I also watched Take Shelter last night. Fucking loved the hell out of it. Michael Shannon's performance was top notch.
That scene at the end where he flips out in front of all those people and gives that speech. So fucking good.
The whole latter half of the film had me on the edge of my seat, just watching the main character quickly lose control. Pacing was perfect. In regards to the ending,
Didn't the shot of Chastain looking down and the raindrops looking like motor oil give away the fact that he was dreaming again? That's what I took away from it. No way that storm could have been real anyways.

Was looking for period dramas, biographies and anything to do with history. Went through these 3 today:

1492 : conquest of paradise

I have always been fascinated with anything involving the "new world". Weird how I had never heard anything about this movie until now. Has it's flaws, but definitively worth a watch.

The Duelists

Loved the cinematography, details, setting, atmosphere, the clothing..oh god the clothing was amazing, I want one of those glorious hats!

The only thing that bothered me, was the accents. It kept slapping me in the face, yelling "DOES NOT FIT". I can't believe they just overlooked such a detail. I hope I am not being too picky, but he wasn't even trying. Definitively a turn off.

Other than that, great movie. A good character study I would say.

Barry Lyndon

Seems like anywhere The Duelists is mentioned, this one pops up. And vice versa.

Incredibly long, but did not find it tedious at all. Solid acting throughout. Amazing locations too. From the tiny dingy farmhouse, to those magnificent chateaus.

Of course, how could I not mention the candles. Those beautiful candles. Absolutely gorgeous lighting and camerawork.

I have said this many times; I love when the director let's the film take it's time. Slow pacing, and allowing the characters to convey thoughts and emotions, without uttering a single word.

Fuck man, I can't even imagine what things Kubrick would have created, if he were here today.

Holiday tomorrow, so I'm gonna watch some more historical movies.

I'm thinking about The Human Condition Trilogy. Open to recommendations.

yea, they've been trying to expand for years. virginia, talks of LA, etc, etc. they've got a developing brand with a legion of nerds backing it, they wanna milk it for all its worth

The one in Winchester, VA perplexes me. It teeters on being in the middle of nowhere and is the only one outside of Texas. I lived about 30 minutes from it before I came to LA.

Films I've seen recently, ranked out of 5 stars.

Source Code: 2.5
Submarine: 2.5
Shutter Island: 4
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: 4
Attack The Block: 4
Crazy Stupid Love: 2.5
Contagion: 3.5

My initial thoughts on the ending were that
his wife had been drawn into his delusions and was developing schizophrenia as well. I assumed that the incident at the town meeting where he lashed out as well as locking her and their child in the storm shelter for several hours, amongst all the other things he had done, had taken a harsh toll on her psyche and put her under a lot of duress that ultimately made her crack.

One thing that I didn't understand about Take Shelter was the role of his friend.

I like the
nature vs. nuture angle
the best. It interests me the most. But given that framework his friend
was a total asshole to him
.
His character doesn't make much sense in that framework or just in the role of the narrative.

The Grey.
Holy crap! Liam Neeson is freaking badass!!

Justice League Doom.
DC Animation keeps hitting it out of the park. These animated features are as good their feature film counterparts.

Hugo.
I fell asleep. Kinda boring.

Underworld Awakening.
Meh. Kate Beckinsale in tight black vampire outfit helped. But it really felt flat.

im finding raging bull hard to watch. It's not grabbing me at all.

Eh, you don't have to like it. Different strokes etc..

Sometimes it helps to give the movie some time. Come back to it later. You might be tired, not in the mood. Many things affect it.

I have had tons of instances where I get bored and shut it off after 20 minutes. I come back to them later, and actually watch them.

Happened to me with The Godfather. after 40 minutes or so, I turned it off. Was so bored.

A few months later, I came back to it. I watched all 3 back to back. 2 days later, did it again.

On the the other hand; you couldsimply don't like it. Dont force it.

Goodfellas was his peak. Although The Departed was pretty damn good.

I like them both but not as much as older Scorsese

Here...I'll rank for funsies:

Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
The Departed
Goodfellas
Shutter Island
Hugo

I don't have much interest in Scorsese overall, though, so I blame that on why I haven't watched more.

If you don't put Kings of Comedy and The Aviator in Scorsese's best then I don't want to talk to yo' ass.

The Departed and Shutter Island especially can fuck right off.

Also Gangs of New York even though it's flawed is 400x more interesting than his recent garbage.

I think my personal Scorsese list would look something like:

1. Taxi Driver
2. Goodfellas
3. The Aviator
4. Raging Bull
5. Hugo
6. The King of Comedy
7. Casino
8. After Hours
9. Cape Fear
10. Kundun
11. Shutter Island
12. The Departed
13. Mean Streets
14. The Last Temptation of Christ
15. Bringing out the Dead
16. Gangs of New York
17. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
18. New York, New York

I've never seen Boxcar Bertha and despite desperate attempts to find a copy of it for rent, have never gotten a hold of and watched The Color of Money.

This obviously doesn't include his doco's, because if it did My Voyage to Italy would be pretty far up the list. Loved it.

The Departed and Shutter Island were pretty impressive from a technical standpoint, even if you didn't like the story (or the ending).

The Departed was an editing marvel and Shutter Island was brilliant for it's cinematography and tone.

Saw 50/50 recently, I was very surprised at how well they struck the right chord. Not too heavy-handed, but not to jokey that it became a farce. Good movie despite the fact that I am completely tired of Seth Rogan.

...yeah. And you have some movies listed twice.

Speaking of Scorsese, I just got through watching Hugo. I really enjoyed every second of it, possibly beats out The Tree of Life for my film of 2011. Scorsese redeemed himself in my eyes after the piece of shit that was Shutter Island.

My top five are

1. Taxi Driver
2. King of Comedy
3. Raging Bull
4. Goodfellas
5. The Departed

not sure how I would rate everything else because most of them I haven't seen in along time.

Mean Streets is on there. You must be looking at the quoted one where I was still replacing ranks.

Ah, I see it now. And for what it's worth The Color of Money was surprisingly good. I am baffled at how Scorsese got some of the shots he did for that movie. Probably one of my top five films of his.

So gaf, I'm in the mood to have nightmares tonight. I have Stalker (Tarkovsky), Diabolique, and Inland Empire. What wins?

Regardless of what gets nerd cred or whatever I gotta go:

1. Goodfellas
2. Taxi Driver
3. The Aviator
4. Gangs of New York
5. King of Comedy

Mean Streets is great though and I do really like The Departed but it exists only narratively for me, no thematic interest, really.

The Color of Money has a big problem though. It's a sequel to one of the best movies ever made and doesn't come close to being as great. I think that is why people shit on it.

I mean, I've only seen maybe a third of his filmography, but I can't see not thinking Taxi Driver is his best. considering it's a masterpiece and all

See, I'd be ok with that angle
that they both had the mental disorder now, if it weren't for the fact of the daughter doing this
:
Spoiler image: http://i.minus.com/iHxxP7PmdICPa.jpg
The daughter starts making round spinning motions with her hands to point out the twisters, and she's too young to be influenced by his schizophrenia
.

I'm of the opinion that it's all fucking real. The wife, when she says "Ok" implies that his premonitions were right all along. He was right in the town centre, and everyone else is in for a rude awakening
.

Mine is similar, just in a different order:

1. Taxi Driver
2. The Departed
3. Goodfellas
4. Raging Bull
5. The Aviator

Haven't seen King of Comedy in a long time though. I'm kinda waiting for a blu release before re-watching though.

Frankly, if a person's top 5 scorsese list doesn't contain at least three of those five then they aren't to be taken seriously, so the similarities are to be expected :p
