Modern Warfare Overhaul Was “Fake” According to Dev, Says He’s Gotten Death Threats From Community

Back in the first week of November, a rumor from a reliable source surfaced stating that a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare overhaul was incoming, and how the mini map would once again include red dots like in previous franchise entries, much to the dismay of a lot of Call of Duty veterans (including this guy), the Modern Warfare overhaul — or anything close to it — didn’t happen.

Over on Twitter, Co-Design Director Joe Cecot replied to a fan asking where the overhaul was, and said that it was a “fake statement” to get attention.

While Infinity Ward didn’t roll out an overhaul patch for Modern Warfare, Senior Communications Manager Ashton Williams got the ball rolling when she tweeted how a “big” update that fans were “asking about” was set to be released, which when it did (patch 1.09), didn’t really change anything big. Once update 1.09 dropped, and it didn’t provide an overhaul, things got very messy on the Modern Warfare subreddit. Members of the community kept posting threads asking about the overhaul, and it seems even the devs themselves didn’t get spared, and have appeared to be less active in answering the community’s concerns.

In one particular thread, Cecot mentioned how things can be “rough” in the Modern Warfare subreddit, and how he even got PMs (private messages) on how his children should die “horrible deaths.” He also mentioned how he’s spending less time in the subreddit as well.

Any lying prick deserves some backlash but death threats? Thats too much. When will the gaming community ever grow up and stop this shit? Why people don't imagine shit happening to them before they go on and do it to other people?

The gaming community is getting more and more toxic. I’m not surprised anymore by the way they behave.

Not being able to see enemy gunfire on the mini map sucks. Its too hard to tell where people are, which means no one wants to move, which makes the games very slow. I also hate the skill based match making.
I wont buy any CoD games in the future that have these two things.

I think the biggest problem is the sound, the sounds I'm supposed to hear I'm not hearing and the ones that are not important I hear too much. Comparing to CS, I hear a person shoot his rifle or his footsteps, I can pinpoint the location instantly, in cod:MW I can't.

I don't get why Skill based match making is bad, didn't see anywhere that someone posted the pros and cons. To me it sounds like that system should be in every game.

I get that there are a lot of angry idiots, but realistically how many of these threats do people actually get? I'm almost at the point of just not believing them. It just feels like the best cop out honestly :/ Kinda sad I have to doubt it but I just hear this excuse way too much these days.

There is zero incentive to improve as you're only going to be put in with better players. It makes playing the game a slog.

The system can, and is, being abused by people reverse boosting. If you don't know what that means, players are intentionally killing themselves so the SBMM will then put them in with worse players. Currently the system evaluates your last 5 games and matches you accordingly. Lobbies are broken up after every game now. Remember when you used to get into rivalries with players? That's gone now, due to the SBMM.

The only reason SBMM exists is to try and protect new players. It doesn't. Everyone gets slaughtered when they first play CoD. That is what makes you get better.

It's a moronic system and has no place in these games.

People cry too much. Yea the game camper friendly af. But its cod, you really expect them to "overhaul" anything? They're lying pricks.

But we're acting like death threats are a new thing. Plenty of devs have gotten that shit on twitter already. Its not surprising just by reading reactions from these childish so called "gamers" on places like gaf, resetera, and reddit.

Did he even lie? I'm looking at this from the outside and all I get is that this "overhaul" was by all accounts a rumor, and not even one from a direct source (TGR).

As to what Cecot said, how is this:
We are constantly updating the game at least once a week, sometimes twice.
Not both an acceptable alternative statement going forwards, and a positive in itself?

Also the definition of Death Threats is really something nowdays, some random dude telling me KYS on a social media or a videogame is not a death treath.
Someone pulling a knife on you or describing the bedroom of your children is an actual threat.

In the OT some gaffer ended up in a game with a guy who 1-98 or something. :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Lmfao thats sad. The time I have to game is definitely not for me to kill myself 100 times in 5 matches just to get easier lobbies 🤣🤣🤣.

If everyone starts doing it, they'll probably all end up in the same lobbies anyway 🤔🤔🤔

Not according to this , which was literally the first thing that popped-up after doing a Google search.

I also suspect that the "big update" that the official IW Twitter mentions is for the BattlePass/DLC Season update, as opposed to an "overhaul". A term no dev would use lightly by the way as it implies what's in there is hopelessly broken or unworthy.

The 'big update' was a bunch of minor patches and nerfs.

Lol that post by the dev is such bullshit and pisses me off so much. They have gotten thousands of respectful post and messages asking them to address huge that is ruining the experience for people who bought the game and have ignored all of them.

That post is nothing but an excuse to make everyone feel sorry for them.

I do feel like I was tricked into getting the game. The beta was good but the maps in the full game are complete shit for the most part, the beta maps are pretty much the best ones.

Out of the 6 TDM maps that shipped with it, only Hackney Yard is any good. And it's not even that good. The rest are appalling, in my opinion.

They added Shoothouse which is probably the best in the game.

I couldn't give a toss, as I don't have a dog in this fight personally. I'm just looking at the facts of the case.

Which in this instance is that the rumor of an "overhaul" specifically came from a non-official source. The official IW post referencing a "big update" being mistaken as corroboration.

Bottom line, you can't expect devs and players to have the same perspective. Devs know what's going on, because they are the ones doing the work, not poring over every rumor and comment on the internet. Fans have the reverse viewpoint, being immersed in the minutia of the culture and discussion whilst not having any idea of where the product is going beyond what they are told.

Think about it.

