Multiplayer First Person Shooters are in a horrible state right now.

People who say they want arena shooters don't buy arena shooters. Quake Champions was fantastic, was free to play, got updated with maps, & most of the so-called genre fans didn't show up when it counted. I'm still salty.

The conversation with these people usually goes like this...

"We need a new arena shooter"

"But they just released an arena shooter that no one bought. The market has moved on from that genre."

"Well no one bought that arena shooter because it didn't do this particular thing right."

"Like how all the BRs do everything right despite it being a brand new genre?"

"Ah well, nevertheless..."

I loved Quake Champions, but it's development was so messy. Hell, the marketing alone was an issue. For an incredibly long time, people had no idea it even existed and was available. The roadmap also felt like it was half baked. Early on it felt like they had a plan in place, but there was a point where that consistency just.... stopped. Of course it didn't help that Saber's support on the project went only so long. That was around the time the content became a slow drip.

The game is STILL "in Early Access", lol.

It's awesome that id is still producing content for it, but man, Quake deserves a LOT more.

Regardless of the style of shooter you play it is my opinion that Multiplayer FPS games are in the gutter. Whether it is rampant cheating, lack of innovation, souless execution, or bug ridden launches, every single game in the genre is plagued with something. Probably the best launch this year, Halo Infinite, is still just a well made upgrade on the formula Halo 2 popularized, which is great for the people who want to play the same game they have been playing for years, but not ideal for those of us looking for something new...
So, either you never played Halo 2, or you haven't played Halo Infinite. I'm not sure which one is worse. As of right now, Halo Infinite is hands down the best multiplayer shooter you can put time in - sans the atrocious Battle Pass, of course. CoD and BF may have shit the bed, but if you think Halo Infinite is "in the gutter", you're just advertising how unqualified you are to make this thread.

Been playing the only FPS that matters since 2017, Escape From Tarkov. Everything else has felt incredibly lacking.

The biggest issue facing modern FPS games is rampant cheating through devices or software on any device; PC or console. It's a joke and at any decent level of ranked play there's a cheater in nearly every single game. It's pretty disturbing none of the outlets/media do long term exposure based articles to really apply pressure to the industry heavy weights. Would you stand for cheating with professional sports? Would you stand for it at your local sports club? Would you stand for it with kid sports?

It's the blackmark against the industry and nowhere near enough is done about it.

No way. They’re in a great spot. Even shitty COD still has Modern Warfare 2017.

Siege and Halo. I’m in heaven.

I really enjoyed the original Titanfall when that launched on the Xbox One. Before that the most fun I had and dedicated the most time to was COD Modern Warfare. Titanfall was a massive breath of fresh air and, although some have tried, no one has come close to the brilliance of the original Titanfall. The feeling or power you get from seeing the Titan land to jumping in and obliterating pilots was unreal. Why no one took this further is beyond me.
I 100% agree with the OP.

Aim assist, bullet magnetism and other assists are the main reasons why the competitive FPS genre is quickly going to shit for me. We're pretty much playing console games that cater to controller players. What's worse is Vanguard and Battlefield decided to add bullet deviation (bloom) to their games, so good accuracy on mouse is rewarded even less thanks to RNG.

It seems like devs are doing pretty much everything they can to squash skill gaps so that anybody can feel like a winner. Take Warzone for example, there's so much bullshit in that game that I bet you could train a monkey to win a match. I say that as somebody who has played it for over 1,000 hours. That's not the case with older games.

I'm finding myself going back to games where I can actually give props to people for hitting a nice shot instead of losing to all sorts of bullshit.

Seeing the amount of console shooters being praised, especially Halo (and Destiny) with its gunplay with TWO aim assists fooling the player, always makes me sad.

People buy the same old drivel so devs make the same old drivel.

Wasn't split gate kind of original? Does anyone even talk about that anymore? No? Well there you go.

I’m with you OP, FPS games are the same song-and-dance with the floating hands/guns.

FPS as a genre is stuck on a flat screen with little to no innovation and won’t evolve until VR becomes mainstream.

I certainly can’t wait for Battlefield VR and COD VR.

Until then, it will be the same floating guns/hands…

I hate BR type games, so any step further away from this genre is much appreciated. I'm still in love with FPS games nowadays. We have the straight up shooters like COD, RPG-ish type shooters like Destiny 2, Borderlands, some arena shooters that have resurfaced again like Splitgate and we have the large the large battle shooters like Battlefield and Hell Let Loose. There's also Enlisted that tries to incorporate some RPG type progression into the large battlefield type genre. I feel like any type of innovation would be how developers refine mechanics inside those genre's.

That sounds even more boring and with smaller player bases than they have already.

Even if it did take off, they will feel the same again, just with heavier more expensive equipment.

