quality > quantity. I'll gladly pay money for 4 or 5 great maps that I want to play over and over again, not 6 or 7 mediocre ones.
