MS: PS3 will help us sell 360s

the fact of the matter is, most people -- casual gamers -- aren't going to plop money down for an overpriced next-gen system that has a library of xbox->360 ports, and supposed exclusives that don't look much better than what's on their xbox.

no, they're going to search high and low for the ps3. for those who come up short on saturday, after walking into best buy looking for a ps3, will go elsewhere on sunday or wait until the following weekend to pick one up.

casual gamers aren't going to sell themselves short just because the ps3 may be in short supply.

if they wanted a 360, they would already have had one by that time.

They think they're funny? We'll im not laughing... The difference between the PS2 and the Xbox360 is 250$. People are not doing impulse shopping for next-generation consoles, not the mainstream. That's way to expansive. If i would get an Xbox360 and i was told that i'd had to wait for a couple of months... I'd also buy a PS2 (already got one, but whatever). For PS3 / Xbox360 it's different... Consider the impulse money you spend... 400$, that's like... alot of Snickers :D

Considering PS3 sales will absolutley dwarf x360 sales in that period it will be impossible to see this theory in effect.

until mid-2007, i really don't think we're going to be out of this glut of xbox-360 ports that we're seeing.

the reason the ps3 might be more desirable around xmas of this year, is because sony seems to be instituting some qa on what hits the system -- which is only going to increase its appeal in the eyes of the informed casual.
 
People that are shopping for the new Playstation aren't really going to be swayed by Halo, at least not enough to make much of a difference.

yeah and Halo will be destroyed by MGS2, and Splinter Cell doesn't matter against Mario ... GAFFers never learn i swear.

The majority wont camp out with SolidSnakeX and his friends, they dont really care about the console war.
- X360 is available NOW
- X360 has some great games NOW
- X360 cost 100$-200$ less than PS3
- Sony doesn't have a lot of exclusives left.
One factor is not enough to influence sales, but 1+1=3 in this case.

No, not really.. Dreamcast wasnt banking on that at all.

And for those who are truelly determined to by a PS3, they'll want one regardless.. not being able to find an xbox 360 didnt make me want it more.. i still want it the same, i just cant find it.. But for the casuals, the more marketing about how you need "next-gen" is good for all next-gen systems.. theyll go into the store and get comparisons, and no doubt if ps3 is sold out, the store will try to push more 360s, and to a casual, it might not make a difference if they both have madden, etc..

this wont effect those specifically going to the store for a ps3.. but its a definite marketing fact; ie: see GM's "Employee Discount" sale which drove huge amounts of showroom traffic.. it actually boosted other car companies sales that werent doing the sale, too, along with GMs.. as it got more people out to look at cars and comparison shop, etc.
 
Also, at that price point, people are discerning about what they buy, even though the competition has a good product. What could change this is exclusives, or the lack of thereof.

Also, don't discount PS3 BC: even joe sixpack knows that his library of ps2 games is not going to work with a 360.
 
all ms needs to do is have systems readily availible around that time, at least 1 new major title availible at that time and advertise the hell out of that said game and the system around that time and this would indeed work.
 
here are some exclusive info:
- X360 will have a price drop this year
- PS3 will cost at least 399$
- there will be less exclusive games on PS3 compared to PS2.

Of course, the same games come out on both systems so there's no reason not to get a 360 instead!

Amir0x should come out with version 2 of those spinning records.

I have more than 3 neurons and every analysts agree with me. Production cost are sky-rocketing, that's the main reason but there are other factors.

Having less exclusives doesn't really matter if they have the right exclusives.

I won't get into the whole unimpressed with 360 train of thought cause everyone is entitled to their opinions but I will address the two comments about 'If so and so wanted a 360 they would have had one by that time'. Am I hearing that by the time PS3 launches there won't be anyone else who would want a 360? All 360s that would ever sell will be sold right before the PS3 and if you can't get a PS3 you'll take nothing ?

It may be hard to believe but some people won't make the final decision as to which console they will pick up until they hit the stores. Many people are impatient and for every consumer out there that will search high and low for a PS3 until they get one or they just won't game any more, there are 10 who will pick up the console from the company who thought enough of them to have enough product on the store shelves. This was a lesson that M$ learned and Son¥ will learn too if they won't ensure that there are plenty of PS3s to be purchased. Not everyone out there is a rabid fanboy who will settle for nothing less than PS3. In fact at this point aside from some nice tech demos I haven't seen any playable PS3 software to make it a better purchase over the 360.

Will I be out there day one getting a PS3? Sure. But I already have 360 and at the least the PS3 will make a nice BR player and hopefully will upconvert old PS2 games I skipped because they looked so horrible on my HDTV. But I am not the standard case for a consumer and neither are many of the GAFers. In the end its WAAAAAY too early to give the PS3 the next-gen crown. I'd at least like to see they produce something playable first. :)

Ah well. We'll see. I'm not a fanboy or someting, just dissapointed by the Xbox360 so far. Saved up for one with a couple of games, didn't get the guts to buy one. Waste of money. Spend it on an American PS2! That's the shit.

Your original comment was "Sony doesn't have alot of exclusives left" which is pretty different from "Sony will have less exclusives than the PS2" where they did have alot of exclusives. So I don't see how i'm changing the topic.

What era are you living in? Most "casuals" and "soccer moms" are VERY Internet savvy and either shop online or do their homework online before they go out and spend big coin on any kind of major purchases, unless they're loaded, which is a whole 'nother ball of wax. You're not giving people much credit and need to quit putting them in your ignorant little boxes.

But he's right. Number of exclusives is not as important as having the right exclusives.
Did the number of exclusives help the GameCube? No.

What about right now? Does the number of exclusives the 360 has over the PS3 help? Somewhat, but not too much. Are there a bazillion people that did not have an Xbox searching desperately for one? It sounds like it's falling back on its previous fanbase. Why? It does not have the right exclusive to get new buyers.

Number of exclusives doesn't mean anything if none of them are interesting to new customers.

Wow. Did I touch a nerve? :lol I wasn't talking about YOU so relax. You are obviously one of those rabid gamers who obviously will do his homework and won't settle for anything other than what you are looking for when it comes to a game system. That's FINE! But whether you admit it or not the vast majority of game buyers out there aren't going to see any major differences between the 360 and the PS3 and will pick up whatever is available. If it happens to be the PS3 or 360 so-be-it. It's all good. :)

So they want us to believe the following things:

-People love 360 so much that they will wait months to get their hands on them.
-People just got a PS2 instead of a 360.

A lot of people(fanboys) seem to think the premium pack is going to go for $300 later this year. I think Allard may have said something about regular price drops.

When i hear things like that it really just makes me want to wait and wait to buy one. I don't think you should ever mention price drops until you're about to do it. Did he make that statement before the console launched? If so he should be shot, then fired.
