MS: Japan their fastest growing gaming market, strong popularity for the Xbox Series S

Talking to IGN Japan, Xbox’s head of the Asia region, Jeremy Hinton, said “Japan is our fastest growing market worldwide.”

“We've seen phenomenal growth within this last twelve months in Japan,” he continued. “And that's new people coming into our ecosystem, that's people signing up for Game Pass, that's people buying accessories or games on PC. So we're seeing really phenomenal growth coming out of Japan to be top of that list for us.”

“I think that we are seeing stronger demand for the Series S in Japan,” said Hinton. He noted that the price made it attractive, but also offered anecdotal evidence of it being popular due to its size. “I've certainly seen a lot of people sharing their new console purchases on Twitter talking about how cute and small and appealing that is for a lot of people. So we're definitely seeing stronger demand for that.”

“We've got more Japanese-developed content in our ecosystem now than we've had at any point within our history,” he said. He also noted the Xbox’s growing popularity in Japan’s indie scene. “I think we have more development kits with independent developers in Japan than we've ever had in our history before, and there's a lot of talent and a growing independent scene in Japan,” he said.

They need more Japanese content for the rest of the world. They need to invest in studios there.

They should probably throw bags of money at Itagaki, and Igarashi. Even get Haijme Tabata in house to build an exclusive slice of life JRPG that will ultimately be more impressive by not being called Final Fantasy.

Or just buy Sega, or Bandai, or CHAOS or whatever. Go big or go home, Phil.

They've sold 12,000 Series S in Japan. Total.
That is great, considering japan don't like outside gaming aside of their stuff. I even doubt pc gaming has a foot there. Japanese people are conditioned to Nintendo, Sega and Playstation consoles. No outside console will crack them. R8 village was a failure there. Maybe they are only interested in their own games, or I am just biased.

Most of the comments I see about Xbox on Japanese gaming sites are a handful of people who like it, a whole bunch of people who hate it, and a couple people who compare it to things like public ashtrays.

EDIT: Oh and people demanding that MS lets them install Windows on it to use as a PC.

Sale data could be wrong, you think a company worth trillions of dollars would be stupid enough to lie? Only small companies would do that.
I wonder what is Microsoft goal is? They could have gone Playstation route, and made gamepass and their games exclusive to their system. Yet, they shared it with pc, mobile and cloud. To the point, some people have no desire to buy the console.

If they were going for Playstation route, how many console would have they sold by now?

He specifically called out PC and Gamepass as well. So consoles aren't the only place, MS makes money.
I can see that one. Gamepass subs from Japan makes a sense. You really don't need to sell a console to them, when they can use your services without a console. Its a win win situation. Buy a console, or play it on your phone/pc/cloud. Considering they are trying to support xcloud for Japan this year. That might increase their hardware, or attract new Japanese customers.

All they need is rpg like people said. Rpg is what can attract Japanese and Playstation people.

They didn't say they were doing well or remotely competitive. They said it's their fastest growing market. Which is easily just them saying compared to their performance previously and in other markets, their percentage growth is greater in Japan. Sales data shows 12,000 sold. It's not going to be so far off that it's suddenly 100,000. Xbox is still doing very poorly in Japan, as expected.

I can see game pass potentially taking off in japan (mobile/pc)

I guess it depends how it is advertised over there though.

Edit: I find a lot of people are completely unaware they can play their game pass games on their phone.

They keep saying this and yet we see most Japanese games skip over Xbox, so why Great Ace Attorney is not coming out on Xbox? its getting released on other platforms, including PC.
There’s 12,000 Chad-San Thundercock-San’s in glorious Nipponland who have seen the glorious light and embraced FPS games, WRPGs and Racers whilst forsaking little girl pantie simulator 2021 and that one you mentioned.

Same thing atlus isn't releasing persona on pc. Some devs don't like certain hardwares. Its easy to focus on where you make more money. Gaming isn't as the old date. People from your country isn't going to enjoy it that much. Overseas is where potential customers are. Same as how persona and final fantasy is popular in the west. Even though they are from Japanese companies.

The issue here is original Ace Attorney Trilogy did released on Xbox but it seems Great Ace Attorney just skipping Xbox all together.

The Series S claim is very weird because Series X is selling like 3:1 to Series S in Japan.

So in terms of Xbox popularity Series X is way ahead… Series S is weakest selling console in terms of popularity in Japan by a big margin.

Need to see more output or acquisition of Japanese developers to fill that gap. At the very least, Tango Gameworks should continue to work on Japanese oriented titles until you do so. While there were certainly games from your announcements that I want, the lack of variety was a problem.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Series S picked up next month just because PSOv2 NGS is an xbox console exclusive, but fastest growing when dealing with such low numbers is, well, bullshit.