I don't know why people are complaining about the red dots. Almost everyone used a silencer in the other games to avoid that.

I moved around just fine in the game. People camp because the damage is so high. I would like it more if you could take a few more bullets.

I'm sure they've nerfed some stuff since I played. But the weapon balance at launch was awful.

People here saying that speaking about death threats is crying for attention... What a fucking shame to think that, honestly.
I think because when you piss off 10s of thousands of your customers, many of them being teenage boys, you're going to inevitably have your choice of stupid and gross comments. They have had plenty of valid criticism that has been communicated in a reasonable way and largely ignored it. Death threats are not even allowed on public channels.

Has less to do with the gaming community and more to do with social media turning everyone into raging pricks who don't care who they hurt. That applies to every single group as well, since it makes it super easy to not think of your *enemies* as human beings anymore.

I don't play CoD, so I don't really have a dog in this fight.

But that is some S-tier stupidity on the part of that developer. He should have delivered some PR canned response to the query rather than admit to their outright lie. This is why there should be a public relations person in charge of communication with the customer base rather than the devs themselves. They are not trained to handle customer service and oftentimes will make stupid mistakes like this.

As for the death threats, yeah it sucks. But seriously? Deal with it. I have family members who work in the call center business and they routinely receive shit like this from people. You deal with a million customers and one or two of them is going to be an asshole who is going to make threats. I'm sorry but his isn't a situation that's unique to gaming and these devs are acting like a bunch of snowflakes.

Honestly bringing the attention of death threats is important, because it has hit a new high over the last few years. We should never say it's a "cry for attention" no matter who it's coming from, that shit sucks, and should be taken seriously. Sure, majority of the time it's just talk coming from sad pricks that won't do a damn thing, but it doesn't get any less demeaning or exhausting. No one should have to hear that, especially when they're doing their job.

When I was a Community Manager for a few titles I got quite a bit of that nonsense, just a WHOLE lot of toxic behavior. It was disgusting, and these titles were minuscule compared to something like COD. I can't even imagine how frequent it must be.

I love it. Everytime. Like Pavlov's fucking dog, all you need is to take a few troll/shitposts call it the big scary term 'death threat', totally valid application of it btw/s, and the white knights come out of the woodwork to cry about it.

"QQ death thread BAAAD." Wow, so moral and heroic. Don't come across like gullible retards at all. Especially when the sociopathic exploit this to associate valid criticsm with it, so that the first thing all the mongoloids will do is ree about 'death threats' whenever the topic comes up.

It's trigger warning shit taken to the next level. Remember every YT cuckold doing those back when? Well meaning, at its heart, but completely bereft of comprehension of reality. It's a good way to tell who's atleast somewhat autistic.

I don't think he's telling the truth, but whether he is or not... this game really needed an overhaul, it would have made the game so much better because we can only play on these horrible maps for so long. No joke, it could have went from the worst CoD of all time to one of the best this gen, like WWII.

I think the biggest problem is the sound, the sounds I'm supposed to hear I'm not hearing and the ones that are not important I hear too much. Comparing to CS, I hear a person shoot his rifle or his footsteps, I can pinpoint the location instantly, in cod:MW I can't.

If you don't get it, then you haven't played CoD games for the last 7 years, it has ruined the franchise. I don't get how anybody can defend SBMM when it makes the game sweatier and more frustrating to play, and in reality it's made only for the new players and us experienced players get left in the dust playing against people who have less stats than they really should. The issue is with the fact that matchmaking is putting us up against better players, not equal players, 90% of the time, it's the most flawed matchmaking system.

If developers had "data" on it, then they should have no problem revealing it to the public.

People wanna dump on n00bs and not have to try too hard.
But it's a casual game... why should skill matter above fun? How can you sweat on a game for hours on end? That's the issue with the newer CoD games, you have to sweat as much as possible and now you can't play MP longer than a couple of games even though we want to play for hours. You simply don't get it, sure we want to play against new players and make the game easier (duh), but in actuality all we want is to not be put in sweaty lobbies with players better than us... average players are fine.

Crying about death threats in itself is just attention bait. No one's gonna do shit.
Until it happens

Death threats are to be taken seriously, because if not, a life is lost
This is why you can get arrested for threatening a police officer or military personel, or possibly killed yourself by those people

Anonymity is a powerful weapon.

But, tbh nowadays everyone baits for attention. So I would be careful with some responses. Its easy to generalize or even invent an excuse when everything resolves around "death threats".

People can threaten me all the want, I'm the one with the guns and the willingness to use them if they even attempt to bring harm to myself or my family. Also - it's the fucking internet. Some pussy ass keyboard warrior getting all hot over some bullshit update for a video game needs a reality check. There are more important things to worry about.

I'm having a blast with multiplayer and could careless about some update that will adjust hip fire by .0445 millimeters on my M4. Just play the game and have fun. Death threats to developers are just ridiculous and uncalled for. I feel bad for the devs that have to deal with that, my condolences.

A big update with some good stuff in there? Well they didn't promise a complete overhaul in that post at least.
“The big update you all keep asking about” come on now, they took advantage of it and ended up not being a “big update” even.

Gotta say, as stupid as weapon balance can be at times, this game is hilarious fun. It's the first CoD I've bought (except for CoD 4 at a Goodwill).

That said, hopefully the big update fixes people's grievances. I don't know shit about what is necessary but the "skill based" matchmaking sounds broken as shit.

Edit:

Damn didn't realize the update already went out and didn't do much. Bummer.