I think Vanguard is the best COD in many years.. I do agree about Battlefield and I liked Halo the first day..but as I've said in other threads it feels soulless sometimes.

Battlefield 2042 is the most fun I have had with a Battlefield since 1, Halo Infinite is looking to be the best Halo MP experience in years and COD Vanguard despite it's boring setting is apparently a fun time this year.

So I disagree for now.

The time to kill is too damn low. If people just want to spray and pray with low skill weapons and watch people drop fast, then there isn't much room for gameplay innovation that encourages people to learn new things. Unless you want to concentrate on "non-combat" innovations like scavenger hunts and ten dimensional inventory tetris.

I kind of agree with the innovation angle since Siege, a 7 year old game, is still the one with the most advanced gamplay systems in 2021 (granular destruction, sound that follows the shortest path and the ability to shoot during most animations)

On the other side, multiplayer games have extremely long lives now, which might be part of the problem since you can't change much the games without upseting the player base which becomes huge when games are getting supported for at least 10 years when really successfull.

Edit:

Have you ever played Rainbow Six Siege? extremely low ttk but is full of gameplay systems that you don't see in games that seem similar on the surface.

As an example, maps feel huge compared to most other games not because of sheer size but complexity since you have to not only understand the layout to have good awareness of what is going on, but also what is destructable, what not, and how has it been modified by the teams in the round.

This is still all tactical innovation rather than action gameplay innovation. Just leaning more heavily into the "who shoots first" dilemma.

tactical or reliastic shooter should be low ttk, if i shoot you in real life chest and up your going down like a sack of shit, its need to be like that in realistic shooters.

The most popular FPS, Warzone, [...] is developed by an actual evil corporation that wants to suck your soul from your body and then sell it back to you as microtransations to pay for their sexual harassment lawsuits.

lol, that's a good line.

I was today years old when I realized that there is another online Quake after Quake Live. And I actually really like online quake. What the fuck?
Exhibit A, haha.

It's a such a shame. Basically Quake Champions is, you guessed it, a hero shooter. Which turned everyone off when it was first announced. But when playing it, it plays better than anyone thought it would. I still think special character abilities feel odd in a Quake title, but it works. It's F2P on Steam, I'd recommend giving it a shot. I'm sure queue times may be a mixed bag though. :\

COD remains the best one for me still from a pvp perspective and once they roll out some zombie updates I'll cement that in.

I'm still eagerly awaiting the next Destiny expansion though I've lost interest some once they introduced armor 2.0

Halo was fun for a weekend but it plays so drastically different from modern shooters that it makes the aiming......not enjoyable at all. It's like living in the past with the way aiming works and I'm just not a fan. Still enjoy big team battle though.

Battlefield? Idk did they make it too big? I'll give it a few more shots but I'll wait until they fix things.

I absolutely hate battle royales / one life game modes so I can't review Apex / Warzone or Tarkov

Recently got back into shooters after a 2 year long hiatus. Played MW2 on my PS3 for shits and giggles then went back to MW 2019 arena MP and now enjoying Warzone BR. I don't think the genre lacks innovation, it's probably more that familiarity breeds contempt. I must have played 500 hours of MW2 back in the day and it feels just as good now as it did then. I want to go back to Apex soon and then try Halo Infinite. There's plenty of decent stuff out there....although I'm puzzled why Crytek can't patch Hunt : Showdown on PS5 / XSX for 60fps. That is without doubt the premier BR available and would have me back instantly.

Wat? Adding Battle Royale to Halo? But why? Theres plenty of that shite elsewhere.
Not picking on you but where can I play a Halo BR? Halo has combat that is "Halo" and I would like to play a BR with that combat/vehicles/etc.

Just because other BRs exist it doesn't mean they do the same thing a Halo BR would.

So is Overwatch filled with cheaters? Out of all the mid gen 7 multiple fps games Overwatch was unique enough for me though I only played 2 seasons of it then if course every fps after that started running specialists.

Splitgate is a solid mp shooter I don't get why anyone would play CoD over it.

I would love to see a new arena shooter however if they are not properly supported they always will be destined to fail. Seeing a cross platform with keyboard and mouse support on a community driven arena shooter would be a god send.

Other then that honestly why not just stick it out with indie fps games that are wave based or rouge like or try representing the older style of fps games in unique ways. Killing Floor 2 is still my jam on PS4 to this day.

Here is a list of random indie plus like more acclaimed fps games you can get on PS4/Xbox

Exodemon
Project Warlock
Bullets Per Minute
Immortal Redneck
Strafe
Ziggurat
Into the Pit
City of Brass
Mother Gunship
Tower of Guns
Dusk
Ion Fury
Quake
Doom 64
Hard Reset
Shadow Warrior 1 + 2
Serious Sam Collection
