MotorStorm 2 to have impressive GUI

Not much but it's news straight from the devs directly about the sequel which is a first I believe.

Happy new year everyone, I hope you all enjoyed the holidays, I know I did!

The majority of us are now all back in the office, slugging away to make our next game the best we've ever done, so all you lucky people can enjoy the very best that our future games will have to offer! And on that note, I'd like to have a quick chat about what I'm currently working on for the sequel to MotorStorm: the GUI (Graphical User Interface). We've been working on the design of the GUI for several months, taking what we did for MotorStorm and throwing it out the window, completely starting from scratch.

We've approached the design of the GUI from a fresh angle and I think we've come up with something pretty impressive, both functionally and artistically. At the moment we have a solid design and a basic, functional GUI comprised of placeholder art and text, nothing to write home about! However, we are just about to get started on implementing the incredible art that the Graphic Design team has come up with so we can start getting a real sense of how the GUI will finally work, both visually and functionally. Unfortunately I can't go into any more detail than that at the moment, but I'll be writing more on this as we move further along in development.

Thank god they indirectly acknowledged the previous game's HORRIBLE menu system, and are doing something about it. Hype +1.

Its a brilliantly impressive 3d GUI with models of all the cars... that times-out online because it takes 120 seconds to load...

j/k

I want to believe in these guys.

And yeah, Dirt's UI is gorgeous.

Hopefully part of the new GUI is a better vehicle selection screen.
They already fixed that in Motorstorm 1 through a patch. 2D Vehicle selection FTW.

Make sure to cache the game this time. Do not want long load-times.

Other than that and the ability to create custom games and you've got an AAA game.

So it may not be the most important thing in the world, but a nice-looking and functional GUI can really set the tone and be one of those details that lifts a game above the competition (while a bad GUI can be very frustrating).

If anything just make it FAST that is all to pick cars. It is hell on the single player just waiting there for the freaking car to show.

Silly as this may sound I'm really looking forward to that as the ASS SLOW GUI was the number one reason I stopped playing Motorstorm. I heard they implemented a 2D patch though so I should probably try that.

Still, in my opinion Motorstorm is the best arcade style rally racer to ever grace this planet and the GUI is horrible. On the other side there's DIRT with a superb GUI but sadly the game wears its name wayyyy too much.

That should be a requirement for all racing games this gen.

And especially for Motorstorm. Since that was the coolest part of the infamous target footage.

I say they can just borrow the helmet cam from DiRT...

And with an awesome GUI Motorstorm would've been even better, amirite!

I'm just a fan of nice GUIs I guess, maybe because I've studied interface design before. Of course the game is important as well, but it's a part of the package that sticks in my mind at least. :)

Consider me hyped man. I really hope that they really do a clean GUI for Motorstorm II. Do away with the car load times as well and add a shit load of mini carnival events please. This + rock solid online = day one purchase. :D

And headlights. For gawds sake, give us headlights.

Hahaha... omg I know. Their PR spin on the no headlights thing was about as classic as it gets. So shameful. When they talked about why they didn't do the cockpits it was just as lame.

Just admit you didn't have time to finish the fucking game, or don't say anything at all. Or even say, "Next time." That's better than lame justifications.

Yep, the one moment in the trailer that really stood out for me is when one of the bikers jumped off the top of a cliff and the switch into an incar video for another vehicle and the bike lands on top of the hood and rides off it.

The close-up DiRT cockpit I didn't like very much... but the helmet cam I thought was really good.

Something like that comes down to personal preference.

I haven't got to mess around with the new GT cockpits, but they look pretty well done. It's all about camera positioning imo... take a game like PGR4 that has really nice cockpits, but a camera that's too low, and it becomes unplayable for me. But some would disagree obviously.

GT seems like a pretty good blend of PGR4 and the helmet cam in DiRT as far as camera positioning. I would be more than cool with that.

And I have to agree with the above poster about wipers!!!

The most important thing is that they use the harddrive this time. oh and that they take their time.

Hey I'm thinking I'll play some Motorstorm now, never got around to finishing it! And halleluja that they patched the vehicle selection screen.
